NEW BUMPS! I finally weny out and got some decent, brand new subs, and am extremely satisfied with the results. The new subs are a pair of JBL GT5-12's in a prefab slot ported box, and they knock waaaay harder than anything I have ever had. The best part, they are already doing this, and the subs aren't even broken in yet, sitting on 1/8 gain, and with half the usual sub volume from the deck. I can't wait to see what they will do in a a few more days. The best part: Ridicoulsy low price since my buddy runs the CarToys he sold them to me from. I copped these puppies for $105, thats two subs, and the enclosure. I was iffy about buying them at first, (especially in a prefab ported box!) but when somebody that has been your best freind since middle school says "Dude you need these subs, they make the letters on H/U's jump up and down" I had to check them out. Although they don't make the letters on the Alpine move much, they do move. Break in already! Have no idea what a DB reading would say, but I am estimating that I am in the 135-low 140s, based on other systems I metered. So far, these are definitely, by far the best lower budget subs I have ever heard. At 275RMS each, they blow anything in that range I have heard before out of the picture. ( thinking of mainly the Alpine Type-E, Infinity Reference, Polk's older models, Rockford Punch 1, 2, and 3, and just about any cheap sub out there) Unfortunaly, the JBL GTO 75.4II I have pushing them still gets the "hiccups," often going into protect when the bass gets too low. After having two of these, with several sub packages connected, and hearing a reader complain of the same thing, I am sure that these amps are not only not designed to push subs, also just plain fail to do it. What a damn shame. Time for a new class D sub amp, and to use this for comp's and midbass only. Anyway the verdict: The JBL GT-5 subs Thumbs way up! The JBL GTO75.4II 4 channel, Fakin the Funk! This new version has an eff rating of 93 dB SPL@ 2.83 volts. Most low-mid budget/power subs are often below 88 and it takes more amping power to reach X-max. Enjoy your new toys! CLAP Swez SQLThump on 04/29/2008 19:40:53 Some pretty high efficency yes, but the Alpine Type-E is rated 91Db@1watt, so it's not the only one with good efficency. I'm thinking it's more to do with the enclosure and just overall great design of the whole sub. Not too sure what is going on under magnets and dustcaps, but from the outside they scream out "QUALITY!!." The main thing that caught my eye was how deep the cone is, especially compared to other low-mid power/budget subs. Most have something that attaches to a coil and a surround, this thing is like 12" mixing bowl with a magnet. The one week break in is up at 9:00 tonight, and I am a worried about my car's abililty to hold itself together and what will happen to my ears if I turn them up somewhere closer to full power form the amp. It's doing the job fine where it's at! Ash on 04/30/2008 18:01:46 JBL GT series subs have always been of good quality. Don't understand why people over look them so much. Anyways, glad you got a good deal on some solid gear there! Almost had me scared for a minute the way your title was screaming and all. Didn't know if something had happened to you like maybe Tom Cruise getting a hold of you: http://www.liquidgeneration.com/Media/Videos/Viral_Videos/Celebrity/Tom_Cruise_Kills_Oprah SQLThump on 05/1/2008 22:33:54 No Tom Cruise action, but what is called a "Lil Jon" Moment, a breif burst of excitement that results in temporary crunkness. Been having a lot of them lately........ I overlooked JBL subs in general because none of them really turned my head. I have heard a many in soundrooms, and a few in cars, but none of them were too impressive, probably due to poor installations and enclosure pairings. These had such a good reputation thatI didn't even listen to them first. If only Tom Cruise would do the Oprah job.......... Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
