likely lower this year...which is a sink of the car audio market....and the Manufacturers (MFers) didn't want to believe me in 2002 that it would be a drastic drop off.

i work at the BX on base now, in the garden center and when i lived in Germany the BX was full of High School and College kids making minimum wage around school hours. i was very surprised to find that i am only one of 4-5 college level teens working there. being California Bay Area it seems like a majority of employees are Older Filipino people.

i agree with the post GRIN

Sadly, it's deeper than it looks. Many "older workers" are also farming these job markets and taking jobs that are well below their skills, pay scale rates and experience levels. D'oh!

Do we like it? Nope! But when employers look at the glut of potential employees, market conditions and willingness to "do whatever it takes" to fill their rosters", they choose experienced peeps that show up everyday, give it their best and take the challenges w/o gripes. (Good reasons huh?)

After working for a small distributor that has tried "young bucks" for a few years, they prefer the older folks as they show up for work, put in the effort and manage the shortfalls.

Yes, younger peeps have more energy and stamina, but the older worker that shows up, meets or exceeds expectations and keeps things flowing, are preferred over the younger applicants.

Older peeps have a different mindset. They will do whatever it takes to provide for their families. Since most youngers do not have that drive/pressure, they are often left wanting.

Is it fair? It depends... but life never promised fairness. If it did, we'd all be in a different scenario. In the interim, consider offering prospective employers a few free days of work on your own dime. If they like what they see, there's a better than average chance you'll get that gig.

"Tough times create opportunity for some and closed doors for others". After being on both sides of this equation, experience and flex will often close the deal. (Determination and need make all the difference)

Keep looking and may God show favor to you, (Ask and we will get an answer) SMILE It may not be the answer we desire, but it's still an answer and stepping stone to better opportuinities later.

PS Things have changed over the past 10-15 years. Those who adapts and flex will prevail. Those who do not... not pretty.

You can blame it on the parents for not raising this generation of kids properly. All I see with a few exceptions are kids, teens, and young adults that don't want to merit anything. They expect mom & pop too fork out all that they need & want. They won't do chores, sleep in late, stay up all night, and have no sense of responsibility.

I see this in the homes, on the streets, and even on the jobs. There are several on my job that really don't get how lucky they are to be making the kind of money they do. All they concentrate on is payday & partying and in the meantime don't even know they are on their way to getting fired. Very sad!!

This isn't all of them for there is still some good kids out there, but the majority of the ones that I have ran across fit into the category.

What they don't see is that the prison systems is hiring big time and more are being built. Why? To house young adults like them that don't want to adhere to society's rules, and want to take the easy route out of everything.

Hum, that is so true Ash. Kids are going to be so ill-prepared when they leave the nest and much of it seems to be directly related to lousy parenting efforts at home.

As some may know, I work in schools all week long as a vendor/supplier. There are huge differences in the behaviors and attitudes I note in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools and then High Schools and Academy's.

At the Elementary level, most kids are sweet, untainted, friendly and very respectful of all adults they come in contact with. They hold the door for adults, say hello, wave and are basically cooperative little tikes in most cases.

At the Middle levels, it's a mixed bag. Some kids are maturing, well-mannered and polite too. The other side of the spectrum, some are barely in control of their emotions, actions and spend a lot of time in the counseling or Principle's office for a wide variety of misconduct. Some are like boom-a-rangs. They get tossed out of school for a few days, come back later and repeat the process all over again.

At HS levels, the better schools in the districts have a tight reign on these young adults. They study hard, learn well and have good manners and respect themselves, each other and adults in general.

In many of the rougher HS's I service, it's a total nut house. These poor kids are often off the hook with emotional issues, swearing, fights and probably gang issues too. Some guys try to act macho and the girls look and act pretty loose. Some look like they are dressed and ready to go to work at a strip club after school lets out. It's unbelieveable!

Police and guards patrol the halls all day and the looks on their faces tell a lot. After chatting w/ a few, you get a real eye-opener picture of what goes on each day in these schools. (More like Educational Detention Centers)

Sadly, the only things they will be equipped for when they graduate, are street crimes, loitering, hoe's and thugs. This is very distressing to observe and at times, I wish I had the time to pull them into a room, get some dialoge going and explain the trajectory of life they are headed for if they stay on the same path. It's enough to make a grown man weep for them.

Frankly, when they get a job, some will snap out of this zombie-like state and get the message. Others will be a burden on society and eventually get locked up. These kids are hungry for attention, direction and boundaries. But there is no one at home to give it to them, so they act out in very anti-social ways. If things seem bad now, just wait a few more years. What a mess we have allowed to spawn in this country.
