hey ash,
i have been told that the cap increase the bass quality and helps the amps to run at its best also keeps the battery from running out.
Was i told wrong?

Read these and you'll get a better picture of how surge caps work and why they don't really cut musterd in large amp installs:

http://www.bcae1.com/capacitr.htm

In a nutshell, Capacitors are great for filtering out the AC ripple, (noise) in a given power supply. But when we compare power storage capacity of of a large capacitor to a car battery, the results are obviously in favor of the storage battery.

Lets not forget the source of all this power though...

"""The Alternator"""

Until you don't have a source that supplies at a higher rate, how would you manage the depletion rate and compensate the high storage capacity.....??

PS: those links Swez gave you are very useful ones to keep for bookmark reference...

On a small scale system (150 watt bass engine) you may see some advantages with a cap. I used to use one in that range a long time ago and it did stop the lights from dimming on bass hits. Yet with the power output now commonly used they are practically useless. There just isn't enough capacity for constant power which is where it all matters.

There is a very slight advantage like Swez stated before as they are good for that, but like also said, a high output alternator and gel cell battery are much better. It won't hurt if you decide to still use it, but don't totally rely on it either.

Ash,
