I've always wondered why poeple stuff matting or pillow stuffing inside their box. I've had some not so serious answers, and I'd just like to know what you guy's think.

I'd also like to know what this would do, far as what bennifits someone could gain by doing this.

Take a look inside any Commercial or Professional grade enclosure made and you will probably find it has acoustical sound dampening materials inside.

Why would they do this step if there were no benefits and just add cost to the product build? THINK

I have noticed that, and I always wonder why they do that. There has to be benefits if they're buying the materials, they would'nt just put it there for ****'s 'n' giggles right!! What I want to know is what does this produce?

Basically it is to help improve the acoustics of the sub by damping unwanted resonances reflected back into the cone. Also it can be used to effectively increase the size of the actual air the sub sees inside the box, but only to a certain degree. It won't help much, if at all, if the box is too small and it's gain may or may not be noticeable.

In most cases it is always better to err on the lower side of box Q or ported alignment because it is easy to subtract by adding solid mass inside of the box. If you go too small, more than likely the only thing you can do is rebuild to a bigger size. Stuffing a box just won't help enough to compensate. Still it is a good idea to keep it's use in practice as it does have pros when properly applied.

There are also different types of stuffing that can be used that will produce better results:

Fiberglass insulation. wool, polyfil, fiberfill, open cell foam, eggcrate open cell foam.

One of the best results I have ever gotten was a fiberglass insulation layer along the interior walls, then a medium density fill in the cavity with poly-fil. A bit extreme, but the most damping nonetheless. Made for a very solid sounding subwoofer.

see I just thought the box factory was next to a pillow factory....

They usually are and just swap pillow stuffing for boards as needed... silly-head. LOL
