i've cooled down a bit since reading that, and was just wondering peoples take on it i guess. i have several issues with the site, but not on the material.

"Boom cars have been closely linked to murder, aggression, gangs, drugs, speeding, reckless driving, DUI, underage drinking, and other crimes."
-Patrice Thomas

she is very educated, has formed a strong argument, and researched and cited all her work which i commend. The demographic she is targeting IS very young, and typically wont have the time/effort that she does to compile a reasonable argument. it seems like she is simply overwhelming young adults into disbelief and lack of any substantial rebuttal.

lastly, what caught my attention that turned my disbelief into rage was the page first linked, where I interpreted it as something along these lines,

"Any of you kids stupid enough to argue against me obviously have not read everything and don't understand what i have read and cited"

therefore crushing any attempt or possibility for her to ever be wrong.
i need to sleep on this

"By the way -- you and those few bad apples are just the unwitting puppets dancing on the whims of a multicorporate ploy to make money regardless of the damage done. (Thank you, MERA/SEMA, for making America a worse place for all of us to live.) Those who boom at (gee do you think they are MERA/SEMA-sponsored?) dB drag races are pouring millions of dollars into the coffers of those who promote street booming by idiots and thugs. You are part of your own problem and don't have the brains to see it."

WOW CLAP
i cant stop reading.

It's a very wordy and verbose piece, but she makes some very good points about disturbing the peace and rights of others who do not enjoy or appreciate "Boom Cars".

Frankly, I outgrew that stage in my 20's as a Rock Band bassist. It was a fun gig for about 10 years, but reality set in eventually and steady work and a livable paycheck became the focus. I eventually sold all the gear for more than it cost and went to work as a tradesman apprentice.

Back in the late 90's, the car audio bug bit and even then, moderation was always the goal. It was a private hobby and I saw no need to impress or inflict my preferences on others who do not have the same itch. It was a personal thing to enjoy then and now. If I had the itch to dial up the dB's, took a drive out to some remote area and hit a few buttoms, dialed a few knobs and Viola, enjoy for a time and then head back when the "Jones" was satisfied.

Today, it's more fun to help others as they build their systems and spend money as they see fit. It's gratifying enough to install a pile of neat stuff, dial in all the key parameters and watch the owner smile as we wrap things up and do a few quick sound checks. Once that is done and all is well, cash is exchanged and they go on their way, happy as clams.

This feed my new addiction... fly fishing and the acquisition of a few pretty nice pieces of gear over the past 3 years. Now, the joy of being outdoors, searching for the wylie trout, bass or other fish has become the new hobby. In the winter months, we hunker down, hand tie our own flies and perhaps try my hand at a custom made fly rod next year.

This is not a cheap sport anymore however. A quality blank can cost $200.00 plus hardware, a well-balanced reel, line set and all the labor that goes into them. By the time it's all said and done, $500.00 is not an unusual price to pay for a 1st rate rig. Am thinking a nice #9-10 Steelhead rod kit might be in order for next year?

Anyway, so much for personal ramblings. Just respect the power we have at our disposal and use it wisely. (Especially around populated areas) If one gets the urge to dial up the dB's, go out to the boonies where it won't bother others. (Don't come near our fishing spots either) You might get a large rock in the windshield as a reminder!

There are consequences for all bad behavior and poor judgement. Just ask my old neighbor how I handled his antics when he pulled up in the drive way, booming his bass and woke me from a deep sleep on more than one occassion. Yes, I made him a promise as the last straw... (No threats) "I'll smash your gear if you do that one more time punk"!!! He got the message and within 2 months, they moved out. (Thank God)

Quote: "The DC sniper had the right to own and use a gun. His rights ended where the lives of others were affected. He abused his rights. It is scary how many of you do not clearly understand what freedom (or freedom of speech) is, what it's worth, and how it relates to responsibility, and how many of you fail to identify what is a right and what is a privilege."

I could say the same for democrats...

The funny thing is that one day a "boom car boy" is going to be the one installing a remote start for this uppity b!+(h. So ironically, her laziness and desire for comfort and nice things will be funding the boom!

MrBrownstone on 03/19/2008 18:57:56
Boom cars are no more responsible for crime than:

Spoons make people fat

Has she done any hands on research by fraternizing with car audio buffs? Course not! just a bigotous speech from the pedistal.

If you go to a db Drag show, you'll see 99% of the people participating in serious competition aren't committing murder, rampant with drugs, or harassing old people.

On the street, boom cars are natures equivalent to birds that make noise to impress the female. These boom guys are just simply less secure and therefore need to broadcast for longer distances. That, and maybe they just like the feeling of 30Hz at 130dB?

130db?
gross.
140db?

i want to be in the low to mid 40s with my next 10s setup.

that is an old site, I think it has been linked on here once or twice now. I am in the middle as I have built a system around SQ but also made it loud as hell so that if I want to, I can. I do not do it at lights, in neighborhoods or when it will bother anyone other then me.

newB on 03/20/2008 02:11:47
thats just it, she argues that your "SQ" tones are KILLING people that cant even hear them

Great picture Drew... mike the Head and not the speakers...hehe. Gotta love the sound of that old Head and the Celestion 4 x 12 stacks it came with.

Phat guitars don't use spoons either,

I am pretty offended by both articles, but disgusted by the second article. Not that the fact were bad, they are quite good, but the pigheaded, ignorant, one sided and to a point just plain rude comments in the article.

For one, when I play the system, I may get a rush of endorphins, but desires to commit murder, theft, assualt, join a gang ,speed or roll through the set with a forty in my lap actually decreases, as the sound soothes my ailing mind with music that chills me out, and helps me get the day to day crap I deal with in life out of my mind. Maybe I might want to go use the "gateway" drug, but thats about it. That leads to spoons, and laziness in my case, not violent behavior.

As for leaving all the gangsta's and thugs in the second paragraph, I think I still have those stripes in a few places here in Colorado, and I read the whole article. What about a mob boss? Don't see many of them booming the streets, I could see them reading the whole article, and they are waaaaaay more involved in crime drugs and murder than any of my "hoodlum street boomer" freinds ever were.

As for the line "We have tried talking to you face to face. What we get is defensiveness, the middle finger, higher volumes, threats, burn outs, sneers, and vulgarities.", thats a load of horse manure piled up NY high if I have ever seen one. While many are like this, I tell my neighbors "If it's ever a problem, let me know, I'll turn it down." So far the next door neighbor has asked ONCE, and that's the end of it. Now I chill out if I see their vehicles next door, but if nobody is around, I'll play as long as I can. But if they pull in their driveway, playtime is over.

Now I won't say I don't get defensive at times, but only when I feel threatened, or if it I can't enjoy a movie in my own home at any volume. I have had the former happen twice, and the latter once. A few neighbors could of just asked politely if I would turn it down and I will, but tell me to "turn it down or you will kick my ass" the first time I ever im my life see you will result in defensiveness, vulgarities, the middle finger, threats, and in the second time of the first situation, a blow to the jaw. This has nothing to do with turning my music down, which I will, it has to do with threatening my person, getting im my face, and expecting compiance. You get more with sugar than salt homies........

In the second case, I had a mad problem neighbor in a paper thin apartment building next door, a single mother with a moustache and meth problem, who could not call come over and be nice, but just called the cops at the drop of a hat. I couldn't turn on my stereo without having police at the door 15 minutes later for the first few months. Eventually, after one occasion, I went over there, and told her that me, "my roomates and freinds don't ever call the cops when you interrupt us when yelling at and beating the ____ out your child, chill the hell out. She called the cops again the next day, and at that point, I asked the officer what the noise ordinance was, and he said "basically I can "ask" you turn it down, but I can't "tell" you to do it." I asked if there was a solid DB and time restriction, and he said no law exists, it is more of a means to bust up loud parties, which I never really had. But me listing to some 36 Mafia while playing a racing game was kosher.

After that conversation, I never had cops at my house again, except one unrelated occassion when my tires were slashed.

Do I have a right to enjoy Hi-Fi sound in my own home? I am not too sure, but the Rock Springs P.D. thinks so!

I am not going to bother with any more rants on that highly judgemental article, but comparing me and my hoopty to the D.C. sniper and a rifle gets you the finger. Sorry, I had my thug days in the past, and the system was the only "gangsta" habit I would let myself carry on to my years in my twenties.

And as for the crimes I committed in my past days, I didn't have much of a system in my worst days. Any major crime I ever committed was influenced by alcohol. I don't blame the liquor, or lack of system, I blame it on being a stupid punk kid with nothing better to do. So up yours lady!

I just read every article available, and then checked the references. Very few of the links I tried, (I made it about halfway down the list from the top) worked and only one of seemed to be of more than a tiny amount useful.

It would seem from this search so far, that the author is going around, reading articles and taking tiny bits of the articles facts, and pasting the together to make the "boom car car audio terriorist" sound like somebody comparable to Adolph Hitler, Osama, Saddam, Tony Montana, Al Capone, and other tyrannical figures in history.

I can agree with about half of the facts stated, but the other half are such an abomination to the facts that it all naseates me waaaaay worse than my car audio ever will!

maybe

i feel pretty alive and surprisingly sharp and quick witted- think she is bending the truth a bit??? i thought 153db would do a bit more according to her >_<

Some of the medical stuff I could definetly agree with to an extent, but stuff like that is bull. Things like the blurred vision because your eyes are moving, decreased periperal vision and the like I belive totally, sometimes I have to turn it down just to drive the car properly.

As for the deadly over time endorphin rushcomparable to arsenic in small doses every day, not buying it at all. I totally believe that the endorphin rush is there, and does give a "runners high" and that it could be addictive (explains buying gear like crack!), but as for killing you like poison, wouldn't runners be dropping dead too.

I expeirence sometimes some pressure in the chest and face that can make it hard to breathe, but that is why I like building systems that are breathtaking on multiple levers
