my last lil bump was a 15" kicker L7 with my gf's crossfire cfa-1000d amp. it was just too big (the sub w/ box). i got a 6 cf box to fit in my trunk some how. i like the sound of the kicker but they just need a big box. i think i am going to go with a 12" L7 this time. the amp im looking into getting a deal off ebay. i know the kicker sub is 750 rms. maybe a mono or a 2 channel amp w/ a ratting of 500-1000w (depends on how good of a deal i can get off ebay) with my project in mind here is the question now. when i got the 15 i listened to alot of rap song with alot of bass. now i listen to alot of rock and hard stuff. but once in a while i like to hear some bad azz bass. i was thinking of going ported box but, i think i sealed would be better in my case ? is this true... i will be making my own box (i work at lowes) im not too sure how to make a slot ported box, so i will be going pvc pipe. can i make a ported box and put plugs in the ports when i want to listed to rock then take them out when i want to hear the bass, does this sound like a good idea? if i forgot anything ill answer it later. any help would be great on a box that i would need. thanks guys , ck Replies (3) swez on 01/24/2008 04:20:54 Sealed is a good way to go for quick fire bass notes that need to be crisp and accurate. Ported just bring up the bass at the tuning frequency a few more dB. You can use a ported box as mentioned and just plug the port(s) when you want less low-end bass. The 2008 Kicker L7 12" recommends the following enclosure ranges: sealed box volume: 0.88-2.00 cu. ft. ported box volume: 1.75-3.25 cu. ft. Knowing that, consider how big you want the box when ported, but at the same time, when using port plugs, keep the internal air space below 2.0 cu. ft. for sealed. A single or dual 4" port(s) make the most sense here, depending on where you want the ports tuned. The lower the PTF, (Port Tuning Freq) the longer the port(s) will need to be. Swez ckoscin2 on 01/26/2008 02:38:03 i will keep this in mind and let u guys know what i get when the time comes....i went to the mall today and walked out with a 40" hd lcd tv $$$... the gf had to have it, i think it pushed back the finish date a lil. ill have to save up some and/or look harder on ebay. i really want another zapco ref750, that amp i had befor was the best but it was on the higher end of the dollar amount. then i was thinking of going crossfire. another amp brand i have tryed befor and found to also be good and never failed me. how are the kicker amps i found one that makes 750W @ 2ohm RMS, its the zx750.1 model. whould this also make a good amp to use in my case ? is there any others that i should think about ? swez on 01/26/2008 05:25:47 Yes, the Kicker zx-750.1 is a very good match for the L7 Solo sub. When looking for strong sub amps for the L7, 750-1000 watts RMS @ 2ohms is a very good range. When porting, you'll need a Subsonic or Infrasonic filter as well. That feature is available in many of the newer Class D power amps or you can use F-Mods if the amp does not have that feature. Crossfire, Kicker, JL, JBL, Alpine and Infinity all make high quality Class D amps. Kenwood has a few as well, but they are not Alpine's MRP-M850 is a very solid choice and well priced too: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=120&i=500MRPM850&tp=115 That Kicker is also on sale at Crutch: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=120&i=206ZX7501&tp=115 This is a good time to pick up quality gear from large dealers, distributors and retailers. They have to blow out inventory for tax purposes and cutting the price moves the product. This is an optimal time to buy at very good discounts.
