Hey all looking for your help again. I current own a set of CDT HD642 3 way component sets with the SatNet & SubNet 642 crossovers. My problem is that the factory location for the 4" midrange in my VW is extremely shallow and requires a small magnet diameter. Can you help me find a speaker of equal or better quality with max 1.75" mounting depth and a magnet diameter of 1in? I have already measured the size and depth of a CDT HD3 but the magnet diameter was too large. By changing brands of mids would this affect the overall sound of the speakers (ie not sound right due to the frequency balance etc?) It will have to sound better then what I am doing now by keeping the stock 4in and running the CDT 6.5" and 1" tweeter ha ha. Thanks, Jason Replies (2) Grdevs24zero on 01/20/2008 21:51:43 Going from one speaker design to another can sometimes drastically change the tonality and balance of the sound. Not all speakers are created equal, even if they were intended to fill the same frequency range. Just so we're clear, you're wanting to replace the stock 4", because your CDT replacement does not fit? One simple option (if you don't mind taking such drastic measures) is to enlarge the hole and/or space the speaker out some. Another is to skip the 3 way all together and go 2 way, but I doubt you'd want to consider that because of the money already invested. I've been in this boat many times. You might want to try looking at some home audio drivers, there are quite a few options available there and you may come across some to fit your needs. www.partsexpress.com and www.madisound.com both have a pretty good selection. swez on 01/20/2008 22:38:44 That's tough call and 24Zero points all fingers in the right direction. The crossovers for CDT are optimized specifically for their drivers. (Above average products to be sure) You may need to get very creative in this one and modify the factory speaker locations to fit these speakers well. (Some metal cutting and/or modified speaker baffle plates) You may find that mounting the 4" MR and tweeter are very good option for the front stage. The 6.5" MB driver may be best in the rear stage and behind you. (Rear panels or parcel shelf) This plan gives much flexibilty to the install and MB is from the rear and we only need a strong 2 channel amp to power all 3 drivers.
