INSTALLATION PROBLEM: Kenwood 515-S

Hi,

I am in the middle of installing my Kenwood 515-S CD Receiver into
my 1997 Buick Riviera. After hunting down the parts today all day
(dash kit, harness, etc.) and hooking it all up, it doesn't quite
work. When I turn on the ignition or switch the car to ACC the deck
powers up (only the backlights, no text or display). Then, no more
than two seconds later, it goes black and powers off. All of the
wires are connecting to the appropriate pigtails of the harness. I
have checked the fuses for the car. Also I have checked, and replaced
the fuse that is on the "constant" or yellow power wire coming from
the deck. In an attempt to test for a short in the "constant" and
"switching" (red) wires; I transposed them. None of my efforts has
changed the outcome. The reset button of the deck only seems to begin
this process again (power on, and two seconds later, power off). This
seems quite odd to me. Someone with experience please assist me; My
car is staying in pieces until I figure this out.

Thanks!
Joshua

you have a infinity system in your buick there is a amp someplace that you need to either go around (by rewireing all the speaker unless they are infinity) or try to find them and wire it up right.... I do not know what to tell you there I just know what the symtoms are as I replaced a deck for a freind and it would do it , I made him go to someone who knew what to do and he fixed it . So look on here for a infinity problem or on the net , or wait for the golds to answer you

My system is just the stock GM Delco. I do not think that that theory is applicable. Please expand on it if I am mistaken. Thanks for such a quick reply.

Thanks Again,
Joshua

if your system has a premimum sound system or high quailty stock system it is prob infinity I am telling you that this is more than likely your problem. If you are not sure pull out a speaker and see if it is inifinity or ACDelco . I would bet a dollar it is infinity, sounds just like the problem I had. The deck would come on light up and then go off mabey even a little sound but it was only about 2 to 3 seconds worth of time. I mabey wrong but by the decription you gave me it sounds exactly like the problem I had, and I didn't know it was infinity untill later. Wait for one of the golds to answer if you want but that is my guess .

GM uses bose.........

I will will email you my address to send the dollar..

just kidding. But down to business, I don't know if that would cause the symptons described. You said the display does not show anything? A premium sound problem usually gives really strange, or bad sound(sometimes followed by puffs of smoke)... Was the fuse you replaced blown? Do you have a test light or multimeter? You can test if it is premium sound by touching a battery inbetween the speaker wires(The factory speaker wires disconnected from the deck). If they pop, there is no amp, if they don't pop you either have a premium sound, or have the wrong wires. Check all voltages at the deck. Did you buy an aftermarket wire hrns, or hardwire to the factory wiring?

Peritus on 09/1/2003 00:50:43
No, there is no display on the deck....only the backlighting. The ejection motor is also activated, though there is no disc inside. My stereo is labeled "Concert Sound II" and it doesn't seem to be premuim based on that. I do not have a test light or multimeter though I believe that its time to buy one. Please note that this occurs even when all speaker wires are disconnected. The battery test produced a pop, so I supposed there really is no amplifier. All of my connections were originally through an aftermarket harness. In my efforts to fix it, I did run a ground to the chassis (Which gave the same results).
Thanks again for the help!

May need to do a bench check up on this HU to determine if it is indeed faulty or not. Is this a brand new HU or did you get it used?

Seems like something in the wiring may be amiss or there is a problem in the HU power distribution system. (internal power supply)

Is this a flip face or removable face model HU? If yes, try a very close inspection of the pins and female connectors. May have a few tarnished pins or damaged female recepticals that are not getting full voltage to the various stages of the display etc.

Ok well GM uses bose... The truck I was talking about was DODGE ...my bad I am betting that there is a amp that he missed . I may be wrong as I have never messed with bose system but I am pretty sure that what I have stated to be is his problem, I am telling you tis the same thing that happend to me

There could be a short some place I guess , the only way to be sure is to run new power ground and constant ,

Is this a new deck? If so you could take it back and get a new one in exchange .

Do you have a older deck around that works? put that in and see if it works proper

Sorry if I was wrong to begin with but I still say It sounds pretty close to the problem I had , went through 2 decks before we figured out the problem.

Try hooking the red and yellow wires directly to the positive on the battery, and the black to negative. This will tell you if its the reciever or the car.

I wonder if this guy (Riv owner) ever resolved the problems noted?

still waitin on my dollar.....

His Riv has the same sound system I have in my Buick. Concert Series II. No amps here, just Comps (5/4") in front, 6x9 in rear and a HU with CD and AM/FM w/ 5 band EQ.

Not a bad sounding HU, just no ummph!
