Hey everyone, I'm new to the site... but not that new to car audio... but i'm having problems with my (weak) amp powering my two subs...

amp: Sony XMD9001 (Sony Xplod 1300max)
subs: (2) Kicker COMPvrs 12"

4 awg power/ground.. 80amp fuse @ battery, 2 30 amp fuses in amp.

8 awg speaker wire from amp to speakers wired at 2 ohm's...

but anyways.. when i try to turn my volume up, the protection goes off... only when they are bridged... when i have them ran normally, it does fine, except for killing the power to my radio/amp because my alternator isn't powerful enough..

but why is my protection going off when i turn the volume up?

the subs are wired at 2 ohms
The amp is not stable bridged at 2 ohms. It will run at low volume, but when the volume is turned up, the amp sees the low ohm load and goes into protect.
99% of all amps are only stable at 4 ohms bridged.

yeah, i wired it to 2 ohms... i have them in a ported box, can't remember the specs, but the box is 1.25 cub feet..., also i havethe subs sitting in my back seat, they hit hard right now, but not hard enough....

what is another amp that you would recommend>?

first I would recommend putting the subs in the back before you have a wreck and launch them, or have somebody walk by and decided he likes them more then your window.....

is that a mono amp? Can you run the speakers in stereo 4 ohm?

yeah, i wish i could put them in my trunk.. but if you've ever seen an older model mustang, my trunk is like 5ft x 2ft... if that, and the opening isn't more than 13 inches...

i'm not real sure if it is a mono amp, and yeah i can run the speakers in 4ohm, but i was just preferring more poewr, but it seems that, a) my car isn't strong enough with stock alternator, and b) my amp is weak.

thx though guys.

Hum... this amp is a Class D and rated at 550 watts RMS @ 4 ohms and 900 RMS @ 2 ohms. The subs are rated at 400 watts RMS per each.

Here, the better choice is a pair of 2+2 DVC's, wired in series/parallel for a net 2 ohm load. Another option is a stronger, more efficient 4+4 DVC sub, wired in parallel. A single strong 15", (1000 RMS) would do the trick and depending on the sub used, even less box space can be used.

Kicker's are good subs and easily sold for a fair price to the right person. With that cash, a 15" can be found and build a box to fit the trunk. (Kicker's love huge boxes while some brands are not so space hungry) Have a look at the Power Acoustik Fubar Series:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8831_Power+Acoustik+FUBAR-15W.html

This is a very high efficiency sub, can take 1000 watts RMS and made to make some serious bass. This is much more efficient than any Kicker sub ever will be. Now, we need to find out the enclosure specs?

Ported, still a pretty large box here, but at say 10/12" height, it may fit in the trunk with some very careful planning. Here, a modified wedge box could be very interesting to consider. Do your rear seats flip down like most hatch backs?

H1 = 12"
H2 = 10"
D = 18"
W = 40"
Wall thickness = 3/4" MDF
Ports: 4.0" dia. 10.5" long x 2 ports

That's 3.67 cf internal, minus the sub and ports displacements. Hum.... need a shoehorn to make this one fit in the trunk huh?

Thoughts/Comments?

that sounds good, i have been thinking about doing that anyways, going to 1 solid 15, maybe with room for a second later on.. but on the other hand i drive a convertable, that's why my trunk space is *hit... good idea, i'm going to look into all that right now.. =]

I am a little familiar with mustangs actually SMILE

the older fox bodies are a little hard to fit stuff in, my sn95 is not much different. even if it requires you build a new box, the money spent($30?) would be worth the safety factor, you really need to realize how dangerous that box in the back seat is.......

yeah i saw your momstang a few days ago.. it looks nice, makes me want to do more visual mods to mine instead of just performance...

i'll take some pics of what i've got when i get my camera back from my buddy.. it is pretty dangerous to tell you the truth..
