hi there i wounder if the Bigger magnet of the sub the better it is in handling or what ????? thanx Replies (1) Swez on 08/31/2003 09:05:54 No... size of the magnet is really not a key factor in quality or sound of a given sub. Many cheap subs use industrial grade ferrite magnets. They have low magnetic field strength properties and have to use massive magnets (several stacked in a column) to get adequate magenetic flux fields around the voice coils. There are several other materials that have much higher magnetic flux properties than common ferrites. Stontium, Alnico V, Neodimium and rare earth Cobalt magnets are much more powerful magnets. These are very expensive and only found on high quality, expensive subs and smaller full range speakers. The mass of these type of magnets are so much less than ferrites as they have such large flux densities, the size and weight of the magnet and supporting structure are much less, and give better results to control and excite cone movement. Hope I did not get too deep and well over your head with this explaination. It sort of like car engines. Engines in the 60's in 70's used huge pistions and larger block V-8's to get reasonable HP. Today, the engine technology is such that a 3.0 liter engine can deliver 300 HP. In the old days, it took 350 CID (6.0 liter?) or more, to get that kind of HP. Same basic idea... lighter materials, better cooling and more efficient designs made all the difference. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
