Hey guys..Been a while! Am doing install for my son and am trying to use existing gear. 2005 "Preloaded" Eclipse 6124BXD(2 12" 4ohm DVC 200watts RMS each) 2004 Alpine Type S 4ohm DVC (300 watts RMS) 2004 Alpine MRP-M350 (200 watts rms x 1 @ 4ohms-350 watts rms @ 2ohms). 2003 Bazooka ELA 300.1 (specs from bazooka leave alot to be desired but as much as I can surmise its about 300 watts rms @ 2ohms). The front stage is set in stone( 6.5" Polk db comps with an Alpine MRP-T220 amp). Head unit is also set in stone( Older model Alpine 4volt out unit). My problem is that I really want to use the loaded Eclipse unit because its a good looking box but with dual 4ohm VCs I cant get 2ohm amp load to get the most out of either amp listed. I said all that to ask this...since both class D amps are 2 ohm stable, what would be the down side to running 1 amp for each sub (wired parallel for 2ohm load). The box is a dual chamber 1.0sqft per. Anyone? Thanks, Mike COFFEE Replies (11) SQLThump on 01/1/2008 02:53:23 Welcome back! we would be happy to help! Alright, the Eclipse subs sound like a decent pair, and if in a preloaded box, should work pretty well. But as for the amps, this could and at the same time could not work well. The main drawbacks are a little more complex install and setup, and possible alightly more current draw than neccassary, but thats not too much a problem. The main issue I am seeing here is possibly damaging overpowering. If dialed in with a voltmeter, you should be able to accururately dial in 200RMS to each sub. I am not sure what exactly the voltage goal would be, but we an get that figured out. The second issue I would see, which isn't too significant, is matching up the gains on both amps to make sure each subwoofer is recieving equal wattage. Aside from that, if you have the neccassary parts, connectors and room, hell, go for it. It will work. I personally would take the single Type-S and the MRP-M350, but I see how enclosing it and the loss of cone area would suck. To each his own, and I will never hate on somebody for trying to save a few bucks. I would just reccomend being a little extra careful with the gains on initial install, so you don't accidently fry something. If you need any more help just shout, SQL swez on 01/1/2008 20:07:45 Is that you Mike P? (AKA Saintanddolphin) From the gear mentioned. it's gotta be. Yes, you can use 1 amp per sub if you want to use what's on hand. I see 3 low budget, yet doable options that would also work. 1. Use the MRP-M350 and the type S sub pairing only (Mentioned already and a good suggestion too) 2. Rewire the boxed Eclipse subs in full parallel (1 ohm) and find a low cost Class D amp to power them adequately (1 ohm stable like a few HiFonics amps) 3. Leave the box as is and buy a low cost 2 channel sub amp that can deliver a solid 350-400 Wrms @ 4 ohms Both Class D amps mentioned earlier are too strong for a single Eclipse sub. If your son gets to tweaking things and gets it wrong, he'll blow these subs post-haste. (Think "Dummy Proofing" here) Remember he's young and showing off beyond common sense is likely. (We were kids once... right?) Comments? Swez PS I just tried calling your old phone number and it's not valid anymore. I take it a few things have changed since we last chatted some time ago? If you want/desire to chat, shoot me an e-mail and we can exchange phone numbers. (If you wish) I hope all is well... but something tells me an "ill wind" has blown through and there's a few stories that need to be shared with an old friend. If that is true, (or not) you know how to reach me. Pick up the phone dude... swezdp@yahoo.com bamasaint on 01/1/2008 21:00:42 Yep, old friend, its me. Bought a new home in May, in the woods!! Thankfully, no "ill wind", boys just getting older and want all of dads old stuff !!!!! My new truck has a decent factory Alpine system so I am parting with all my old gear. Thanks SQL for your your time and comments. Did "raw' install today on sons car. Still havent decided about sub/amp combination. I have the Type S and the MRP in it now but am going to try all configurations mentioned this weekend before I pretty everything up. Swez, I will send you new #s tonight.Call anytime. Mike swez on 01/6/2008 05:25:04 Yes, that amp is enough to power the dual 12" Eclipse subs mentioned earlier. The main drawback here, it can pull some serious juice on heavy bass hits. (Almost 50 A's) Setting the amp gain with a meter will help minimize that issue. Once the gain and bass boost features are dialed in, seal them so the lad cannot mess with them and damage his subs. ;-) Swez bamasaint on 01/7/2008 21:21:46 Took the Eclipse subs and box back to C.C. today. I could not get any specific info on the subs...no rms #s, no T/S #s infact Eclipse didnt know what the model # was!!1 swez on 01/8/2008 04:43:54 As we discussed on the phone the other night, they may be knock offs of an Eclipse brand but not genuine Eclipse subs. (That may be why Eclipse did not have specs on them) One thing I have learned about retail... beware of the "copycats". There are a lot of cheap knock offs out there that copy well known brands and even use their logo, but may not be the real deal. Some knock offs are easy to detect. (Sound Storm vs Sound Stream for example) Where to now Kemo-Sabe? Let me know what you think. I bought them today. Looks like they will fit my needs if as advertised. Mike COFFEE swez on 01/10/2008 05:33:48 Insignia is a "House Brand" product that is marketed by BB. I don't know who makes them or how they test out, but did hear a pair of Insignia 12's and one of their amps the other day. They did not sound too bad at all. This kid did a good job matching the amp, sub and sealed box design for his rig. Was at a school and this guy was showing off his new bass rig to a few buddies as I was packing out my van. The bass sounded pretty good at 30 feet away. Swez PS They may not be as solid as Alpine, RF or MTX products, but at $0.50/ watt, not all that bad. (If it can make it through the short warranty plan) bamasaint on 01/10/2008 19:43:10 Well, lets test them. Show me the way. Mike GRIN swez on 01/10/2008 20:59:20 Ask and ye shall receive. Since it is better to give then receive, I give you this video as a freebie. SMILE http://www.icixsound.com/iv/view_video.php?viewkey=929b125f8597834fa83a See how that works? Swez PS Yes, a speaker/sub can be used in place of the load resistor, but prepare for some serious noise in the process. The noise/sound can be muted with a thick towel or blankie over the speaker.
