What model JVC HU do you have and did you use a conversion harness in this install?

sounds like you have the +12v constant wire(yellow) hooked up and not the +12v switched(red). Check to see that the red wire has +12v on it with the key on.

Most guys don't use the ILL wire if the HU has a manual dimmer feature for the display. It's OK to use it, but be sure to use a dedicated ground wire for the HU and not use the factory harness ground at all. Most aftermarket HU's need a dedicated ground when outboard amps are used or added later. (Noise issues are often eliminated this way)

well the +12v wire is fine and the +12v switched is fine and i have tried using a new ground do i have to have all the speakers wired up aswell becaue the hu still doesnt work other than the display comming on for 5 seconds when i press the display button

I would start by disconnecting the orange dimmer wire. IF that does not work, There is a feature on JVC radios as well as a few others called blackout mode. The radio lights turn off completely unless a button is pressed or CD is inserted.
Give us the model number and we will find the owner's manual and tell you how to turn it off.

wow, pulled this one out from the past.....

ok so you had a similar problem with the stock radio? The display comes on for long enough to see the time?

How did you check the two wires to make sure that they are fine? If you don't have a meter then try connecting your red wire(switched) to the same wire as your yellow(constant). In this mode the radio will not turn off with the key but that will confirm that the Red wire(+12v switched) is dead)

I'd try that as well... Once upon a time i had a JVC that shorted out, so i was playing with it just because i was young and stupid and i happened to hook the white pos+ wire to the 12v source and oddly enough it turned on and functioned perfectly of course short one speaker channel... i of course didn't use my good stuff i used an old battery and crap speakers... Don't do this unless ur fed up with it and r gonna throw it out...
