In-dash NAV/DVD help needed, again

Hi all, and Merry Christmas!!

For those of us lucky enough to get a little extra spending money durin the holidays, now is a great time for some A/V upgrages!

I have decided to put the rest of my system on hold (mainly because it's too cold to work outside for long). However, I am finally prepared to spend some money on my first In-dash DVD/Nav system.

The Eclipse AVN-7000 has been the main unit in my sites, since I've heard it has superior navigation, and allows you to store all navigation features on the hard drive (don't have to leave the CD in like some Pioneer units). I want a flip-out, not a double-din, so this is anoter reason I like this unit. Also, I go on a lot of snowboarding trips with a friend, so I would like a unit that I can bypass the parking brake safety wire and be able to play DVDs while driving. I don't want a unit that requires any more modifications than that (I've heard some units use gyros or speed sesnors as well??).

Anyways, please let me know if any of you have experience with this unit, or any furher knowledge about this or other units that may help me make a decision.

Thank you all,

-Ian-

I have always been partial to the Pioneer units, but they do not have a single din unit with a hard drive. The double din Z-1, Z-2 units have the hard drive. However, I do not know that much about the Eclipse units.

I do know that every aftermarket navigation unit is bypassable whether it has a gyro, speed sense or not. (I have done several pioneer Z1s). Hypocritically I do not recommend bypassing them, but it can be done.

I agree with you on the Pioneer units. I have always had Pioneer head units, and this is the first time I'm considering another brand. I would definitely get the z1 or z2 if I was getting a double-din unit, but i am putting something else in the space below the single din unit.

I understand and agree with everyone's concerns about playing DVDs while driving. I do not get distracted easily, and it is only for when I have friends riding with me on long trips.

does anyone else have any suggestions about this or similar units??

After some thought, I have decided I am willing to do a double-DIN unit. As far as I can tell, the Pioneer AVIC-Z2 seems to be the most well-rounded/featured unit on the market. I will be expanding to a full stereo at some point, but would like to get the unit with the best, most user-friendly navigation.

I will be integrating my ipod, using the bluetooth, and at some point adding an additional tv screen. And as mentioned above, I would like to be able to play DVDs while driving, since I do many road trips with just one front seat passenger.

I hope you guys can offer me some more input this time around. Thank you.

I simply love this unit!
it reads 24bit CDs, has a 30gig HD for music and nav, bluetooth, ipod, xm, sirius, backup camera, voice command.. just to name a few.

I installed one in my coworker's avalanche, and he has a flip down monitor with a DVD player in it. It is set up so that either the HU or the DVD can watch the display on the other, (both the same, or each independent) Plus, we connected a game port, so the xbox is installed now.

The thing i like the most about the navigation is that it will tell you which lanes go straight and which exit miles before you get to the exits in big cities.

Thanx for your input. I spent the last 2 hours searching for a bypass, and finally found one. I am now set on getting this unit. I will probably order it tomorrow, and will post pictures once I have installed it.

Oh, if anyone has any advice on where/how to find the speed sensor wire in an 06 subaru wrx, that would be great.

also kittle, any quirks or special suggestions about installing this unit? Thank you.

Just ordered it! Got a refurbed one w/ warranty for $924! I also ordered the ipod connector. I believe I can hook up my external hard drive through this as well, which would be awesome.

I also got a printout of all the wire color codes and locations in my vehicle from the guys who installed my alarm/remote start. Not much makes me happier than personable installers that are willing to help you "outside the box."

They also told me that their wholesale price on this unit was $1600. Just FYI if anyone was interested.

Hopefully I will be posting pictures next week!

The only thing I can think of right off the bat is that it has to be installed fairly level +or- 10 degrees for the gyros to work properly. (it will display acceleration, brake, right and left turns in g force).
