Merry Chritsmas to all...

Well folks, yet another year has passed and here we are at the last few days of 2007.

I want to thank you all for your participation, donations and most of all, the friendship and respect that is found here on CK. This is a rare site on the web.

We have broken all common conventions that other sites thrive on... Bickering, flaming others, resorting to attacks of all kinds and the like are not found here. That's something to be proud of.

Many have come and gone but the core is still intact. For those who have earned their Golds, you have done well in serving this site, its members and our cause. I commend you all for such excellence and patience along the way.

Look at the new golds who have yet to be knighted... they will be in time. We have 2-3 that will make it next year, if they stay the course.

Finally, my hat is off to Walter Hargrave for yet another year of hosting this site. He has been diligent, gave us tools when we asked for them and funded this site through thick and thin. Walt is a truly remarkable man of many talents and passions. (Kudos to you Walt) CLAP USFLAG

Swez

PS For those who have benefited from this site and have yet to donate to such a worthy cause, may I invite you to set a few bucks aside and keep this site viable for 2008. We are here to serve others and share knowledge... not fleese the flock or pick anyones' pockets. Help as you can. It's much appreciated!

So true, and bring those brave men and women home ASAP. I so much hope we pull out of this conflict soon. We have shown our might, the valor and now it's time to let these warring countries sort things out for themselves and hopefully learn to choose wise and peaceful leaders in a psudo-democratic way. (Saving face is one thing. Saving our country from internal melt-down is job #1)

We have many more pressing issues here at home to deal with and it's high time we spend our energy and resources on things that will strengthen this nation and not divide it. There are much better ways to spend the billions of dollars we have thrown at this war, right here at home.

Yes, pray for those who serve... and pray that our leaders would get their priorities in line with what the common person/taxpayer is funding... We need a new direction in this country as the old ways are obsolete and broken. War used to be good for the economy. But things at home take a much higher presidence.

What good is military might if we fall apart and into deep disarray like USSR, not so long ago. Reagan had a vision and a plan that worked. It's time we look at the model he started and bring the US back to the status it once enjoyed? (Maybe it is time to boot the power mongers out and start with a fresh slate... rebuild America to what she could become)

Swez

PS Hey GW Bush, I voted for you and you have let me and millions of American citizens down. It's high time that all branches of the Govt remember what they are elected to do... serving the people of this once great land. We are falling apart at the seams and all you guys can muster is internal squabbling. Knock that crap off and get back to the business at hand... keeping America strong and tending to the business here at home!!! Enough gamesmanship and power plays already... let's focus on the needs of all American's, right here at home.

End rant

elect Ron Paul !
The terrorists are winning, we jumped right into their trap with this one. They can not defeat us with weapons alone, but they outsmarted us. By dragging us into this war and causing us to spend billions, they have suicide bombed our wallets and hit us where it really hurts. At the same time they have turned us against our leaders and caused a state of disarray and distrust. The government has intruded into our personal lives (patriot act), caused financial hardship (oil prices), and led this rediculously expensive wild goose chase for way too long.

I was a long time hard core supporter of Bush, and the ideal that you have to finish what you start, but I am ready for some new blood in the white house... or at least some brains.

Christmas, thanksgiving, politics, bah humbug! give me Halloween freakouts, and New Years booze! I gat paid on the 31st, and my resturant is closed the first and second. Fun!

More fun, is the check I will have from the insane hours I worked the last two weeks. This will be getting me my long awaited subs!

swez on 12/28/2007 08:28:43
Bah Humbug? As you get older and start a family, all these humbugs will become important traditions and interests later.

Frankly, the thing that ruins Christmas are all the selling hype and commercialism & materialism that is pitched before Thanksgiving and all through the holiday season. (You need to buy this Rolex watch, buy that diamond ring, drive this Lexus vehicle, have these expensive gadgets etc., or we're not cool) Nonsense... utter foolishness.

What a bunch of crap! That is not what the holidays are all about unless one is a lunatic, has tons of cash to throw around or likes tromping the malls and ring up some ungodly credit card bills that take 6 months to pay off later. That's all nuts in my opinion.

A simpler approach is always a good plan. Yes, buy a few well priced gifts or give gift cards so that the recipient can buy what they like, wherever they wish. (Let them stomp the malls or shop via the Internet for the gifts we can't afford) hehe If they want an expensive gift, they fork out the difference.

I dunno... as I get older, "Holiday Hype" has totally lost its appeal. Now, I pay cash for everything and if it's not enough to buy that expensive widget, they make up the difference. Simple huh? Why spend 10% of our annual earnings, (or mortgage future earnings) on lavish gifts we really cannot afford? All sounds very dumb to me these days. A few simple things are all most really need anyway. (So yes, Humbug to that as well)

Sounds like you worked your tail off the past few weeks? That's great and soon you will have those long awaited subs. What are you planning to buy? (The good stuff right?) SMILE

I have major problems with corporate advertising, and absolutely hate the Crhristmas seasons stupidity. I really am not much for any holidays for many reasons. They usually end up dysfunctional with mom (I was nearly the culprit of this years dysfunction after some beef with my brother, and a few too many eggnogs) or numerous attempts at being bribed by expensive gifts for lack of attention from dad. Screw it all, give me a 40 oz and send me on my way.

So to sum it up, it was too much fake affection and B.S. on one side, and a Christmas tree with nothing under it besides dysfunction and pychotic behavior............this is what the holidays have forged themselves into in my mind.

When I have kids, I'm going to explain every year how Santa could have sworn that they wanted coal......or gravel....

The holidays have been madness at the resturant. We lost a few key employees due to excessive man hours, and a chef who will cuss and throw things when angry. Luckily enough, I am on his good side, and he has yet to throw a plate on my part, but if you mess up the tiniest bit, he's dropping the F-Bomb with his own flavorful twist.

The madness of the holidays and intense levels of business with the season has had everybody stressed and on edge. We are all ready for New Years to be over, take our couple of days off, and go back to our semi-normal existances.

As for the syatem, I was toying around with Winisd for a few, and couldn't figure out for the life of me what the hell was going on with designing enclosures on that. With the transfer function graphs, it seems nearly impossible to creat a nice deep bass situation for the Dayton 15", or to find any decent upper bass drivers.

I really want to do something absolutely insane with the front doors, like running a 10" or two 8"s in each door. It would have to be some smal enclosures though. Word is beginning to get around amongst the homise that something waaaaay over the top is going on, and I can't dissapoint . I gotta reputation to maintain and a lot of people to impress, so it better be something sick to both the ear and the eye.

cplkittle on 12/28/2007 11:28:42
WinIsd is good for calculating port lengths, other than that, all the graphs are useless once the enclosure is placed in a vehicle. Vehicle acoustics and cabin gain throw a wrench in the performance expectations. Roll a window down and you have a whole new variable.

WinIsd is a good program, and probably one of the most accurate with all other aspects, but in our case I wouldn't worry on all of the other charts.
I look at two main things:

- Box size & Port size

- Excursion..Input proper power handling, Xmax, resistance, and input power and check the driver - excursion screen. Watch the low end excursion below port tuned frequency, and experiment with subsonic filters to get the excursion below xmax. In the small box, got to eq/filters and add a subsonic filter (high pass).

These are the two most important design/setup factors as far as I am concerned. The peak SPL is always around 10dB below actual output in an SUV, and 6-8 dB below in a car.

swez on 12/28/2007 14:20:01
Agreed, ISD is good at giving a lot of "what if I do it this way" comparitives, but once inside the vehicle, the acoustical properties of any sub/enclosure will change due to transfer function and other anomolies inside the vehicle.

Dual 8's might be very interesting in the doors for midbass punch. They'll go down to 50-60 Hz, but in a free air type install or Infinite Baffle system, cone control ay high SPL would mean using very stiff spiders to limit Xmax.

As for the Christmas situation, I get it well. Our house was pretty chaotic as kids too and it got to a point that all the drama just took away all the fun we thought we had as small kids.

A better answer came many years later when I got married and more connected to a less dysfunctional family unit. My ex did Christmas well and her parents were very good about it too. It felt like a whole new experience and a chance to rewrite the old scripts. It felt like a real family gathering and good vibes were the norm. We did it simple and nice as a couple for a few years until the kids came along.

That's when it got a little nutty... we'd trek off from Chicago to Texas and have Christmas at her brother and sister-in-laws place and their kids. That too felt like "controlled chaos", but there were definitely good vibes during the kiddie naps.

Can you imagine a 1500 mile road trip (One way) with a squalling baby or two in the back seat? Then much of the same on the way back? Well, we did that for a couple of years and I finally said... "ENOUGH ALREADY" and that stopped the annual pilgramage to Texas. W/o kids, it was a great get-away. But once the babies came, not so fun.

All this to say, at some point in your life, you'll have a place of your own, settle down with some nice gal and can write a whole new script about doing Holidays in a better way. If being with family is too much, delete or limit that part of the script and skip all the BS.

If one can get away for a few days and do something we really enjoy, all the better. That's a true Christmas sanity break. Boy, if I had $500.00 to blow, that's exactly what I would do right now. A Road Trip and some nice trout fishing would be just the right thing about now. GRIN

The time will come when you move out and start a fresh life on your own terms. Until then, limiting contact with sick, dysfuntional people is a very smart plan. Besides, we have this place to hang out and talk about stuff that we enjoy and how to make it all happen. That's a definite plus huh?

Happy New Year my friend,
Swez

Growing up with the two different styles of holidays is weird for sure. Just the two different cultures of my mother and father's families was weird.

I'm just glad it's over, and am now chillin' enjoying my well deserved day off, and giving a big single finger salute to the blizzard and my back pain with my good ol' buddies Peppermint Snapps and hot chocolate...GRIN

I had me a great lady for about 6 months, but unfortunalty didn't get to enjoy all of the holiday benifits of their family. There was a nice gifty exchange, but divorced mom and dad didn't quite agree on wheter or not I should go on a ski trip and share a room in a lodge with their virgin child.....that was a few years back, and the closed thing to a seroius relationship I ever had. I could go for that all over agian, but think I was and still am a littl too young for the settling down. For now I'll enjoy my drink, the great company of good freinds here, and plot on my new bass engine ome more...but I'll move that to a new topic.

I would like to take a road trip soon, but I definitely dont have the $500 dollars to blow. Maybe this summer, but my main priority is to work myelf like crazy, and make the hoopty into the "dream bucket" that i have always wanted. I'll be feeling like i'm 19 all over again in a few months. My priorities on the usual fixing of a car are a bit backwards though, it's gotta bump before anything else.......
Now to plot on making it bump.....

Glasses up to you my freind, and may you get less snow this winter than us...

Yes, I get the picture and when the time is right, the opportunities will flow right into place.

This may sound strange, but I was a lot like you at the same point in time... (early 20's) I had little to work with, a lot of drive and determination, but no where to put it to good use. After years of working things out, (some went well while others went badly) have come to the conclusion that we are all here for a purpose and the trick is to find our niche, grab hold of it and ride that bull till we beat it. A tough past does not need to mean a bleak future.

We all have choices and these present opportunities to learn, grow and expand our horizions. There's nothing wrong with humble beginnings and some of the greatest people in history came from rough pasts. I would like to be one of them and see the same for you. (Would that not be a good thing?) Indeed it would. No matter what scale the measuring stick is calibrated for, we do our best, observe what's going on around us and when something good passes through our radar screen, we latch on to it and see where it leads.

A good teacher friend often says... "If we want the good things in life that we see others getting, we have to be willing to do what they did to get there". (Time, effort, patience, determination and getting help from other skilled hands along the way)

That is so true! But it sure is nice to have a few good friends and life coaches handy when life deals a sucker punch that knocks one to the floor. (Yes, I've had my fair share of those punches too) But they also make one stronger, more determined and resilient as well. These serve a great purpose if we process them well and learn from them. Our true friends will lift us off the floor, clean us up and then give us the encouragement and conviction to press on.

If you only knew a few people like that, it would be life changing in time. Just a short time ago, didn't you work in a dead-end job at a gas station? Now, a restaurant and rubbing shoulders with a very talented chef? Latch on to that one for a while and see where it pulls. If it pulls you up to a better place in time, it's worth the effort.

I'm pulling for you... pull for yourself as well. There's a lot of untapped talent just waiting to bust out. "When the student is ready, the teacher/guide will appear." I know this in my gut... prove it to be right for yourself. It won't surprise me, but it will change your life for the better. (MGBWY) Hum, wonder that that one means? I'll tell ya when you are ready to hear it.

Swez

PS Bottoms up on the Snapps and yes, we do need the snow this year. Had a long drought last summer and we need a good dose of precip to get ready for the spring growing season. The late fall precip has been good. But a few good snow days gives work to a lot of private contactor snow plow jockies. They like the work and need the money too. ;-)
