Right, so i want to have a car stero in my bedroom so i got a ac to dv converter and hooked all the power cables up. hook up only 2 speak, because thats all i had at time but no sound, i have 2 sets of speaker wires left , 2 blue/white wires and 1 blue/yellow what i think is remote. can any1 tell me what i can do to make sound come out of my speakers? btw it a kenwood kdc w410 and teh speakers work because i have tried them with my home cd player nathan Replies (10) swez on 12/11/2007 19:35:18 It may have more to do with the power supply being used here. Most HU's need about 5-8 amps of current and 12 volts DC to fire up the internal amps to drive external speakers. Also, there are 2 main wires to give power to plus the ground 1. Red is power on display and lighting 2. Yellow is a constant 12 volts to retain memory and sometimes used to power internal amps 3. Black is the ground wire The Blue lines are remote power feeds to external amps and/or power antenna functions. If there is an Orange line, that's an illumination control line for the dash board. The speaker wires are often paired wires of 4 colors: (Gray, and White are front channel speakers. Purple and green are usually rear speakers) Finally, if the power supply used cannot deliver at least 5A's of current, the amplifiers will not work. Got all that? Swez nathanl on 12/12/2007 02:16:18 yeh thanks mate, i think it might be the amp issue. Is there any way to increse it or will i just have to buy a new converter with a higher amp output? swez on 12/12/2007 03:21:21 A stronger power supply is the key. It's called an AC to DC converter and consists of a transformer, a rectification bridge and some ripple smoothing capacitors. The better ones have variable DC voltage and may even have variable current output as well. However, a good one is often not cheap. I take it your from the UK or Austrailia? What is the AC voltage that comes out of the house AC wall socket? (240 VAC?) Swez nathanl on 12/12/2007 11:18:14 i live in uk so yeh its 240 vac, i bought a AC to DC converter from maplin but i just looked on box and its max is 5amp n that set me back 25 quid. can you recomend where to get a AC to DC converter which will give the amp i require??? swez on 12/12/2007 15:08:50 This could be a tad more challenging as we would want to make sure the HU is working properly before investing in am expensive power supply. (AC/DC converter) This is a stretch, but if you have a good car battery lying around, I'd try to get the Kenwood to power up off that first. Once you have it working, then consider investing in a decent AC/DC converter or use the battery and a low budget battery charger, (2-8 amps) to power this HU. That's the cheapest method and it will work well in most cases too. No, it's not a pretty picture, but not knowing what is available in your area for a reasonable price, this would be a good test. If it works, (and it should) then we can consider better power supplies that will work and do a nice job later. Swez PS Do you have an electronics background to where you can build your own power supply in kit form? nathanl on 12/12/2007 15:46:50 Erm no i have no previous electric experince. I found a old computer power supply and i wierd that up to it. The HU lights up, cds are ejected and player, raidio tuner works aswell as every thing else but still no sound and the power suppy states of a 15 amp max so i cant see it being the amp issue. Am stuck myself now dunt no what to try . nathan swez on 12/13/2007 00:19:46 Check the setup menu on this HU. Some of the better HU's have a feature whereby the internal amps can be disabled and only use the RCA preouts. If this HU has that feature and the internal amps are disabled, that would explain why no audio output to your speakers. If that is not the case, some deeper digging is in order. The HU may have other issues to look into??? Swez ttocs on 12/13/2007 11:12:44 also make sure that all of the connections are good and none of the speaker wires are shorting out as most decks will shut the amp off if it detects that it is shorted to keep from frying the amp. nathanl on 12/13/2007 11:46:22 i looked around on th HU menu and cant find nothing to do with internal amp but i tried turning on all of the opptions i could, worth a try. still no sound though. all connections are good as i know plus they work fine with my other cd player. would it be worth taking it to like a shop that sells stereos and see if they could found out the problem??? swez on 12/14/2007 03:21:23 That might be a very good option at this point if you don't have any knowledgable buddies to test it for you. It would be simple to test and see if the HU is working properly or not. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
