when i connect the ground wire to the car my amp light comes on for less then a second then goes back off. it does this everytime i touch the ground wire to the car. it just will not stay on. what is the problem?

It's just running current through it for just a second, it's probably not good for your amp, keep the ground connected. Do you have an REM line running to the amp to turn it on when the car is on/HU is on? The amp won't turn on with just power and ground to it. It's got a second power line to it to tell it to turn on so your battery isn't drained when your not using it.
Tell us about your amp and what you have setup, this will help us help you, I've gotten a tremendous amount of help by stating all the points needed for the questions I'm asking.
What guage wires are you using?
