I'm going to remove my non-XM standard factory head unit in my '07 Impala to replace with an aftermarket. Anyone know how to get the factory unit out? Do I need to remove the entire lower dash piece or can I pop the bracket out around the unit?

Also, anything else I should know about this deinstall?

You are not going to like this...

You will need a fairly expensive integration module ($125-$200) that takes care of the 29 bit GM Lan & controls Bose, Onstar, vehicle parking assist, vehicle warning chimes, RAP [retained accessory power], audible blinker indicators, and any other chime or warning that normally only plays through the driver's door speaker.

In some cases, the vehicle will not start when the radio is removed unless this adapter is used. There are different adapters, choose the one that fits your car (onstar only, bose only, onstar and bose, neither onstar nor bose).

You will also need an antenna adapter. GM uses tiny antenna plugs that will not connect to the standard female plug on the back of an aftermarket radio.

You will need a mounting kit.

You can get the model numbers for all of these here:

To remove the radio, first crank the car and turn on the heat until the plastic bezel that surrounds the radio is warm. Cold plastic is very brittle and will snap, especially the cheap stuff they use in cars today. The bezel is attached with metal wedge clips that are sometimes difficult to remove. You need to gently pry on one side to get it started, and work your way around. The clips are 1/2" to 3/4" away from the edge of the radio. There will be about 8 or 10 of them.

This is not a difficult install, just an expensive one. We will guide you through it if you need help.

Thanks. That's ridiculous! I had read about the Bose and Onstar factory units needing a conversion, but didn't know that the basic unit needed one as well. Crazy!
