What is the model # of that amp and how do you have it wired to the sub? Also what subs have you been hooking to it? Are they dual voice coil, single, etc?

Before ruling that the amp is bad it could simply be the protection circuit coming on if it's wired incorrectly.

If it is bad, now would be a good time to get a more stable brand as Sony has issues with some of that line.

"Help Me Jesus"... He will as He brought you here and there are several solid Christians on this site.

What are the Model numbers of this amp, HU and your Alpine sub. Knowing these, we can probably walk you through the steps to figure out what's going on.

This is a common problem for newbies and we've sorted out the issues in short order. Not to worry, you have come to the right place for help. SMILE

My comp deletes posts... and it gets me really pissed... anyways.. heres what """sgthobo""" wrote...

Alpine's SWR-1242D 12
Jvc model Kd-S570
Sony XM2100 Gtx
The amp stays in green light and does not go into red light protect mode but the sub cuts out when the gain or volume are turned up. The sub is run to 2 ohms and is dual voice coil. The ground and rca and power are all fine and so are all fuses. Neve had this issue befor and have had this setup in a different car and just put it back in mine. The sub is on the amp bridged and i have also run it on a single channel but get the same results. I have used another alpine type r to test it along with a pioneer pos that i dont have ne info on and two tens which i also dont have info on. I have narrowed the problem to the amp as all of the suns including mine work on a friends amp bridge or unbridged and at 4 ohms.
im sorry the sub is a dual voice coil and is run i believe at 4 ohms. instead of running pos to pos and neg to neg on the sub itself it is run pos to neg and pos to neg using the cables supplied by alpine

The alpine SWR 1242 D is a 4 ohm DVC sub.. meaning 4ohm + 4 ohm Voice coils...

this sub can be wired in parallel for a total load of 2 ohms and in series for a net load of 8 ohms...

that sony XM-2100GTX amplifier is a # 2-channel car amplifier
# 100 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (125 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)
# 250 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)

meaning this is not a desired combo... this amp shall not be stable at 2 ohms in bridged mode.

if you wire it at 8ohms the subs gonna get only around 100wrms, thats underpowering...

you can wire each voice coil to a separate channel, but this kind of wiring has its own cons... you will have to match the gain of each channel precisely and also see that both the channel get a summed mono input from the HU.

in all it is advisable to either

1 - get a class D monoblock amp that gives around 500wrms @ 2ohms

2 - get a 4 ohm SVC or a 2ohm DVC sub. so that you can wire it for a net load of 4 ohms to the sony amp in a bridged mode.

choice one is a definite better option cause you got a solid sub there, but the amp is nowhere to match its performance...

Boom, there you go....

Good work Vic! I wondered what happen to his reply. Figured he must have gave up or solved the problem.

Finding a class D that does 500 watts rms into a 2 ohm load should be fairly easy. As I was looking for one that did 1000 into a 2 ohm, I ran across a bunch of the 500's.
