Car Audio at Home?!!?!!?

This is not for a car but rather for my computer room. The reason being is that i've listened to many 5.1 sound sytems for the pc but i'm not very impressed with sound quality of these products. So far i've got 2 6x9" speakers running on a 2 x 50watt amp. This is powered by a 9 volt 1 amp power supply. I know already that the power supply is not nearly powerful enough. What i'd like to do is add another 2 6x9" speakers and a sub. Perhaps running the 4 6x9's on a 2 input 4 channel amp? The sub could be put on the 2 x 50watt rms amp. Is this possible? Any help on this topic would be appreciated !!!

What you could do it invest in a nice home audio reciever, they can push out more watts rms then you think, mine's 50 rms to each channel I'm pretty sure. The sub goes to 150 max I think. But if you can get one with a preout for subs, then just use another amp, car amplifier if you wish to run the sub. That would make it a whole lot easier, and with true surround sound.

Sounds helpful. is there perhaps a few websites i could check for some home audio recievers? Just to get a better understanding of what specs they come with.. Thanks anyone else like to add to this???

Most home recievers run at 8 ohms though, Mine's handling 4 to every channel fine, just be sure it keeps cool and everything works great.

Yes, there is a post running now that explains this in good detail.

If you want to improve your 5.1 Computer sound capabilities, a multi channel receiver with amplifiers will be most helpful. The trick is:

1. Adequate power to all channels
2. A decent self powered sub
3. Patch cords from PC audio outs to receiver inputs
4. Decent speakers for front, rear and center channels

Most newer PC's have good sound cards that offer mini jack stereo for F&R channels. Yours may even have center channel and sub woofer outs??? If not, for sure, it will have 4 channels (2 jacks) in sound card to tap audio signals to the receiver... then fed to speakers. You can skip the center channel is you like, but a sub channel is most beneficial if you run DVD's a lot.

You can get a sub channel output from most decent receivers and if there are tape outs in the back w/ RCA's, this can be used to feed the sub amp/sub. If you elect to use a car sub amp & subs, will need a power supply to convert 120 volts AC (wall socket) power to usable DC voltage and enough current to power the sub amp sufficiently.

These power supplies are not cheap.... depending on the current needs of your amp. A modest sub amp will draw 20-50 amperes of current and need 12.0-15.0 volts input. I have seen them for under $200.00.

There are other options as well...
