New amp opinions

Hey Guys,

I found a guy selling a Kenwood KAC 8102D for 140. Currently i have a Kenwood 8101D pushing a DVC Alpine Type S 10inch sub. Should I go ahead and upgrade to the 8102D? Will it draw a lot more current? Will it be a significant difference?

This 8102D is a good price, but your present sub cannot handle all this amp can put out. (~500 watts @ 2 ohms) It's also likely your car electrical will balk at the extra current drain too, until you finish the electrical changes noted. (Big 3 and Battery upgrade)

Both the sub and amp you have now are well matched. This 8102D amp would be a little stronger, (A few dB more bass) but then a stonger sub would be the next thing to buy.

Holding off for now is a good plan. In a few months, you may need some other gear upgrades.

hmm yea..it makes sense....i just thought that because my last amp shut off on me...that it wasnt powerfull enough....but again...i think that was because of the gain or w/e settings...i just hate it when that happens....it could be embarrasing....on a first date or something...haha

Ehem... most girls are really turned off by bassheads: (I say that as we have very few females come to this site and when they do, it's not about BASS. D'oh... LOL

1. Spends to much time on his gear
2. Spends to much $$ on his rig
3. Spends to little time with her
4. Spends to little $$ on her

Are there female Bassheads? Probably... but far and few between. For many guys, it's a great opportunity to tune out the "Chatty Kathy" on your cell phone dime. ;~)

lol....believe me...i am anything but a bass head.....its just i hate it when everything is nicely balanced....and then oops....where did my bass gooo...and its just michael jackson screaming at the top of his lungs....beeaat itt....beat it..........haha

Yeah, know what ya mean. Once we have a nice dose of "High Fidelity", it's hard to lose the lows for too long.

MJ... "Beat it" is a good tune alright. Without good bass, that song is really lacking what it has to offer.

For my 10 inch Alpine Type S, dvc, in a sealed enclosure what would be a good lpf setting? i have 55, 85, or 125. Currently i have it on 55, which seems ok...?

When you get you gain set properly, try the higher crossover points. I would think with a 10, you would at least set it uo to 85. Use a familiar song and try em all and see what sounds best in your car. I keep my Alpine 12" type R around 80Hz.

Agree w/ James.

Let the single 10" sub handle the lows between say 35-85 Hz. When sealed, a single 10 has its limits. But so do the Mids you are using too. A good crossover point is determined by personal prefereces, type of music we like and the overall compliment of speakers used in a given vehicle.

There are not as many "absolutes" in the mobile audio environs as some would liketo preach. What we hear and like, are the key factors.
Basically, what sounds great to one person may sound terrible to another. A little experimentation is what we can do to get the best from what we have at any given time.

Sho nuff'....

The best setting is the one that let's both mids/hi blend well with the sub and that will depend on your tastes. We all perceive sound differently somewhat. That's what makes audio an art as well as science.

Making music is an art. Reproducing it faithfully in a mobile environment is part art, part science and a lot of common sense. Sure, we can spend a lot of money and let others do it for us.

Personally, I admire the guys who digs in deep with all hands and learn how to make things happen as they experiment with a plan and purpose. We have several guys here that are very much like that and Ash is one of them.

I'm calling him out specifically here because he has done some remarkable things on a very tight budget and shares what he has learned in the process. Kudos to you, my brother in North Florida! CLAP
