In many cases, this can be repaired by "gently" removing the dust cap, (Pry off center dome in sub cone) and resoldering the tinsil lead and coil wire back together again.

This is a very delicate procedure. It takes a lot of patience, a steady hand and a low wattage soldering pencil. Also, use 60/40 alloy, rosin core solder. A small gage soldering wire, (40/1000th's dia.) works very well. Test your sub at low power before gluing the dust cap back on the sub.

This failure is often caused by too much excursion/wattage to the woofer. Excessive bass boost or a poorly matched sub/enclosure are often the reason for this failure mode.

Good luck and be patient as you work,
Swez

I have done this many times, and really you must ask yourself, do you have more time or money? Fixing your sub yourself will probably not be a good permenant solution.

I have a sub of similar value (Boston Acoustics RS10) that has the tinsel leads come detached from terminal, voice coil, break in the middle, and throw all kind of monkey wrenches in the machine. I have had to pull off the dustcap a few times, and let me tell you, it can be a real pain.

My advise for the dustcap removal: Get a plastic card of little or no value. Don't use your drivers licence, but like a grocery club card. Try to find any gap possible in which to slide it in, and with a gentle sawing motion. This method will put enough of an "edge" in between the dustcap and the cone to seperate them, but not enough of a "blade" effect to hack your sub to bits.

Also when reattaching the dustcap, as Swez says, make sure you test the speaker at low power. After that, attach it cafefully, keeping in mind you may need to remove it later down the road.......
