How do I connect a new unit in my 2003 cav without paying 80 bucks for that stupid chime radio interface thing? What do I need to get and how do I do it???? Replies (4) swez on 09/22/2007 09:43:23 If you buy the aftermarket HU from Crutchfield, they will give you the adapter for about 50% off. Before the Metra kit came out, installers had to mount the factory HU in the trunk and still buy an adapter harness and wiring. Labor and parts were about $125.00 before this kit became available. Try e-bay? Swez cwood28 on 09/22/2007 10:24:03 Is there any other way or is this the only way to get it done. I don't really care about the stupid door chimes anyway. swez on 09/22/2007 15:11:45 Am sure guys have done this w/o the kit, but you will lose the chimes and delayed audio turnoff features though. Knowing what other features this Data Buss feature converter manages, would be most helpful too. There are warnings against not using this converter on aftermarket HU installs, but am not sure if there are any real harmful things to consider. (Loss of open door chime warning and key in IGN chimes are 2 that come to mind) But, not sure what other features this converter monitors and controls beyond that??? QUOTE: "Your vehicle is factory-equipped with an upgraded sound system. We strongly recommend that you purchase an adapter that maintains your factory door chimes (required for audible safety warnings) and provides a switched 12-volt power source for your new radio. You should not replace your factory radio without this adapter. Metra VT-GMRC-01 $79.99 You must use the recommended Crutchfield integration adapter to retain the warning system chimes. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death." That sounds ominous in one way. The main concern I would have, is if this data buss also keeps the Air Bag system on line. If this converter also enables the Air Bag deployment to work properly, the cost is justified. If this is just a case of door chimes/key in IGN, "serious injury/death" would be a huge overstatement unless one rides w/o seatbelts and does not close the doors. (If you have small children, the feature is worth the extra peace of mind) Swez cplkittle on 09/27/2007 22:40:53 It is not just a cavalier nightmare, it is a GM nightmare. I can't remember the harness number, but there is one that works without the interface. The airbag is not controlled through the factory radio, and the data bus is not broken when the radio is removed. The radio only controlls the chimes for the seatbelt, door ajar, lights, onstar voice, and key in ignition because they do not use a seperate chime module, it plays through the driver's door speaker. All other vehicles have a seperate little speaker mounted under the driver's side dash that dings for these features. quote "You must use the recommended Crutchfield integration adapter to retain the warning system chimes. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death." It is just that, 'to retain the warning system chimes'. and it is a huge overstatement. On the other hand, if you have and want to keep a Bose system factory amplifier or Onstar, you will have to have an integration module. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
