i just bought a 1000w MA audio amp. i switched my amps and hooked it all up. but my sub sounds like crap. when even the lil bass hits it goes to protection mode and i can even turn all my settings down and it stil shuts off anyone know whats wrong??? thanks Replies (10) Ash on 09/8/2007 06:26:14 Buying a cap won't help at all. Caps add only a neglible amount that's not worth paying for. Sounds like there could be a fault somewhere in the install or amp itself. First, what is the model # of both amp and sub(s) you are using. What size wire/fusing your'e running and grounding point is important as well. Let's get all that info up on here, then we can give you a thorough evaluation and possibly solve the problem. It could be something simple as a bad ground, improper ohm load presented on the amp, etc. swez on 09/8/2007 08:35:25 Ditto!!! Try disconnecting the subs and see if the amp stays on. If yes, the subs are probably miswired or a damaged coil. If the amp does not power up properly w/o subs connected, it's either a simple wiring issue or something more complex. Say more about your install and gear as Ash requested. Swez liquorbucket on 09/8/2007 21:40:10 i have a 700xe ma audio amp 1000w with a 12" cvr kicker 2 ohm. anything else?? Ash on 09/9/2007 06:48:00 Are you using single sub or a pair? I thought he stated one... Guess I misunderstood. I'm not sure about the power output on that amp as it seems it has two 25 amp fuses from looking at sonicelectronix' pics. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures.php?id=6561 Can you confirm this? If so, that should equate to about 400-500 rms bridged 4 ohm, which would be perfect for one of those subs in series, but not two. either way If you do have one, try seeing if you don't have it wired wrong (parallel) presenting a 1 ohm load. That might be what's triggering the protection circuit. http://www.crutchfield.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?imageID=1DVC%5F2%2Dohm%5Fmono swez on 09/9/2007 08:13:55 Ahhh, good catch there Ash... he did say 1 sub and the wiring wizard above is the correct choice here. The correct wiring is both coils in series, (2+2 = 4 ohms). Try disconnecting the sub from the amp and see if the amp light comes on. If yes, the amp is probably OK, but cannot take a 1 ohm load and the protect circuits were causing the amp to shut off as they should. Swez liquorbucket on 09/9/2007 23:05:25 ya i have just one sub hooked up and it has 2 25 amp fuses. it's a 2 channel amp but shows how to hook it up into a mono and hook it up to a 2 ohm sub so i did just what it showed. i disconnected my amp and it worked fine but today my amp caught fire now it's fried. but i have a little 240w amp and it has no troubles what so ever. barely gets warm and doesn't go to protection mode. could it be a grounding problem?? i have it grounded under my seatbelt bolt under my seat in a 2000 cavalier. thats the only place to put it unless i made a new place swez on 09/10/2007 11:20:25 New amp caught fire... really? Did you get a warranty from the seller to repair or replace a filed unit? Grounding off the seatbelt bolts are usually adequate and the best way to test this is with a "Continuity tester or Ohmeter". (Details if you need them) I did watch a video clip from Edesigns on how this guy installs his grounds and will see if I can locate that clip. Yeah, here we go and this is a very good and easy way to do the job. Note the 3 screws he used and how they trap the termination ring well to the bare metal section he chose: http://www.icixsound.com/iv/view_video.php?viewkey=d3e95d4a733fcfb77bd7&page=1&viewtype=&category=mv This method is effective to do inside the trunk cavity too. No real need to remove the rear seat cushion unless other wiring needs to be done. (RCA, REM and power cables are easier to hide when the rear seat is removed) Swez liquorbucket on 09/10/2007 23:42:12 yes it was a new amp and i sent my amp back today to get a new one. it actually had fire comeing through the vents. then i rolled my windows down and it just smoked and my car smells like smoke now but i will try that grounding method. i have a smaller crappier amp and it works just fine so i'm not sure what to think but it could be the grounding i'll try it when i get my amp and let you guys know. thanks. i appreciate the help. swez on 09/11/2007 07:40:07 Smells like smoke huh? Try a can of Fabreeze and hit your carpets, cloth seats, trunk and interior fabrics good. That should help neutralize the smokey stuff and freshen up the cars' smell. Sounds like you may have received a bad amp from the factory. It happens from time to time. Most amps will blow the fuses before they melt like this. When you get the replacement amp, we'll walk ya through things afresh. Swez PS If you have a digital camera and can take pics of the install and post them to photobucket.com or a similar site, that will help us spot any potential issues later. liquorbucket on 09/11/2007 23:18:46 okay that sounds good i'll make sure i don't have something screwed up or something so i don't blow another amp.
