Solo-Baric L7 S12 vs. MTX 9512

Anyone ever heard anything about the MTX 9500 series? They seem about twice as expensive as the L7's by kicker and not that much better, according to their specifications.

Just curious about the bang for the buck after 2 different guys at Circuit City suggested the MTX 9500's over the Kickers L7's.

I have heard the 9500's in action once and was VERY unimpressed. They were the 10 inchers in a spec built ported box, but the installation was very shoddy, and very poor amp and head unit choices were made, and all the wiring was junk.

So all in all, I wasn't impressed, but I have also never heard them in a well setup vehicle. I am sure with better install techniques, and amping, they could be pretty stout performers.

However, I am liking the 7500 lineup. My neighbor had a pair of these in a sealed box in his Durango, and these thangs POUND, while still maintaining great musical correctness. Suprisingly deep lows for a sealed box as well. I would reccommend these to anybody.

Would you recommend the MTX 7500's OVER then Sol-baric L7S12's? in a sealed box, of course.

Can't really say, as I have never heard an L7. I would reccommend them over an L512, but I am not too sure of the year.

Keep in mind, the 7500's are a lot less powerfull than the L7 or L5, but I would still run with the MTX.

I really like the 7500. My neighbor's ride DUMPS, and outperforms many higher powered/ more expensive stereos around here.

i agree i like the 7500's better than the 9500's but i wouldnt reccommend the L7 in a sealed box unless you have the space for a huge box

In order to compare woofers, you have to have them in the optimal installation. A great woofer in the incorrect box is not going to perform very well.

A 12" woofer designed to operate in a 1.75cuft vented enclosure will not move properly when in a 1.25cuft box sealed enclosure. Also, with installations, you have to compare apples to apples.

In either case, the 9500Series woofers are designed to provide Max SPL...so expect that they need a very well crafted enclosure AND an entire system that is well matched. The same goes for the L7.

This game is 90% installation...and with either set of woofers, you can't go wrong. If price or installation ease is the most important factor...It's the 9500 Series.

Both of them, properly installed and matched with a great audio system, will perform excellently.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can't find anywhere online to buy any of the MTX 9500 series, and the MTX website just directs me to a hard to use website.

Any links?

PS. I can get the L7 Kicker's for $170 apiece on ebay, and I know they each will fit nicely in a 1ft³ compartment, waiting till I see the price point on the MTX before I look up their specs.

Thanks in advance.

technically... if comparing a round and a square sub, and both are made by reputed manufacturers and similar specs.. a round sub will any day outperform a square sub in terms of clarity.

it is simple physics and geometry. a round shape will keep its integrity through out its circumference even in case of extreme pressure. where as the square sub will sound distorted due to pressure being distributed at particular points along its circumference.

Victor....

PS. what i just said is an on paper fact. but a good and bad installation is what makes a sub great or crap.... you can definitely use any of these and get good sound if the installation is good.

Nice points everyone thanks.

A question for you Victor;

I read that the square design of the Baric's provide more surface area of the cone. Does this not compensate for the fact that they aren't the most geometrically efficient shape?

Also, what I really need here is the best sub I can get for around $200-$250 that will handle 600wRMS that's 4+4 DVC. So tough since there are soo many subs that meet these requirements..

Victor on 07/27/2007 14:51:04
That is what i missed on saying there....

They are definitely not an ideal geometrical shape for accurate sound reproduction... but since they provide more surface area they are many SPL geeks dream subs....

Though a good SPL targeted round sub can achieve High spl's too if installed properly.. right enclosure and ample electrical juice to the amps....

For a SQ or a SQL lover... round subs are an ideal choice.. selection of sub depends on what you are aiming at...

That is a decent price range you got for a single 12" 600wrms sub....

This one would be my personal selection... ofcourse there are many many more good subs out there.. sometimes its just a matter of preference or affinity towards few brands...

This can make u a fine SQL sub... a sealed enclousure as per polksaudio specs and ample power can make this sub pound crisp and clean... or a well calculated and tuned ported enclosure...

heres the manufacturers link..

Victor...

the proted enclosure would be a 2.5cu.ft internal volume enclosure with a 2" x 14.5" long slot port or a 3" dia round port, with a depth of 8" for both the type of ports... this shall be tuned at 27.4Hz with a total system Q of 0.73

Looking for SQL Vic, and thanks for that suggestion. Will reconsider the S12L7 Baric's in-light of your stating that they're better for SPL and not SQL and also consider the Polk's, any other suggestions?

After reading the white paper on the Polks, I can see them to be a very good fit for your application. These guys have done their homework and gave enough details to see that this product has merit and substance.

This series has quality parts and very well engineered too. A simple modification to bring your custom enclosure in to optimal sealed range is all that is needed.

In the case of the 12" optimal sealed is 1.0 - 1.2 ft^3. The sub displacement on the 12" is 0.12 ft^3. If both chambers are modified to a 1.2 ft^3/chamber, you'll have a fine sounding bass engine. If it turns out the chambers are under 1.0 ft^3 after the displacements a refactored in, then using a pair of 10's can be considered instead.

In short, you have a very workable solution and worth digging in.

The more you look around the more confused u get...

Anyways am sure other members would have many more choices to give you.... just to see u take a satisfactory decision before u go out and buy one for real..

I would still personally stick to the Polk SR124D...

Victor...

Going with the sealed enclosure will give u very rich, crisp and low bass.. amazing transients and clarity.... as polk guys are more SQ lovers they have only suggested a sealed enclosure.. but if u want a few more db's then going ported wont harm either since this sub has a Qts of 0.55 it can be used in a ported enclosure too.... just some trade off's on transients....

swez on 07/28/2007 18:42:44
Agreed!!! The more options that land of the table of decision, the harder it is to get back in the game.

I think Vic has offered an excellent option in these Polk subs. They have it all:

1. Plenty of power handling
2. Works well in small sealed enclosures
3. Has the optimal ohmic rating for the amp noted
4. Almost a drop in fit to your present enclosure (minor mods)
5. Very advanced materials and above average performance at high SPL levels
6. Above average efficiency levels
7. Performs like a JL W7 sub, but at half the price

Gee, that looks like a darn good fit to me...
