Pre amp outputs

I'm looking for a new HU, I need 3 outputs, 2 for 4ch amp, 1 for sub amp
My question is : they are listed as 2, or 4 or 5 volts, if you match the output to the gain on the amp, would the 2 volt pre amp outputs make your sound louder ?

man im not sure i understand your question...the more voltage on the outputs ...the less you have to turn up your gain on the amp....at least thats the way ive always understood it.

lower voltage on the outputs sometimes means the more distortion and clipping that can happen i think but im not sure

i know that HU with higher voltage pre outs have better overall sound quality

right on kirch...simply put ....higher voltage = better overall.

Hi-Fi, I know what you are talking about since when gain control pots on amplifiers that actually show voltage settings around the knob have the voltage decreasing as you turn the gain knob "up" clockwise.

Another example when playing my Mp3 player thru the Aux jack on my Eclipse head unit, I assumed the higher I set the voltage on the "input sensitivity" the louder the I Pod would play thru the system. I set it at 1 Vrms and could barely hear it When I set it at 240 mVrms ,(milli volts I assume) the volume was comparable to the settings of the CD player. By the way my Eclipse CD 5000 says it has 8 V preouts on the unit. The specs in the manual rate it at 5 V (0dB)/55Ohms.

Thx all, for clearing this up
Yes James, my amp has voltage #'s around the pot
so my neewbie thinking was its louder @ 2 volts than at 3 volts, and if you should set the gain to match your pre-outs
voltage , then a HU w/ pre-outs @ 2 volts would be louder/ better, but now I know better

Most amps have variable gain adjustments that can accomodate a wide range of RCA voltage levels from a given HU. (0.250 - 4.0 volts is common to most newer amps)

The trick is optimimizing the amp gains to the HU voltage levels available from the HU. This is often well explained in the amp manuals.

How did your new sub/amp upgrade come out?
