This does sound like the ground of the aerial is not a good connection here. This also applies to the connecting end that plugs into your Pioneer HU.

The center pin is to the aerial and the "earth" ground is supplied by the metal jacket of the coaxial cable. In most cases, the new aerial needs to bite well into the metal where it is installed. That establishes a good ground plane for the aerial and may be the root of your problem.
Basically, the whole metal body, chassis are the ground plane. If this is not done correctly, we get poor reception.

i will clean some paint off where the aerial cable bites in and see if that helps, should there be an earth from the HU aerial plug hole to the chassis?

Yes, it's been a while since I replaced an aerial, but it has several parts.

The critical grounding point is the lock nut that fastens the aerial to the fender. The last time I did one, this locking nut is located inside the fender well and has some toothy metal tips to bite into the inner fender metal. This is the part that needs to be clean and free of rust, paint and other non-conductive debris. If we don't get a solid bite into bare metal there, the problems mentioned are often the end result.

Yes, the aerial needs a good chassis ground as does the HU chassis needs to be grounded to the chassis as well. (Firewall, floorpan or metal bracket in the HU pocket)

Also, it is best to install fresh coaxial cable when replacing the aerial. Sometimes the coaxial cable becomes contaminated and poor reception is the end result too.

Good luck,

thanks, works a charm, it was the teeth biting into paint, cleaned a bit of paint off and now she works!

cheers,
