another noobie question. i'm still searching for the right 4-channel amp. question is:-> i see an amp that is 4X100@4ohm,,bridged 2X400@4ohm.........with bridging, can i leave the front 2 channels UN-bridged @100W@4ohm,,and then BRIDGE the back 2-channels @400W @4ohm. VERY noobie question!! GRIN THINK Replies (55) baine on 08/20/2003 18:48:51 yes you can do that most of the time . Should not be a problem wolfsmane on 08/20/2003 20:42:16 thanks baine baine on 08/20/2003 21:16:48 no Problem wolfsmane on 08/20/2003 21:28:04 do you have any recomendations for a couple of different amps that i could check out? i need like 4X100rms@4ohm i've got a single cab p/up truck,,,3.5 infinity's in dash, 6.5 cdl cl61a components in doors-----soon to have two 10" DVC behind seat. thanks Swez on 08/20/2003 21:49:56 Yes, many guys do that for PU applications.... You say 100 watts per channel... RMS? Should be looking at RMS values here. An amp with 100 watts RMS x 4 @ 4 0hms depends on the speaker up front and sub(s) in back. What you mentioned should work. You can run both the front & door speakers of channels A&B, then bridge the rear channels for sub... depending on ohms load of your DVC's and power rating. Only thing... you'll have to uses Bass Blocking caps on the 3.5's. They cannot handle low bass at all !!! Something in the 250-300 Hz range will do this well. (can advise a fix later) Now, a 100 watt RMS amp (4 channel may not be cheap) Am wondering what price range you have to work with. A 2 channel for fronts may make more sense and a class D amp for sub makes much more sense. Where do you stand on these ideas? Comments? Swez wolfsmane on 08/20/2003 22:19:50 swez,,im the one you suggested the usx4085. i talked to steve@zedaudio,,,,he told me that the us acoustics and the boss brands were designed/built by his company----and that the boss was exactly the same amp as the usx. from my VERY limited knowledge of car audio,,.. everyone has said "boss" is crap. until i talked to steve, i was convinced to by the usx4085,,but if its exactly the same amp as boss,,,im not sure i'd want that.. please let me know what you think. a lil more info--i'd like to 4-chan amp the 3.5's and the 6.5s and then go with a seperate amp for the two 10's i'll be getting soon. i really appreciate your time and patience---thanks wolfsmane on 08/20/2003 22:29:03 also, i've been searching different amps,,, could you tell me what you thinks of these amps....are they over-rated or under-rated??!! quality?? lanzar viberant 438, 4 x 175 Watts RMS at 4 Ohms --2 x 700 Watts Max at 4 Ohms Bridged-$153.99 Crunch V4300,150w X 4 @ 4 Ohms--450w X 2 @ 4 Ohms bridged-$149.99 VOLFENHAG ZX7170 4 x 250 Watts MAX--$136.99 POWER ACOUSTIK FARENEIT SERIES, 4X90 2x220 bridged--$169.99 PROFILE CLARUS CL640, 75W x 4rms 225 x 2 bridged--$133.99 please feel free to give info on any other amp i could check out. again,,thanks! wolfsmane on 08/21/2003 07:36:41 of all the amps i listed above----are any better than the usx4085, in quality, clarity, & loudness??? Swez on 08/21/2003 10:31:55 Hummm, very interesting comment you made about Boss/USX amps. I did not know that connection. But I do know that many guys have been trying the USX amps and really like them for the price. Just goes to show that we often stereotype amps based on name plates and not performance. Maybe some of the Boss product line is not as bad as the rap they have been getting. As for the amps mentioned.... the Lanzar Vibrant series is not half bad. I have looked at them for others and the specs indicate a pretty good little amp for not a whole pile of money. However, this amp will draw a lot of current as the power rating is very high here. I would think something on the line of 75 watts RMS per channel would be more than adequate for your CDT Comps and have to really tone down the power/ frequency to the 3.5" dash speakers. These may not take much more than 35 watts RMS before they explode! As for sub amps, have you looked at the JBL MONOVALVE series amps? They have several versions... BP150.1, 300.1, 600.1 and 1200.1. All are 1 or 2 ohm stable, underrated power specs and very rugged design as well. Depending on the subs you choose, get the right size amp to power them. Have a look: http://www.justamps.com/Amp_Pages/JBL/jbl_power.htm There are better prices out there on these amps too. Ebay seems to be the lowest, but other sites are a bit cheaper. The 300.1 or 600.1 makes the most sense... depending on how well balanced of SQ you want. The 300.1 will net low 130's dB with a pair of good 10's. the 600.1 will give you +3 dB more bass... but draws 57 amps at full power. The 300.1 is half that and the better value unless you want very more bass SPL... but in a truck, all is very small in the cabin, so... the 300 watt RMSamp may be very adequate for your application. Comments? Swez wolfsmane on 08/21/2003 11:40:56 swez,,,thanks for the response! for a minute, i thought i done went and bugged you too much! have you seen steve's list of the amps he has for sale,, that list also has the comment about the boss+usacoustics comment. i've still got it, if you want me to send it to you. back to the topic,,i THINK im am going to go with the usx 4085 that you initially suggested. as far as the two 10's behind the seat. i think you have me talked into the jbl amp. i want either the 1200.1 or maybe 600.1. i would rather waste the money on having too big an amp than wishing i had a bigger one. also, better to go big in case i decide to get better quality subs. i plan on getting "2"-DVC of whatever good brand will fit behind the seats. wolfsmane on 08/21/2003 12:29:43 hey swez, what state do you live? just curious Swez on 08/21/2003 14:58:01 I live in Michigan, about 30 miles west of Detroit. One thing you need to understand about larger amplifiers... they need a lot of current to operate them. Since voltage for a car is fixed at ~13.5 volts, amps for car use draw on current to make the power they put out. The USX-4085 will draw close to 50 amps at full power. The JBL 1200.1 will draw an additional 114 amps at full power. Sure, you will rarely go that hard on either amp, but when you begin to push them, combined current draw may exceed 100 amperes. It takes a large ALT/BAT to handle that kind of juice without coughing it up. In short, be aware if you go with both these amps, YOU WILL NEED SOME ELECTRICAL UPGRADES TO HANDLE THIS SYSTEM. Oh, not bugged by the questions at all... I enjoy teaching students who listen, learn and apply. Swez wolfsmane on 08/21/2003 15:46:31 thanks swez, you've already taught me about the alt/battery upgrade. i've had my alt rebuilt to put out 165amps( shop said at 14.4v ),,and i am going to buy a new better battery. do i need the optima gel,,,or will a large CCA lead cell work? this is 1 of 3 vehicles i have,,so im taking my time trying to do it right--the first time. wolfsmane on 08/22/2003 22:10:14 <*bump*> Swez on 08/23/2003 06:37:33 Glad you bumped it... never saw it yesterday. OK on the ALT! About batteries, gel cells are fine, but Optima is pretty expensive. A regular lead/acid battery is fine, as long as it has a high CCA rating of 850 or more, should be good enough. About Steve at Zed... yes, I'd like to look at his inventory listings just for fun and compare. Got a web link? Have you come up with any thoughts on subs yet? If you go with the 600.1 (which is plenty of power) easy to find 10's that can take 300 RMS each. However, if you shoot for the 1200.1 amp, this will be a bit more of a challenge to find a pair a 10's that can take 600 + RMS each. There are some out there.. but the price tag goes up fast for high power handling subs. Are you looking mostly SQ, but can play prett high SPL as well? or mostly SPL subs? Get your dimensional stats together as you can, so we can figure out what size enclosure you can use in this vehical for subs and amp installs So, where do you live? wolfsmane on 08/23/2003 16:14:33 hey swez. im in s.carolina. as far as web link,,sorry he emailed me the list. will be happy to send to you. he has a planet audio P450--4X50 @ 4ohm rms,,also 2 boss amps, a REV1055,,and a REV1200--both about 4X90 @ 4ohm RMS. these are just 3 that i choose from a long list he has. i think i'll probably be ordering those from him monday morning. let me know where to send the list. ok, now, subs are gonna be a few weeks away. the size behind my seat is this: it is gonna be a pyramid,,wedge shape box. at the bottom--from the bottom of the seat to the back of the cab is--> 6" height--> 14" width at the top of box is 3",,,,, and overall length of the box from door to door is 57". now, if these are too small for a suitable set of subs,,,,,we can move the seat up just a lil bit( i have long legs). that would change the 6" depth to 7-8" depth,,,,and if we did that, then the height could go to 15",,and the width at top would change to about 4"depth. i found a local shop that will build the box for me for $75. i want mostly SQ,, but can play prett high SPL as well. im not peticular about brand---i want 2--10" qualitysubs with DVC, so i can drop to 1 or 2 ohm. throw some different subs at me to consider. hey swez,,do you install for a living? thanks Swez on 08/23/2003 17:36:44 Hummm, that sounds very interesting.. the dual wedge idea, back to back makes a lot of sense and allows adequate surface area for a 10" subs to fire into the cabin, have an adequate base to remain stable and plenty of height too. If you have 8" in depth, most woofers are under 7" deep, some are ultra slim too... under 5" D. Am wondering if we can fit a shorter box here... sealed to give best over all SQ and minimal foot print of the box. A good sealed box for a strong 10" would be 0.75 - 1.0 cf internal per sub chamber. You want separate air space for each sub! Have you figured out which amp you want to use yet? We talked about the JBL 1200.1, 600.1 and Kicker 600.1 so far. My recommendation is the 600.1 from JBL for many reasons. Very good SQ and plenty of SPL in the small space you have in your cabin. JAT: Do you use the passenger side seat much? If not, can you see moving it up close to the dash and installing the box on passenger side and amp rack behind your seat on floor or back wall? Comments? Installer... don't do many installs any more. I am 6'3", 225 lbs and climbing around under the dash like a contortionaist is not my idea of fun any more. Do my own and help a buddy now and then... but that's the extent of it. Much of my background is in Pro Audio gear and fabrication. I am a self-employed carpenter/handyman for now. Have been a Sales Engineer & Regional Sales Manager for the Microelectronics Industry and components for >15 years. But with the economy being what it is, was downsized and now waiting for an economic rebound or just become a self employed Consultant /Sales in some other field later. Swez PS This is just one of many of my hobbies and interests. I like teaching others to be successful and how to make good choices as they go/grow. That's why we are called Audio Evangelists!!! wolfsmane on 08/23/2003 21:23:28 jbl would be my choice for sub amp. if 1200.1 is too much overkill, then it will be the 600.1. 82 model truck is a bench seat, not split. i am going to talk with the local shop, give him the dimensions, and see if we can come up with. they have a truck box in shop that almost fits. they told me that it would be between 1.0-1.25 cf for each chamber. you say sealed will give a better SQ?? i always hear preaching here that ported is the best way to go. you have any suggestions on good DVC 10" subs? i understand the contortionist thing...im 40 y.o. 6'3" 250 lbs AND i have had lower back sugery. real fun. lol i got hooked on car audio way back in the day when the only amplifier you could get for a car was "power booster" at an amazing over-rated power of 40 watts!! we get a couple of speaker towers from our home stereo and put in the back seat!! boomin! im a machine tech for bridgestone, making tires for a living. comments?? Swez on 08/24/2003 16:32:09 Yes, the 600.1 is plenty ... trust me. I too am 47, and sore back issues are common for me these days due to an accident on a motorcycle 25 years ago. So, I do have to watch what I get into... I may not get out! Will come back with a few suggestions on 10's on Monday as I am heading out for a picnic shortly... That 1.0 cf/per sub is plenty for a sealed 10. with a 1.2 cf/each, you could go ported.... a bit more low end bass this way. Depends on the music you like best. Swez wolfsmane on 08/25/2003 00:10:15 hey swez, how'd the picnic go? i'm try'n to do the motorcycle thing now,,been looking for the right one to buy! lol the music i like best and listen to most often is rock/hard rock, some metal=90% some rap about 5% some country about 5% hope you have a good one! jon Swez on 08/25/2003 00:04:52 I like the Infinity Kappa Perfects for over all performance and good balance between SQ & SPL. You can go with SVC 4 ohm 10's in parallel for a 2 ohm load and this is fine for the JBL 600.1 amp. Link: http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/Infinity/infinity_KappaPerfect.htm Or the Perfect DVC's which give you a 1 ohm load. The amp puts out the same RMS at 1 or 2 ohm loads. Link: http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/Infinity/infinity_KappaPerfectDVC.htm $117.00 each on sale The mounting depth required here is 6" for the Perfect 10's, 6.5" for the DVC Perfect 10's. Also, if sealed, can use 0.66 - 0.75 cf/ sub. If you go ported, looking at 1.0 cf internal per sub. If you want other ideas, just ask. Swez wolfsmane on 08/25/2003 04:55:13 with the perfect 10's rated at 700 rms & 1400 peak, wouldn't they perform better with the 1200.1. it seems like the 600.1 wouldn't allow the perfects to perform to the best of their ability? other ideas is always better,,i can make a more informed decision. lol :) Swez on 08/25/2003 09:20:57 Alpine type R's are very good SQ/SPL subs too. They come in 2 and 4 ohm DVC models. Very similar in performance to Infinity products noted. You may have to shop this one bit harder to get the price down,\. Crutch offers great service and bennies, but you will pay more unless they run a special promo. Again, ebay search may net a better deal here. Look here: http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-leXifGUGC8Y/ProdView.asp?s=0&cc=01&c=10&g=67600&I=500SWR1021 Or here: http://www.savinglots.com/lotprod.asp?item=SWR1041D Or here: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_46.html Also, MA Audio has a nice sub for your applcation as well. May be harder to find them.. maybe ebay... but you can see the product and review the specs on this 2/4/8 DVC sub... 300 RMS/sub in 10" version. Look here: http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/MA_Audio/MA_Audio_MXI.htm All theses mentioned wil do the job. Are all high end SQ but have very good SPL power handling of 300 RMS. All are DVC subs. Comments? Swez wolfsmane on 08/25/2003 21:36:12 hiya swez. how'd the ole pinic go? thanks for all the footwork on these subs. i have a few local shops that sell these subs,,,the alpine , infinity, and the MA's. i'll have to do some shopping this week. i'll let you know what i find. Swez on 08/26/2003 08:34:53 The picnic was wonderful... I BBQ'd, she made a salad, we had a nice walk afterwards and just enjoyed the cool night breeze and just kicked back and relaxed... Just what I needed this weekend, after a long week of work activity. About the subs, have a look at the mentioned products and see what makes the most sense in your application. Just make sure that whatever subs you choose, that you can fit them and the box, into the space you have available. Swez wolfsmane on 08/26/2003 08:53:21 sounds like an awesome time! ummm,,,,cool night breeze....whats that? its so hot down here, the rain evaporates as soon as it hits the ground! cools off to the mid 70s :( the shop that i told you about that will build the sub box for me had one that was almost the exact size i need,,,,the owner was showing me the alpine type r's and the kicker l7's (i think?) but he put those subs in the box to show me they fit. im crossin my fingers,,and i'll probably get to check it out better tommorow. i also gotta squeeze a little time in there to motorcycle shop :) i'll get back to ya Swez on 08/26/2003 13:12:26 Sounds good... I love motorcycles... even though I was almost extinguished by a bad crash in 1978. Still lovethe feel of aceeleration and the freedome of the open roads ahead. I thing the Alpine will be a better choice for SQ as Kicker is designed more for SPL and to get better SQ, much larger box is needed. Tell me how you see the pair when you demo same. I would pick MA Audio and Alpine ober Kicker, if SQ/SPL were my goal. Swez wolfsmane on 08/26/2003 20:48:08 hey swez, the MA audio--the one you show is like the bottom of the line,,correct? is it better than there upper models for what i need? the upper models seem to have larger surrounds and larger magnets,,,,if the one you showed me will handle the 600.1 and sound better playing rock music,,,then thats what i'll check out + it's much cheaper! :) my local shop has those for like $89 a piece--but i can talk them down. they also have the upper model for like $109, both in stock. how does the MA compare to the infinity and the alpine type r? thanks Swez on 08/26/2003 22:06:05 All subs mentioned are in the better than average SQ game. The SPL is not bad on all 3 subs mentioned and the right enclosure is the key to what ever subs you choose. If you are on a tight budget, the MA Audio is a good choice. If you want more reserve power for your subs... then Infinity is your best bet. Alpine is in the middle. Ranking: Top Choice: Infinity Kappa Perfects 12 (SVC/DVC) #2 choice Alpine Type R Budget Choice: MA Audio Other: Infinity Reference 1220W (best budget buy) http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/Infinity/infinity_Reference.htm $119.99/pr. (300 watts RMS, SVC, 4 ohm) Now, that should give a good spread on the plan. Pick the one that appeals most to you needs and budget. Swez wolfsmane on 08/28/2003 11:41:05 hey swez, i did a lil shopping yesterday, went searching for a honda vtx1800,,ended up at the local harley davidson dealer, damn near walked out with a 2003 fatboy,,,,,,,,,,errr, wait, we're suppose to be talk about subs, right? ok, since i was originally planning on waiting a few months before i actually bought and installed subs,,,,i decided to get them sooner, but i'm gonna have to hold off on the kappa perfects. maybe those a little later down the road. i can get the ma's about a $190 a pair locally. i can get the alpine type r online about $200 a pair @ sonicelectronix.com i can get the infinity kappa's (not perfects) $175 a pair @ justwoofers.com let me know what you think about these......or any other suggestions? have a good day! Swez on 08/28/2003 12:14:59 I would own a pair of Kappa subs.... and the MA Audio would be a close 2nd. If you think you want to buy better subs later and just get something pretty decent for less $$, the go dor the Infinity Reference line at www.justwoofers.com The package deal price is very low and they will take 300 RMS each too... about 120.00 a pair as I recall. Swez wolfsmane on 08/28/2003 12:35:24 thanks swez, i will have to give that some thought. another question for you............ i have the cdt's cl61a's components,, i am currently build a kickpanel for them( actually the panel will be located at the bottom of door panel) first, does the components need to be in a sealed enclosure, or do them need to breathe? 2nd, should i put polyfill in? and last, the tweeter mounting location...close to the 6.5 or up high on the door panel? oh yeah, i keep forgetting........ ZEDAUDIO@aol.com thats steves email addy,, just send him a note asking for the amps that he has for sale Swez on 08/28/2003 16:09:53 Thanks for the link to Zed.... The CDT's can be used free air or sealed. Most car door applications are primarily "fee air" meaning no real enclosure. To get true sealed performance from them, would need something on the order of 0.25-0.3 cf enclosure. This is what most kicks permit. There may be some leakage of rear cone waves in non-flush mount kicks, but a little poly would not hurt at all to dampen the rear cone waves. Depends on how low you set the amp crossovers for these speakers. On tweeter mounting, it's an open field... most OEM car COMPS have the tweeters mounted about belly to chest height. Some like the A-Pillar mounts (mirror mounts too) while others use them in the dash. Whatever sounds best in your vehicle is up to you. A little experimentation is always a good idea, if you want the sound more customized to your vehicle and preferences. I generally recommend using 2 sided tape for temporary experimentation. Once you have te location you like best... then make it a permanent mount. Comments? Swez wolfsmane on 08/31/2003 09:10:04 hey swez, hows your weekend been going? i've been busy working all weekend, and probably all next week too. it'll be another week or so before i can do anything about getting the subs and box. still waiting on those amps from steve to arrive,,ups is so slow...its taking them more than a week to deliver from california to here(s.c.) oh well! i'll holla at you later jon Swez on 08/31/2003 09:27:53 Hey Jon, Yeah, UPS is slower when they use ground method. Figure 3-5 days shipping from West to East coast is normal. Lots of logistics and package shuffling along the way to get fromthere to you. My weekend is actually very relaxed... not working this weekend and hanging with with a lady friend most of this weekend. She is a realtor, so her hours are pretty screwy. Whenever a client says jump, she has to do the hoops to satisfy the demands. But she is off this weekend, so we are trying fit in as much play time as we can get in. Well, try to get some down time if you can and enjoy the family stuff etc. The last major holiday til Thanksgiving and summer in the Midwest is slippiing away fast after mid-September. Am sure Sc has warm weather well into October huh? Not here.... we have seen snow and sleet in October and the further north you go, the temps drop fast after September 15th. Enjoy you long weekend! Swez (Dave) wolfsmane on 09/3/2003 21:31:04 hey swez, hows your week going? i haven't forgot about ya, just been busy working. i haven't had any free time to do anything on the system. and yes, im still waiting on slow ups for my amps! have a good one! jon Swez on 09/3/2003 21:45:00 Hi Jon, Nice weekend... weather was wet, but made the bast of it with a lady friend of mine. We BBQ'd a few times, went downtown (Detroit) for a free Jazz concert... 3 stages etc but the rain put a damper on my interests for jazz so we went to a Greek restaurant for dinner instead. It was so funny... my friend had a coupon (2/4/1) deal and we took 2 hours to find the place and it was closed for long weekend.... tried 3 other restaurant hunts and found them all... but they too were closed. I wanted to kill the co-pilot after 2.5 hrs of driving around, no mapsand HUNGRY.... (you know how guys get when they are hungry right?) Well, we finally got lucky and found that Greektown was open and had dinner there... nice food... full tummy... HAPPY Ya know, it is really hard to find a lady we can really enjoy at my age. I must be too used to my freedom to get too involved with some women. I'd like her to be smart, kind hearted, relaxed and easy going, have a decent job she enjoys and we share many common interests.... thing is... all women have mouths and they like to talk 3 times more than men. Oh yeah, she needds to have a nice shape too... no BIG gals for me LOL That's my weekend... and you? Dave wolfsmane on 09/4/2003 00:02:28 sounds like an adventurous weekend!! and yes,, i KNOW hungry!! LOL you act like your an old man,,,whats up?? hard to find a lady at your age??!! what!?,, No big gals?!?! c'mon now,,,big gals need lovin too! me no like the big ones nether. me,,,well,,i only had monday off!! wooo hoooo!!! i hung around the house with the family Swez on 09/4/2003 06:57:45 LOL... so you don't prefer big gals either huh... not for me! Call me shallow in that respect... but no thank you! Am getting older... a few more years than you... but still have lots of adventure but prefer a quiter life these days. I have been through many deep waters in the past few years and it has knocked the wind out of my sails a bit. Time for a fresh start in many ares of my life now! Anyway, am contimplating a vacation trip to your fair state at the end of this month. We are targeting Murtle Beach, Charleston and maybe Savanna, GA as we travel. What are the typical weather patterns in that area in late Sept? My friend wants to do the beach, swimming, sun and such. I love golf, but don't enjoy playing alone or paying high greens fees either. (+$50.00) What are some of the neat sites to see and things to do in that area? Swez wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 07:50:51 hey swez, seems likes its been forever since we talked! i haven't been ignoring your questions, just wrapped up at work! about your vacation plans: FIRST look at the weather channel before you decide when to come. this time of the year is PRIME HURRICANE season! your plans can be changed by the change of direction from a good storm! about myrtle beach: this place is set up just for tourists. it is not bad though, nice beaches, plenty,,ummmm,,,,PLENTY of shopping for the lady friends!! it has the normal kinda tourist attractions. it has a small( half-mile i think) nascar sponsored race track, and also has some good golfing, and of course some good resturaunts! -->can ya say seafood!,,,mmmmm! charleston: i love it! i spent my younger years growing up there. very old city, plenty of civil war era sites to visit. downtown charleston, has what is known as the "market", used to be the old slave trading market, know has plenty of shops in it. same area has TONS of other good stores and some really good resturaunts! the charleston "area" has good beaches, has plenty of shopping, has a few good golf courses, it has several of the old "southern plantations" that you can tour the gardens ( good again for the lady friends, although this time of year is not the best time to go there) charleston also has the "Hunley",, first submarmine to be used in usa history,,they found it sunk a few years ago and excavated it,,,and now have it in the museum downtown. savannah: i am not as familiar with it as the other two, but basically, it is very similar to charleston. another choice for you to consider is hilton head, s.c. its between charleston and savannah VERY golf oriented there, also has the normal tourist stuff,,, shopping, resturaunts,,etc. let me know what other type of things you like to do and i'll try to give more suggestions. also, each of those cities have online sites you can visit,,just search on google. let me know when you figure out which dates you'll be travelling,,,also, if your flying down, here lately i've been making alot of online travel plans with sites like orbitz, cheaptickets, etc.... and i've found priceline.com to beat the pants off the rest everytime!! just a thought. my email is jfk1_1@excite.com i can be reached there quicker. jon wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 07:56:16 i hope walt don't get upset with looong off topic post! :) wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 07:57:07 btw----i finallt got my amps from steve! all i can say is---DEAR GOD!! i didn't realize that the 2 boss amp were going to be soooo big! MONSTERS,,,,BEASTS!!! now my new problem will be trying to figure out where to mount them. did i say they were huge?? lol i also got the planet audio, i'll probably have to go with that one ( its smaller size), and give the other two to the teenage boys for christmas for there cars! question...the jbl 600.1.....what kind of physical size will i be looking at? as far as hurricane season, its getting us now,,,,i'm off this weekend,,,and was planning on installing new amps,,,,and now, nothing but rain! lol figures! i need a garage...... wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 08:04:32 as far as bike hunting,,,,i'll probably be getting the honda vtx1800 this coming friday. it will make installing the rest of my system VERY difficult,,as i'll want to be riding instead of installing!!!! Swez on 09/7/2003 11:21:43 Hey, you're back on the board and I am HAPPY! The JBL 600 is a prett coompact amp as they use the whole casing as a heat sink. The dimensions are in a .pdf file on their web site. "Owner's Manual". Here's the link: http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/CAR/Owner%27s%20Manual/bp_om.pdf As for the vacation plans... I am aware of the Hurricane Season thing and it may be moot for now. I may have to change plans on the trip as my new destination may be Forida. My parents will going down in November to get out of the cold weather here in MI. So I may go with them for a time. that would be a wonder break from the Winter bite here. Golf.. yes, I have played several courses in the Murtle Beech area. These are very different from the layouts we have in most Midwest courses. I rarely encountered the long fairway sand bunkers common to all the courses I played in MB. A 200 yeard long sand trap was just not possible in the Midwest, unless the course was near one of the Great Lakes. Took a while to get the hang of playing these bunkers (hit the a tad thin with a lofted wood or md-irons) did the trick and I snatched pars out of certain boogies after some experimenting. Do you play golf? Anyway, good to see you back on the board. Hope all is well and yes.... get a garage if you want to do car audio. A few well placed fans will help alot... LOL. Swez wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 11:58:45 lol,,,no, i don't play golf. :) that don't hurt your back? no chance for a garage anytime soon. the way my work schedule works i may be on here for several days,,,then off here for more than a week. wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 12:03:59 can be reached sooner at the email address a few blocks above Swez on 09/7/2003 12:22:49 Got it... check you mail and NOPE.... no back pain if my swing plane is right in the groove zone... more like knee prolems from a motorcycle crash 25 years ago... Was very severe and I will have issues related to that, the rest of my life. That comment is not meant to scare you out of a bike.... just be aware of the potential consequences. Bikes are no match for cars, trucks, SUV's and fixed objects. We are hapless riders w/o protection from impact. I am living proof of that physics equation of mass x velosity = impact force = a big hurt Thank God I survived as the Doctors did not have much hope of me lasting 72 hours. But... I'm still here and kicking butt when I can. Swez wolfsmane on 09/7/2003 14:21:35 geez!!,,,,,, make me think twice! done had me a lower back operation,,,,don't need more! Swez on 09/8/2003 08:04:27 10-4 on that one good buddy! Stay away from golf then and try to keep your weight close to 220 if possible. If you can tighten up your abs... will take some of the strain off your lower back too. For every 10 lbs of "spare tire" in the belly, it nets ~100 lbs of extra pressure on the lower back. Also, avoid sitting a lot as this is the worst position for low back strain. I get it too... when I really push my self hard or sitting for long periods like long road trips, computer work... etc. I'm 6'3", 225 now and need to drop about 15 lbs too.... too much sitting and not enough aerobic work to burn off my extra few lbs. But as I am getting older, is getting harder to keep these unwanted lbs off. When I walk and play golf a few times a week... that keeps the weight down well.... but have not played much the past few years.... doing more bike riding now though... that is a good workout! Swez PS I still love riding a motorcycle too... but in high congestion city traffic.... gotta have eyes all over your body and be prepared for the unexpected. It takes much of the joy out of riding, being so aware of others.... hit the country back roads more and by all means... take several advanced riding courses to know how to jam your bike hard to avoid other vehicles. These were not available when I started riding.... (mid- 70's) but if I had that training, I may have been more skilled at getting out of the way and avoiding the crash. She turned left in front of me while I was going ~40 MPH. I had less then 100 yards of reaction space and it was a green light intersection... She said she thought I was farther away and she thought she had plenty of time to turn. The bike hit her car right at the front passenger door/windshield area.... Obviously, she did not judge my distance and speed well at all..... I flew off the bike and landed some 60 feet past her car... very busted up when I hit the pavement! The bike hit so hard, the motor mount brackets all broke. Enough.... just be careful as he!! if you do go for a motorcycle eh mate? wolfsmane on 09/8/2003 09:44:29 i hear your concerns!!! and i appreciate them,,,thanks! jon Swez on 09/8/2003 11:42:46 Just trying to give you the upside and down side of motorcyles... As I say... I love riding them and have been on them since the crash... but as i get older, the risk factors are less attractive VS the payoff. Not telling you how to run your life... (you know that right?) Just giving you the gory details of my mishap.... It changed my life forever in a few milli-seconds... not to mention 1 year of lost work while I recouped. Swez wolfsmane on 09/8/2003 12:06:23 i really do apprecuate your advice. everyone of those thoughts have been running through my head for many years now as i have pondered buying a bike. for over three years now, i have been searching, going to the dealerships and such, only to chicken out when the time came to sign the dotted line. i'm getting old, and don't want to regret not trying at least. i will probably be getting one this friday when i get off work,,,,,..........................IF i don't chicken out! lol jon Swez on 09/8/2003 14:38:05 Well... if you do get one... take some riding courses. They teach how to really manuver your bike and what it will do as you hammer the brakes, lay it down or make a major swerve manuver... The program most Police take would be a great course! Advanced riding skills are an essential if you go that route. Swez wolfsmane on 09/30/2003 21:08:03 swez!! my man,,,,,,how ya been doin? it seems like forever since i chatted with ya. i have made NO progress on the install in my truck. im still trying to find a place to get a smaller overdrive pulley for my alternator. so until then,, it'll have to sit and wait.....i don't want to harm to system by underpowering it. i've been real busy learning how to ride the motorcycle,,,what a beast!! its definately a handful! how's life in swez-ville? Swez on 09/30/2003 21:15:11 Hi Jon, life is good... see that you all hd a nice hurricane hit the coast last week. Am so glad I did not make that vacation plan with my friend... in fact I broke things off with her as basically... we just can't seem to get along for more than a few hours without some kind of conflict... Geez Louise, reminds me of my ex wife.... Out ya go baby! Just installed a CD changer in my parents' new Lincoln. Went pretty smooth in all. Ford/Lincon's are so easy to take apart and so on. The hardest part was installing the conversion harness behind the stock HU. Huge bundle of wires and connectors were tuff to stuff into the dash, then get the radio back in as well. Anyway... you going to take some advanced riding classes this year for your new bike? I hope you do... wish I had that skill when I got my bike way back when. My buddies have done the courses after i pushed them a bit... but they are very competent riders now and thanked me for pushing them into the deal.... not accidents from any of them either. (a few close calls) but the training kept them from trouble. Finally, that pully you need... wonder if you can order something like this from JC Whitney? Big auto parts and custom shop out of Chicago. Have a look here: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&TID=8010965&catalogId=10101&langId=-1 Let me know if you find anything useful there.
