my friend has this 2000 chevy cavalier that she wants me to install a new hu but she said that her car has a security system that has to have a chip install with the aftermarket hu or it will not turn on
is this true? if it is can i bypass it or do i have to have that chip?

is she talking about the chime that plays through the speakers???
you will probably have to buy the interface thats made for this car (similar to a wiring harness)
wait for one of the pro installers to see this they can offer better advice

I do recall a few installers mentioning the need to relocate the Factory HU to the rear of the vehicle and splice in an aftermarket HU at the dash. Not sure if that applies to this vehicle or not.

According to Crutchfield, you'll need a factory Integration kit to keep the chimes and other audible devices. However, if this car has Onstar, this adapter will not work.

according to what she said it a security system directly wired to the hu that with out the hu attached to the vehicle it cars computer doesn't allow the engine to kick over
that adapter/intergration kit was only for late model gm car

That often means remounting the OEM HU into the trunk and adding and Aftermarket HU in the dash. The data buss link is part of this issue and I hope a Pro Installer will add their comments to your dilemma.
This is a major P.I.T.A. for installers, but there are ways to conter this measure. (Help from the Pro Installer Tech pls.)
