FROWN okay, I have an '88 jeep cherokee and I just tried to put in a new cd player(jensen Phase Linear cd player). The one I took out had an one piece pigtail and was completely messed up. Jerry-rigged.... I've tried to undo the mess and hook up the other one. All the wires are hooked up, but still no sound.... Anyone with ideas????

Did you use a new Factory to Aftermarket pigtail for this one? This little gem is very helpful and easy to install if the factory wire harness has not been altered or cut off.

To check polarity of your speakers, his comments say it does not matter. Well, it does... The 9 volt battery will come in handy here and a buddy to look at each cone as you connect/disconnect the battery. When the cone pushes outward , the wire on the + side of the battery is your + terminal to the speaker.
If the cone pulls in when tested, the wires are reverse polarity to the battery.
