Ever notice someone with a system passing by...and its nice deep clean sounding bass, and as soon as they pass by, all you hear is an annoying rattle or the bass cuts out completley. I've noticed this many times. I always wondered why many systems did that. I've thought maybe because there not coming toward you anymore their going away from you,but Im not sure why that happens..I havn't yet purchased a system for my ride yet, and probably won't untill I find out the reason this happens. When I purchase my stereo I would wish my bass is just all pure leaving as it is coming. If I could get information on what I been talking about I would greatly appreciate it.

Every automobile has a resonant frequency within the cab. All the materials within the cab and on the body of the car itself also have individual resonant frequencies that cause them vibrate.

What your describing is common amongst people who do not sound deaden their car. Sound deadening is when material is applied to increase the resonant frequency of a given object. This adds mass to the object that in turn makes it more solid and harder to vibrate enough to cause a rattling sound. Common areas for a car to rattle are the mirrors, gas cap, liscence plate and the trunk. Each specific area has something you can do to help eliminate this problem but isn't exactly cheap or easy, hence why your average "banger" is going to have the rattles.

The reason you hear the clean bass from a distance is because the higher frequencies have a shorter wave length so the sound doesnt travel as far. Subwoofers play sub sonic frequencies (20-200hz generally) and the wave length for these frequencies are longer, causing them to travel distance and still be heard. As a car as driving you can hear the subsonic waves due before the higher frequencies (and rattles) for this reason.

Also, this site is PG. So please refrain from any abbreviations for, or typing any foul language.

I am sure he meant to say .... "Whew That Fart" was nasty?

Yes, we are a PG rated site. Please refrain from colorful language, pejorative comments, acronyms and acrostics. We can communicate just fine w/o them.

Our Moderators are pretty strict on this issue and for a good reason. We don't wish to be like a lot of other "garbage can" forums and after you have been here a while, you'll see why.
