Upgrade?

Hey guys just a quick question for you?

I am looking to try a new sub in place of my 12" Alpine SWR-1241D. I found a good deal on a 10" Phoenix Gold Titanium Ti10 dual 4ohm. I am using a JL e1400D amp and will be using the new sub in a sealed box in a hatch back.

Has anybody had any experience with this line of subs and how are the SQL wise?

Thanks,
Jay

both of these are nice for the money....i know the type r can get very loud if set up right...ive heard a few good things about the pg sub as well.

I have no info on the Pheonix sub but have a question on your 12" type R: Is your amp rated at 500 watts at 2 Ohms? I assume that you have the sub parallel wired for a 2 Ohm net load. Do you find that you need the gained dialed up a lot to get the amount of thump you want, or are you not getting the amount of thump you want?

The reason I ask is that I have the type R at 2 Ohm on an RF 600.1bd amp. When I set the gain at the proper voltage for 500 Watts, my sub isnt hitting very hard. All I have to do is dial it up a touch more and it slams pretty good. If you have any over half a volt power drop from Bat+ to your amp or the gain isnt allowing full power development, ie, 500 watts..the R may not do too great.

Disclaimer. Im new at this and only have this one setup as a guidline, but I have to crank my gain up to about 80% of the total travel of the gain knob for my sub to sound right at a no boost, flat setting.

man james ...that doesnt seem right....do you have a sub control on the deck?/ if so where is it set at?...if no sub control then is it from the rear outputs on the deck?? if so then check the fade on the deck....that sub should get pretty loud...

Eclipse deck with 8v preouts, really 5v @ 55 Ohms, but , 3 pairs and the sub is on the non fader...It sounds great It just seems a bit power hungry for a 500 watt RMS sub.I have the boost switch on the dash and the whole 9 yards. Im just saying with all settings flat, no boost or cut, PEQ set flat down low(not the way I usually have it) but at these settings this sub wants some power to pound. It is in a sealed box, heavily, damped with batting and shimmed down to about .78 ft³

This is my first "real" sub car wise and I dont have much reference but when you give it what it wants it really works great. It gets very loud if you want it to.

I thinkGRIN my point is, it is probably not a good sub choice if it is to be underpowered at all.

yea i had 2 of these and they pound at about 500rms...they do really well ported.....seems to me that a sub like this should be ported to get supreme movement...just depends what your taste is ...although it seems as if you want serious sound....and if my bazooka el1500 powers it well then your rf should do the job......

That PG sub is an oldie but goody. It's rated for about 450 Wrms. It's recommended for compact sealed or ported sub enclosures.

It comes in a 4 ohm SVC and 4+4 DVC models. The sensitivity on this model is 89dB @ 1w/1m. That's notably better than the Alpine Type R.

What is the rated output wattage of your JL E series amp? (~500 Wrms @ 2 ohms is my guess)

Trunkisloud. my amp powers the R sub great, ...the JL amp that LC1 is using is rated at 400 watts at 2 Ohms.It probably puts out more than that but If there is any power loss due to wire size, connections, whatever and it isnt making full power it may be the reason he wants to change to a higher sensitivity sub.

If I dial my gain down to around 28 V, or about 400 W at 2 Ohms my sub doesnt hit as hard as I want it to. No problem though because I just set it at around 33 volts using a 60 Hz test tone and hits hard, clean and tight..I love it. I do want to try a ported box but havent built it yet. I feel that more than likely, I will change it back to the sealed box but wont know till I try it.

Hey guys thanks for the input. However I am not looking for more bass, the sub performs great! I am looking to downsize to a 10" sub to save space in my hatch. i am constantly putting my golf clubs, mountain bike etc back there.

My amp is rated at 400wrms @ 12v and 500wrms @ 14.4 (at 2ohms of course).

Right... I kinda gathered that when you mentioned the 12" SWR sub and now looking at a PG 10". This PG sub will do nice in a compact enclosure. (0.5 ft^3 sealed, 1.0 ft^3 ported) With this JL amp, use the DVC version. (4+4 DVC in parallel) That nets 2 ohms and a perfect match for your JL amp.

That should free up some cargo space for your other toys and such.
