Once again, good old morons at Pimp my Ride manage to take a complete piece of crap, and almost make it more worthless than it was to begin with. This time they pimped an old Grumman Kurbmaster truck purchased by the owner from Wonder Bread. At first I thought they were gonna throw it down sick, as the paint looked way sexy, and even though I wouldn't touch a skateboard, the quarterpipe in the back was a cool touch. But then they started working on the audio and really botched this one. I believe 16 MTX 6.5 COAXIALS!!! were used for the SQ engine, and two of the MTX Jackhammers were used. At the begginning of a comercial break, they said they were going to build the "loudest stereo in the world." Final Dbs after the SPL test, less than 140Db. This setup was hella strugglin to hit the upper 130's too. Pathetic. And I can only imagine how ugly the top end sounded with 16 coax's poorly placed, with phase cancellations running rampant. Probably the biggest waste of audio equipment ever. Have these guys ever heard of component speakers? Also, when showing video of the Jackhammers in action, it looked like one was out of phase, as they seemed to be moving in opposite directions. I know the hand is quicker than the eye, and the sub quicker than the hand, but this seriously looked out of phase. I would be more than wiling to place a freindly little bet with our boy X to the Z Xzibit that just about any of our advanced readers could take a single 1000 RMS 12" and embarrass the living hell of the shoddy work these guys continually put out. 140Db's is just sad.................... Replies (15) jamesp on 04/26/2007 11:45:40 Shootah, even though the hand is quicker than the eye...in video, the camera can do wierd things. You know how a video always makes a computer monitor appear to be rolling, or an airplane prop will look like it is only doing 50 rpms...especially funky when filmed with real film at X frames per second makes it look like flipping a deck of cards. Super Hi speed video isnt as bad. Does that show always use MTX stuff? trunkisloud on 04/26/2007 13:18:48 yea theyre pretty fond of mtx....they used to be into directed audio...i believe the jackhammer can do some damage...especially in a truck like that ..but they screwed up....i agree. cplkittle on 04/26/2007 13:28:25 I think MTX sponsors the show. All of that stuff is probably free. I wonder if they have even sold a jackhammer to a consumer. cplkittle on 04/26/2007 13:30:10 mythbusters made the ultimate SPL machine when they connected the home made 50" sub to the drive shaft of that mercedes. 161.3 dB @ 16Hz trunkisloud on 04/26/2007 18:01:57 yea i wish that sub they made would have lasted longer than it did.....popped the sunroof out ...bet it coulda did some other damge if it lasted longer cplkittle on 04/26/2007 19:18:31 my granny could have thrown her dumplins in that car and the SPL would have kneaded the dough for her. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/27/2007 10:36:02 Damn it lost my post. James, I made that comment on the hand being quicker than they eye due to cameres acting buggy. I host ofrgot to clarify. But I have seen many videos showing more than one sub hitting at once, and they didn't look like this. These subs looked at the polar opposite of eah other at the same time. If they were out of phase that would explain the weak SPL response. Guess I'm just trying to find the lost guys an excuse. I have seen many brands used, includind Pioneer, Sony X-Plode, Fusion, JENSEN(!!!GROSS!!) and Directed in the past. But most of the stuff I wouldn't put in the bucket if paid to, or brands that I have never heard of or is OK at best. MTX is the only brand that I semi-like that I have ever seen. Never anything I would go crazy for though. MrBrownstone on 04/27/2007 13:45:44 although I've seen them use Audiobahn, JL, and some other stuff, that has nothing to do with the SPL. 150dB @ 16 Hz would easily make you want to stop living if you were in the vehicle. I experienced 153dB at 45 Hz, and wish I hadn't. ...a little itchy on the pause button while making in-car adjustments. I'm not deaf, but my tonsils & nads shared a moment. trunkisloud on 04/28/2007 00:09:33 hey shootah.......ive witnessed a few directed audio amps and they were pretty stout...im curious as to the quality of their subs though. ttocs on 04/28/2007 09:41:42 anything over 150 dbs and you will wanna be somewhere else. I am on a forum where one of the installers from PMR is on. he talkes about how they are pretty much given the plan from the directers and the equiment when they walk in. They do not have much say on what goes on other then if it is something that cannot work or will not work. The problem with getting ANY spl outta that truck is how old it is. They would have had to spend weeks on there stifffining that thing up and I promis ya the guys that worked on it wanted to and could have(and have) built stuff that you will never even imagine. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/28/2007 10:02:11 Word Trunk, I would trust the word of a fellow Cker's opinion on a brand. I have never even seeen a direwcted product in person. Here in Colo, car audio isn't as popular as it should be, so really only big name brands, wheter quality or not, is usually what is around. Thanks for the enlightenment Ttcocs. I would say that good old Magic Mike and the gang are some pretty damn good actors, because they put on the Idiot Face and pretend it's their idea pretty well. Can't blame a man for doing his job though, and I am sure T.V. Ceo's and the like concerned only with ratings could definitely cheap out on some poor fools whip. I still pity the poor folls, and on on accounts now that that is known. The average Joe isn't gonna know that a set of 3 way comps is probably gonna kick the hell out 16 coax's, and that Is why I am sure that rediculous numbers of speakers seems better....... I had no Idea that stiffening that truck up would make such a difference. I could see why though now that I think about it. Loudest vehicle I have ever heard is a Scoin Xb that pushed 135 db's. I could of jammed to that all damn day though, even if my hearing was shot by doing it. It had a pair of Rockford Power series subs, ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/28/2007 10:02:11 Word Trunk, I would trust the word of a fellow Cker's opinion on a brand. I could of jammed to that all damn day though, even if my hearing was shot by doing it. It had a pair of Rockford Power series subs, in sealed boxes, and 4 pairs of Infinity Kappa component sets. (one set in each door, and 2 sets for each center channel, and there was a rear center channel) I think car upgrading shows (such as "unique" whips, PMR Overhaulin') really don't do enough justice to audio departments of there vehicles. Especially Unique...I don't see how a show that puts the same Alpine fold out screens and JL subs in nearly qualifies as unique, especially when they work on 2 Magnums in the same episode. Also, the most pathetic "custom" work I saw on TV was on that show. How about a dedicated car audio T.V. Show? I would make sure I watched it every week if it was good...........THINK trunkisloud on 04/28/2007 16:31:34 i think (not for sure) that there is a show like that on g4 channel...i dont have that channel but i think i saw it on there before at my cousins house. jamesp on 04/28/2007 18:22:43 Shootah, when I started improving the sound in my truck back in December, I ordered some replacement speakers and a powered subwoofer from Crutchfield. The powered sub was by Directed brand and was an 8" with an 8 passive radiator...then I got a RF 4 channel amp and stumbled into here, Club Knowledge, and with the help from here I amped my system......Well the little powered sub had just enough bump to make me want more bump..Swez made some recommendations and I now have a pretty decent bass engine....Besides, Swez called my original sub a "cute little thing"...here is a pic or 2 of the cute little thing.. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p265/jamesp_1/F-150%20ext%20cab%20Lariat/DSCN2046.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p265/jamesp_1/F-150%20ext%20cab%20Lariat/DSCN2050.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p265/jamesp_1/F-150%20ext%20cab%20Lariat/DSCN2059.jpg Can you see my red A Model pickup thru the window of my truck? before too long, it will be a bumpin ride also...just might require a slight upgrade of the factory electrical system This area with the small section of seat folded down is now covered with a sub box with my 12" type R firing up...with 600 watts. The Directed powered unit had either 60 or 80 RMS.It makes a nice surface to lay tools down on... http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p265/jamesp_1/F-150%20ext%20cab%20Lariat/DSCN2048.jpg trunkisloud on 04/28/2007 21:35:46 damn that is a cute little sub...makes me wanna hold it and feed it and tuck it in and ....well you get the idea. hehe Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
