Ok Major Problem Here!!!!! I was just leaving for work, I turned on the car, all of the lights, and then powered on my stereo and turned it to 30, and all my lights except my blinkers and aftermarket fogs quit working. I mean, my barke lights, taillights, intereior lights, gauge cluster lights dome lights and headlights all quit working. I immiediately checked all of my fuses, and all fuses are intact. I have no Idea what is happening, as I have checked every thing I can think of, and all is normal. This is nuts, and I gave to be to work 40 minutes ago! Please tell me somebody might have an Idea. Replies (41) trunkisloud on 04/16/2007 00:44:41 my buick did that too....i had to mess with the headlight dimmer switch ..pull it back and forth....its tempermental....still does it..... swez on 04/16/2007 01:35:46 Sounds like you'll have a handful with this one bro. I would focus on the dash system too and consider the headlight/dimmer control and may do some voltage probes from the BAT/ALT to the fuse box. To save some time, call around to a few autoparts stores and ask about the electrical system common problems they have seen in this make/model/vintage GM car series. If you find an older guy who's been around the biz for 10 years or more, he'll probably know EXACTLY where the bugs are and how to fix them. Swez PS Not that this will help you get to work tonight, but at least point in the right direction tomorrow. Good luck my boy! MrBrownstone on 04/16/2007 13:06:23 I had this problem with an '89 Cutlass Supreme Int'l. my only solution was to replace the entire car. Is this a GM product? The 'excuse' was it was a Driver Information System going batty, but there were more Gremlins in this car than feeding them after midnight. cplkittle on 04/16/2007 20:47:19 Check the mass of wires in the steering column, I would bet the problem is there somewhere.. You have and use the tilt steering alot don't you? ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/17/2007 04:51:51 I'll scope this all out tommorrow. After averything that happened yesterday, my car is the least of my concerns. Life in general took a pretty massive dump on me yesterday. I have the tilt column, but I NEVER use it unless taking my dash off. I have a perfect setting, and once it's there, I leave it. The suspected problem is the switch in the dash. My brother talked to several mechanics, and they prety much all said that was the likely cause. Mr.B, this is the same car body design as the 89 Cutlass, it it a 96 Buick Century. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/18/2007 19:06:08 So basically, the car is still screwed. I can't figure out what the problem is, and I have been without wheels for like 4 days now. I bought a new switch, installed it, still nothing. Checked all the wiring, nothing. Anybody have any other suspicions? swez on 04/18/2007 19:37:56 As was mentioned before, this may need the skills and experience of a good car tech. Am sure this is not a new problem that has never been seen before. Yes, we can offer some hints and suggestions, but I don't know if any of us are qualified via experience to help you nail things down tight w/o a lot of expensive quess work. I'd like to help, but since I cannot see the problem, do a series of diagnostics and have a decent schematic of your specific car and that system, I feel unqualified to say much more. Hey, this could be as simple as a relay, buss line or a power distribution module just crapped out. But if we don't know what the chain of diagnostic checks are and where to probe, you could be at this for days. (If not weeks) If you plan to keep this car for a year or 2 more, consider investing in the GM mechanics manual that covers all the electricals in your car. I had a 90 Olds Trofeo with massive electrical issue that even the dealer could not diagnose. They kept the car for 5 days and charged $300.00, but could not offer a cheap/easy fix. Spent the $100.00, bought the manual and read it for 12 days until I saw the root cause. Onced I understood the system failures and how they all linked to a given dash module, called the mfg of that module and got an engineer to tell me exactly what went wrong and how to fix or replace it. The dealership said... "We can get your module fixed in 10 days and it will cost $1200.00." I just said screw that route... (this Guy was a school chum too) So, I made some calls, ordered the part and it came from an Iowa boneyard in 3 days. It cost $300.00 for that module, but that was the problem. I installed the used one and everything came back to life as good as new. Back in business in about 2 hours. Whew... it took many hours of guessing and missing and spending good money on bad (yet qualified) advice. Lesson to be learned here, if we are determined and get the right information at the get-go, the job will go well. Anything less is hit or miss. OK, now what's your next move? Swez ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/18/2007 19:48:29 I think I will have to invest in one of these manuals. I simply can't afford the dealership cost to get it fixed, and if the part or parts I need are that expensive, I am pretty much screwed. I just sucks that everything else in the car works fine. I am becoming VERY tempted to find some way to bypass all of the stock bull, and rewire everything through a new, custom switch and fuse. I know that something has to be doable, but I am all out of I deas here. To make matters worse, some of the trouble of my past is been coming to haunt me, and I pretty much can't leave the house because of it. I am going completely insane here! trunkisloud on 04/18/2007 20:37:42 dude im tellin you my car does the same thing too and its something to do with the dimmer switch on the turn signal....i wiggle that thing back n forth and it goes back to normal. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/18/2007 21:04:04 I dont have a dimmer switch on my turn signal. I wil double check this, but I am sure the blinker arm has nothing on it but the wiper controls. Just went out to the car, and no dice. Now one of my foglights are failing to work as well. jamesp on 04/18/2007 21:08:58 Shootah, when you rewired the power to your head unit with that 8 ga. wire did you tie it into the fuse panel. Unless you ran the wire directly from your battery, make sure that a strand or two of the oversized wire isnt touching another circuit...............Unfortunatly it probably will not be that simple but working on old harleys, when a new problem occurs, I always revisit the last things I changed or mucked with. Good luck dude. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/18/2007 22:02:54 I ran it straight from the battery like an amp. I have now checked all the wires I could from around the Alternator, and undid my Alt-Batt in hopes of meybe that helping but nothing..... trunkisloud on 04/18/2007 22:26:06 dude the headlight dimmer is on the turn signal lever ...you pull it toward you to brighten or dim your lights.......at least its like that on my buick. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/19/2007 16:05:21 Nope, nothing like that trunk. Keep in mind I do drive a newer model Century. On a lighter note, the cause has been pinned down and fixed. A clip with 3 power cables melted somehow, and I fixed it by putting a puse block in the wire that melted. Shootuh Back on that road in that Bucket! YYYEAAAAHHH!!! cplkittle on 04/19/2007 16:08:42 the once kicked bucket rattles again. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/19/2007 16:13:53 Exactly, the bucket and myself both got kicked pretty bad. At least my problems are almost taken care of. I haven't been carless for quite a while. This all sucked really hard. trunkisloud on 04/19/2007 18:46:42 yea word up on that .......streat beatin again......buicks kick *** ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/19/2007 22:11:09 I cant believe it was something so ghetto...... swez on 04/20/2007 07:30:27 Good find there Busta. How did you figure out where to look? The real question here, what caused the link to fry? On a more personal note, would you like some one-on-one time with ol Man Swez? I sense you have something larger going on in the frying pan of life and am offering an opportunity to get it off your chest in private. The offer is on the table. Pick it up and see where it leads. swezdp@juno.com jamesp on 04/20/2007 07:36:39 Trunkisloud s... Buick kicks .. but .. Bustacap s ..Bucket is sick I know my rhymes is dope...look out Dre Dre swez on 04/20/2007 07:45:06 Oh brutha, I'm gonna take a few days off and go fishing. Went last night just to knock off the rusty kinks and try out a new/old rig. Word James... that Aquanova WF5F handles very well on a 9'0 rod. It's a tad stiff as it's brand new. However, good accuracy once I got the rhythem for this combo. No catches, but I did see large fish, (Browns and Rainbows) chuggin along, just below the surface. Tossed a few streamers and a black wooly at them for about 2 hours, but no takers. Let the season begin! Swez jamesp on 04/20/2007 08:08:28 So, are you saying that this white boy has no skills?? Oh well Ill keep my day job just in case that thang dont work out. Swez, nothing like a fat, football shaped, aerobatic rainbow or two to help you break in that new line. With your 9 footer you will will be casting the whole line off the spool with only three double hauls. Do you subscribe to any fly fishing publications, or have any favorite ff mags? I need a good dose of fishing fever to get my lazy a$$ out on the water. I dont know if it is the mid life thing or what but I cant seem to generate the ol enthusiasm level that kept me going for so many years. I keep thinking that it is going to kick back in....Maybe if you could dredge up a big ol brown or rainbow.. I need to scan a couple of pics I have from a few trips to the White River in Arkansas a few years back where I caught some jumbo browns and a coup[le of big rainbows and send them to you. Those were some fun trips. swez on 04/20/2007 08:32:22 Yep, feel the same way... but have been keeping an annual fishing log for a few years now and when I read them in the slack days, just pushes me out there to fight off the urge to slack off. Fly Rod & Reel is a good mag. It's mostly advertising, but some good reads in there too. Yeah, tried some double hauls, roll casts and a few over the left shoulder casts too. Pretty rusty alright, but a few more trips with more daylight will whip those back into shape too. My bro, (A 30 yr. veteran on the flyrod) and I swiched rigs for a bit last night and he put it through the paces. "Hummm, this is a nice rig if ya wait for the back loop to fully form" and it casted very well on his double hauls, but the main issue we noth noted... this rod is a bit whippy and needs some additional weight in the butt. (Old Lamiglass blank, 9', 2 pc glass rod) I made this one some 30 years ago and there was no such thing as IM6/7/8 graphites in the mix back then. The solution is a solid IM7/8 Med/fast graphite and perhaps a new reel, later this year. I have this old Cardinal 178 lined up with this #5 line and maybe 150 yds of dacron backing. The drag still works very well after I flipped the corks drag pads and cleaned them. However, if the reel gets dunked, it takes a few minutes to dry out. Have landed a few larger fish on this reel in the past and know it is capable of a 6-10 lb whatevers. (If I pay attention to the details) A sealed drag system will cure that. Am thinking Okuma's Helios, SLV or the Vashon series are all very good choices to consider. Great reels, smooth as silk and well under $200.00. Are you familiar with the Okuma reels? Swez jamesp on 04/20/2007 08:43:30 I have subscribed to most of the rags over the years. I currently have only a script to Saltwater Fly Fishing. Im thinking about re subscribing to Fly Fishing...Good articles seem to get the juices flowing. I have a 30 year old Lamiglas 6 weight rod a girlfriend sent me from Red Lodge Montana for my 21st birthday. They were out there on a Geology field trip. That ol rod is the one that started my flyfishing passion. Man Im getting old...oh well, I never thought Id last this long so thats a good thing.lol swez on 04/20/2007 09:14:24 Yeah, but ya know what... this just proves the passions are still there and even though our bones creek a bit more and we may get tired on the first few outings, a few well played fish will make all that stuff history and fuel the fires of the past as well. It only takes a few good tags to get the juices flowing again. In the meantime, practice and honing the rusty skills will be a good primer for yet another wonderful season of adventure. Swez PS We may be getting older, but as I hear ir from other older guys, we learn to refine and become more efficient with time. This is not a power/precision game like golf. No, we don't use carts in the water, but neither do we have to make every cast a 60' launch either. This has been an unusually low activity. (Sedentary) winter for me. I need to get out there and build up the ol stamina again. Can't do that sitting at a computer, a desk or at the work bench either huh? Time to break out the bike and get some miles on this lazy arsed fisherman. GRIN swez on 04/20/2007 09:16:53 Oh, nice to chat, share a few stories and down a few cups of coffee with ya Jimmy. Glad we are on the same AM schedule huh? It's so quiet in the mornings here. Pops is still sleeping. The pooch is too and I have time to wake up slowly and plan the rest of the day as needed. It's all good! Swez cplkittle on 04/20/2007 09:25:32 I had a really good laugh this morning, James. that was a good rhyme. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/20/2007 09:55:30 YEEEAAHHH James!!! How bout a nice cut from McBustaCap Records? You'll make about as much from it to go out and buy yourself a nice ghetto hoopty bucket too! I just hope you meant sick as in good, and not sick as in ill, and not ill as in diseased..... Unfortunately, no cause as of yet other than age being suspected.....I would like to really pin this down, but don't really know where to start. I am just glad to have it fixed> Now, to fix my foglight that just went out........... Swez, check your mail. How bout Jam-E-To Tha SPL as a rap name for you? Or S to Tha Dubya E-Z for the Swez?? swez on 04/20/2007 09:58:16 Cute... will have to brush up on my rhymes and add a few as they come into being. Ty joined the FBI and is now in working with the LAPD? 3. He is in jail for a long time? 4. Tyrone is now a Preacher in So Cal? 5. Ty is one dead dude? 6. He is an up and comin Rapper? Kinda makes one wonder about a guy who thinks/talks like this huh? I chose answer #5 for Tyrone. Swez ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/21/2007 20:43:02 Dude, that translator is awesome. Including myself sometimes........ swez on 04/22/2007 10:15:28 I ran them by my donkey and that's what he said... One sharp donkey huh? GRIN Swez ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/22/2007 11:37:29 Yeah, let me borrow him to plow the fields. Or his he an intellectual only donkey? I di see shrek, and now understand such a thing exists....... swez on 04/22/2007 12:39:55 This donkey is not a dumb ass. Nor is he an unduely wise ass. But I would consider him a pretty smart ass. (Donkey of coarse) He knows to vacate the premise, when he sees a 2x4 or baseball bat in the hands of a angry idiot. ;-) Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
