O/T: Rewiring Cig Lighter.

My car has a really annoying feature. The ciggarette lighter is wired in the same fuse as the really annoying door chimes, and this stupid "safety feature" that locks all of the doors when the car is put in drive. I was wondering why this stopped working, but didn't really care, as it hasn't worked since the parents sold me the vehicle.

I found out it is in the same fuse wiring as the ciggarette lighter, which I do want to work. The annoying chimes and locks cane definitely saty gone though. Anybody got any suggestions? I am not too sure if i would want to go to a constant or switched lead, and also not too sure where to find one.

tell me what kind of car it is again.. buick regal?

let me know and I can tell you how to wire it up through a relay and a toggle switch so that you can turn it on to constant with the toggle.. turn the toggle off, and it switches through the ignition like normal.

That sounds like a pretty smooth trick there kit! The car is a 1996 Century.

It just sucks when your 50+ miles from home and your car just ate your lighter after you set it down, and the guy next you is giving you road rage, and no ciggarete is possible. Even worse is the door chime though!

In the ignition harness (runs from key cylinder down the steering column) there is a red wire (constant) and a pink wire (ignition).

Tap into the red wire and fuse it at 25amps. Run it to terminals 86 and 87 of a 12vdc 30a relay. Tap the pink wire and fuse it at 25 amps and run it to terminal 87A on the relay. The terminal marked 30 on the relay will be power to the cigarette lighter. The terminal marked 85 should go to your aftermarket switch, then to ground (you will be switching ground on and off).

What this does is let ignition power (87A) go to the cig lighter (30) while the relay is not engaged. When the relay is engaged by giving 85 a ground, it allows current to flow through 87 to 30, switching the constant on and disconnecting from the ignition wire.
Since the coil is also fed with constant (86) your switch will work all the time. I did this to my car because I couldn't charge my phone in my car with the engine off. I also have my stereo on a switch like this as well.

Right on. Is there i simpler way? I dont need to charge anything or even gave a cell phone, I just hate it when I lose my lighter.

In eithier case, this is a clever trick. Where does one get these relay at? Just amy parts store?

Any good autoparts store sells the std Bosch relay for under $3.00.

All the GM cars I have owned, the cigarette lighter is on a constant line and has power at all times. Most are fused at ~25A's. There's no reason you could not run a separate line to the battery and use #10 wire and inline fuse if that is easier than the relay deal. As long as the lighter is not fully engaged in the socket, it draws no power in the at rest position.

If you need a new lighter or socket, same autoparts stores carry refits too.
