I grounded my new Eclipse head unit to a good chassis ground but I soldered it to one of the chassis grounds in the aftermarket harness adapter. Is it a bad idea to do this? I soldered it to wire number 7 Sorry I posted a link to the wiring harness but it didnt work...A proprietary Crutchfield thing or something so I deleted the link Replies (4) cplkittle on 03/16/2007 21:49:31 not sure I understand you grounded it to a chassis ground or the ground in the harness? or both? jamesp on 03/16/2007 22:03:28 Both, I used the long ground on the head unit harness and spliced a chassis ground wirefrom the adapter harness into it before attaching the head unit ground to a good chassis screw. So when the adapter harness was connected to the factory harness it tied into the factory ground too Does that make sense? Also ther is an orange wire with a stripe from the Eclipse harness thet illuminates the buttons when the headlights are on. Swez told me that it may cause some noise and did not have to be hooked up...it just lights the numbers on the preset buttons and the text on other buttons..What do you think I hooked it up and cant tell any noise diff. but only tried it a minute or two. cplkittle on 03/16/2007 22:57:53 The grounding to both wires is not necessary, just keep it in mind if you ever have any strange problems. If the chassis ground corrodes it has another way to go.. which is a good thing, but if all of a sudden you see strange things happening it could be hard to diagnose. The reason I say that is because I would guess that 80% of all problems associated with car audio leads back to the ground. I would leave it since it is done.. If you don't get any feedback, I would use the illumination wire. The biggest problem is that most DIYers don't check the polarity of the dimmer wire. If the HU is looking for a negative and it gets a positive input on the dimmer wire, there could be problems. jamesp on 03/17/2007 10:09:50 Thanks Kittle, and you are right, I did not check the polarity. The org/wht illum. wire is the only wire with the polarity identified on the Eclipse install sheet. It never occured to me that an illumination wire in a domestic vehicle would be other than positive in polarity. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
