Dayton HO 10" Results

Well today was a good one for me as I finally got off my lazy butt and decided to enclose a sub I had laying around.

After I purchased one of the Reference series High Output 10", I was a little skeptical. I mean could this lil sucker really be all that? Then again this thing ain't quite little with it's hefty magnet and cast frame. After some debating on vented or sealed, I decided to go for the simpler approach as vented with this sub calls for too long a port to be practical. Too much trouble with that route.

Going with sealed, the limited xmax of 12mm seems not to be too bad, but is nothing spectacular these days. Fs is a good 24hz. Rms rating is at 600rms which I am able to feed a strong 450rms to it. That should be more than enough seeing that a low Q will be used.

After building a sloped box with a net volume of about .4 ft^3 (sub accounted for), I was a little afraid that it may be on the too large size as this puts Qtc a tad below .707. Yet at the same time I wanted to reassure that the sub integrated with the mids properly. I added a minute amount of stuffing for extra measure as the cone is aluminum and the box is so small. Again I worried that ringing or some other noise may present itself.

After setting the gains and a little tweaking on the crossover around 60-70hz on my trusty ole USB 2150, let me tell you something...... This baby is very impressive! Bass is very smooth with quite a bit of low end detail. Still it is capable of authoritative output. It does have two or three shorting rings if I can remember.... not sure how much difference it is making, but the sound is very clean even with the limited 450 watt A/B amp running it.

Rolloff in this box begins in the low 50's which is about where the blazer starts to pickup. So the two blend rather nicely. I can't say for other vehicles, but I like this sub better than any other ones I've had in this truck. The main thing is the impressive amount of space this doesn't use.

Listening to some jams off the radio (Sean Paul's "shake that thing"???) there notes that present but not overbearing like the Dayton DVC 12" made. Still like that sub, but this one is cleaner by far. Checking out some male vocal R&B tunes on cd with some heavy synth's and bass guitar tracks was pleasant. Even in the low Q box, this sub packs a nice punch that is quite deep sounding for its size and box use. I havent played any bass tracks yet as it is being broke in over the next few days. As for now, I can tell you this one's a possible winner..

Interesting review and let us know how this sub sounds after the break in period. That's one small box for 10.
