HU front channel issues or crossover?

I have a set of Infinity 6.5" comps (Reference series) with matching crossovers.

At nominal to mid volume the left front and somtimes the right are "crackly" sounding.

When you go to almost full volume the speakers clear up and play normally except for the intermittant "cut out".

Althought I like my music loud, talk radio hurts at full volume!

This setup worked fine for close to 8 months but I am mystified as to the problem.

I am no rookie with car audio but have no clue how to identify the problem.

I would be gratefull for any and all help.

Mike

Welcome back Michael,

Here we want to rule out a few things when possible. My gut reaction, suspect it might be your front speakers/crossovers are the root. (Weather related corrosion?) A diagnostics tree would be helpful here:

1. Gently clean the RCA jacks at the T-220 amp with a wire tooth brush (Corrosion free) Reinstall after cleaned and try system again

2. While you're there, look at the power connections to this amp. If they show signs of loose fittings or corrosion, disconnect power to this amp and clean/snug things up.

3. If problem persists, remove the front speaker wires from your T-220 amp and connect some home speakers, (Or use the rear 4x10 speakers as a test) to this amp and try that. If the problem goes away, the problem is somewhere between your speaker wires, crossovers, speakers in front or the T-220 amp.

4. If the problem is still there with known good speakers, remove the rear RCA's from the Crossfire amp and use the front channel RCA's, into the Crossfire amp and rear speakers. If the problem is still there, the RCA's or the HU are likely the culprit. If the problem goes away, your T-220 may have some issues to look into.

5. Lastly, connect your front speaker lines to the Crossfire amp and test again. Use the rear RCA channels to feed the amp and power the front Comps. If the problem remains, it's got to be your front Comps, crossovers or wiring that feeds them. If the problem goes away, back to the T-220 amp or HU front channel preamps or RCA's.

Got all that?

I would almost be willing to bet that one of the speakers are blown or are on their way. You say that when you turn it up it clears up except for the occasional cut out. When it cuts out do all of the speakers cut out or just one channel?

Problem Solved!

Internal amp crossover on the Crossfire...the switch from hpf to lpf is shorting.

A little contact cleaner and its all better!

I found it by complete accident playing with the crossover switch to see if the speaker would play on low-pass and it sprung to life as soon as I touched it...I wiggled it and viola! Amazing!!

Thanks Swez and Kittle for the help!
