Shootah made me think of a post about 2 years ago that had tons of pictures including an 18" sub mounted in a garbage can. I found the thread, but all of the links are now dead. Did anyone save the pictures by chance? Or do you have any new ghetto install pictures? Replies (11) newB on 03/5/2007 23:49:28 no pix. but i just saw a friends new system and he is running 12-volt wire (remote/p.con wire) for a ground and its about two and a half feet long -Drew ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/6/2007 01:18:23 Dude, that is wrong! I bought a used amp a few years ago and it still had all the wiring screwed into it, and it used about 3 feet of doubled up 18GA speaker wire as a ground. This was my first system, and thank Christ my stepdad put it in or whoever hooked it up after that probably would have reused it. Now about 4 inches of 4 GA ground is what I'm using. Man I would love to see some different pics of ghetto rides, so mine looks better, at least to me. Funny thing about Buick Century's though, there are tons of them in my city, and most of them are ratted out waaaay worse than mine. My favorite GHB to date: missing all the lights out of one side, with the grille busted clean in half! Almost looked intentional! 18" mounted in a trash can?!?! I gotta see this! I bet that sounded like hell cplkittle on 03/6/2007 03:02:03 http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=27853 here is an interesting addition MrBrownstone on 03/6/2007 16:07:37 sound isn't based upon the container, so it's not the sound, just the stiffness/rigidity and acoustic nature of the enclosure...and of course, safety. I had an 8" woofer that was hovering over the opening of my desk drawer in college, and it provided plenty of bass considering the 'enclosure' was a drawer 3x the recommended size, wasn't sealed or vented properly. Accuracy was decent considering the imprecise enclosure. Although we can judge the safety of an installation by looking, 'hearing' with your eyes is dangerous. cplkittle on 03/6/2007 17:25:12 I was looking for the two 12" subs duct taped to twin 5 gallon buckets being held in place with a 2x4 screwed to the bottom of the bucket, all carpeted in duct tape. I used to sell hundreds of foam speaker baffles just by holding up a speaker while it was playing, then placing it in the opening of the small cup shaped piece of foam. Once the sound changed, my customers were digging for their wallet. seperation of the backwave from the front, even in an infinite baffle, produces amazing differences. UKinstaller on 03/6/2007 20:40:55 i used to work right in the heart of the ghetto and saw some HOOPTIE stuff. hilarious sometimes. i saw a guy run an 18 AWG remote wire from his battery to a distribution block, complete with ANL fuse holder, and had 3 four gauge power wires coming out of the block. it was hilarious. i have seen a factory honda speaker mounted where the steering wheel airbag was supposed to be in a dodge daytona. i saw a box for 12 10 inch wal mart lightning subs made from scrap wood (2 x 4's, 1/2 inch MDF, plywood, etc). the carpet wasn't even secured to the box, just taped. i saw 8 6x9's cut into the rear deck of a ford focus hatchback it goes on and on. funny stuff. -UK ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/6/2007 22:48:01 Wow, all of that sounds pretty harsh. That Car PC was pretty ghetto, expecially the CD drive. Kinda apeealed to me, but what the hell would I need a comp in my ride for? Everybody was talking about "wardriving," which in my opinion sounds about like the lamest way to waste time ever! I think I'll stick to 4-volt preamps and speakers bigger than 3/4 of an inch for my ride. Also, the guy with the ratty Maxima had a second vehicle, a later model Saturn. After looking at the pics, I spotted a Jensen XS False floored into the trunk. I love false floors and other custom looking installs, but I think the Jensen was waaay out of place in an instal like that. Pretty much all of the car PC installs I viewed looked pretty ghetto in their own ways, but I didn't look too hard. I just can't see how any trashcan would have enough stiffness and structure to support an 18" but you are right, listening with your eyes is definetly dangerous. Happens to me all the time...... cplkittle on 03/7/2007 03:56:50 Speaking of waaay out of place, it makes me sick to see jensen, sony, and other low end equiptment in high end installs.. especially in nice cars. I have seen $10,000 custom enclosures in Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes with sony subs. $10,000 install, $100 subs and amps. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/7/2007 04:46:52 Yeah, man, having that problem with my brother and his Bimmer, but kind of the opposite. He has a pretty solid setup as you would think, with a DVC Infinity Perfect VQ 12, and an Alpine MRD M450, but the signal proccessing to the amp is screwed. I personally think LOC's suck, (Exspecially because his doesn't work properly) but with Stock nav and things of such nature, its kind of hard to trash something like that. Basically, it sounds like crap, and I laugh at him constantly because of it, and he is lucky I dont gaffle his setup to do it some justice. trunkisloud on 04/19/2007 02:34:36 i had an 88 subaru justy.....i believe the brand radio was a kraco .you know the one where the whole face glowed green.....had a cd input jack with my discman plugged in.......factory mids ...had two titan 12's you know the ones with the glitter and the yellow surround....the box was set up where the subs would face the sides of the car....had a six channel sony amp pushin em ....the one with the serious crossovers on it..scored that for 20 bucks...(anyone seen one of those lately).i used the back seat to get myself un-stuck from a mud hole...so back seaters had to lean on the box. the good ol days. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 04/20/2007 11:13:59 I have one main rule, bass over space. My backseat passengers all get to fight over whether the sit their butt on subs, of their feet on amps, knowing fully well of consequences of messing anything up........
