I Have finally busted out the digital camera and put together a photobucket album displaying my Buick Century. So get your funny bone ready and check all of this out. http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s191/GhettoHooptyBucket/?start=all I am getting ready to do some serious work on this ride now, and wanted to supply the visual feed for food for thought. Like they say, a picture says a thousand words............ Replies (27) newB on 03/4/2007 16:31:29 wow ;D "to his, his own" -Drew MrBrownstone on 03/4/2007 16:37:27 Reminds me of my first system. ***sniff** My Boy~~ swez on 03/4/2007 17:39:34 That's a hoot Shoot... a few tips fer ya: 1. Ditch the rock and use a pair of vice grips on the hood lift shaft ($2.00) 2. Tape up your crossovers so they don't short 3. Those pieces of wood under the hood, if they are particle board, they will flake apart with rain in time and mess up your air intake (Pine boards are OK) 4. A new dimension in duct taping art (Uncle Red would be proud) 5. That paint job looks pretty good for an 86. My 92 LaSabre has several bald spots on the roof from 1 winter in Florida sea air. (a real mess and eye sore too) Yep, this is a Ghetto Hoopty Bucket alright. Wear that badge proudly! Swez CLAP cplkittle on 03/4/2007 19:52:22 Sweet. Love the door speakers. Why not ditch the back seat and do something custom? jamesp on 03/4/2007 20:47:28 Shoot-dog, cool, I dig the 50 farad cap desguised as a fire extinguisher in the trunk. How does it sound?? ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/4/2007 23:12:21 James, the operation actually sounds pretty great, sounding better through the whole frequency range than 75% of the crap most people around here are bumpin. All accomplished for under $150. Swez, this thing is a 96! Cancer is eating away at my poor whip! I'm gonna go junkyard hunting and probably replace the whole hood, and have the roof and other places redone. The crossovers behave weirdly because whenever the wires that are untwisted or over twisted, together in them, they will stop sending power to the mid/tweets in the doors. So thats why I have left them as they sit. The one on the pass. side had a nasty run in with the door sill, and was barely recovarable after that, but with persistence, I got it to work again. The wood under the hood is all good, I put pine under there like you said I should. Now to get something to replace it all, like a real metal heat shield........But the intake system does add some serious balls to the whole car. Electrical tape holds this all together. The blinker was destroyed when my and my stepdad were replacing the bulb. We set the lens on the grill- hood area, forgot to put the rock in place, and the hood came down and smashed it to pieces. Said pieces were reconstructed with clear packaging tape, and then taped to the ride. It has been holding like that for bout 3 months now. Kit, the backseat is becoming more and more necassary as I seem to be making tons of freinds in my new location, and do end up playing Designated driver a lot. I want to cut out the rear deck, (the little peice of metal displayed in the "Sound Vent?" pic) so I can move my bumps to the trunk so I can sit more of the crew. BTW, as a kid, I was known as the Duct Tape King. Kind of still holding that title I guess. Also, the fire extinguisher is fully functional, because as they say....S*** Happens, and Crap Occurrs, so I say Better safe than screwed. I have always kept a fire ex. in my car since I started driving, but usually a much smaller one. Hopefully I will never have to use one.......... jamesp on 03/5/2007 08:01:35 Shootah, you know in Car Audio and Electronics mag, how they have an ad showing a big wheel tricycle all pimped out with amps, subs, components, video and the works? I have to believe that was your ride when you were a kid. I hope you know Im just playing with you a bit. I think you have shown good budget ingenuity. cplkittle on 03/5/2007 09:44:13 ghetto budget ingenuity. that should be in wikipedia! swez on 03/5/2007 10:28:12 This is great... a 50 Farad Cap, disguised as a fire extinguisher... LOL I must commend you on the ol "Yankee Ingenuity". When $$ is tight, "creatives" can do miricles with what is on hand. Swez CLAP MrBrownstone on 03/5/2007 17:58:45 Like a guy told me when I got started, "Why do it right the first time when you can spend 2x the money, take 4x as long, and in the end the result is the same?" That guy, of course, paid his mortgage from 1988 to 1990 from my purchases alone. cplkittle on 03/5/2007 20:58:57 James just opened up a huge new field of car audio Fire extinguisher shaped caps spare tire shaped subs suitcase shaped batteries Tire iron custom distribution blocks... ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/6/2007 01:02:12 Yeah, I did what I could with what I have, and honestly, I like the ghetto system appeal because every time I hear a system where some dude forked over $700-1500, and my ghetto crap sounds better than theirs, which does actually happen quite often. I laugh at them a little and then tell them all to upgrade their wiring. None of this would work without my deck and wiring being as high quality as it is, and it seems to be around these here parts, nobody knows what the hell anything bigger than 8AWG is, or has never heard of connectors. On top of that, nobody can dail in a system. Just ask ny next door neihbor. His pair of Thunder 7500's and 3-way FoCal comps couldn't touch my crap until I spent an hour with his Durango. After this hour, I decided I Really need new gear. Tons of people have great equipment that sounds like crap. Only the Shootuh is daring enough to have crappy gear that sounds great. LOL BTW James, no harm, no foul. Your guy's comments have provided me with plenty of good laughter, expecially the 50 farad fire ex. But Kit, don't you remember the Bazooka Bass Tubes that looked like nitrous bottles? They even had different styles for the 3 major brands! (NOS, NX, and ZEX) Honestly, I think such stealth gear would be awesome, expecially the spare tire sub. Too bad fire Ex.s dont find their way to most trunks. Now how bout an amp that looks like an air filter? If only you guys could take a listen, but in the next few weeks, I'm gonna buy an SPL meter so I can at least give you guys a grasp. Wally World has one for like 20 bucks, but I have been meaning to ask if the quality of such a meter is a factor. I only reads up to 135 I think, but I'm sure nobody I know is breaking that number, exspecially me. jamesp on 03/6/2007 08:11:24 How about a stealthy pair of Optima batteries disguised as rocks?GRIN cplkittle on 03/6/2007 17:31:40 gym sock radar detector bag -0- funyuns crossover network biology textbook DSP mardi gras beads laser jammer beer bottle capacitors (in a 6 pack of course) I have seen the nitrous bazooka tubes and the nitrous stinger cap. 30Hertz on 03/6/2007 18:39:01 All I have to say is WoW That is all ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/7/2007 05:47:03 Hopefully not a bad WoW? I do what I can with what I have, and one thing I don't have is permission from mu uncle to start going super custom, or otherwise it would be done. The car is almost paid off, so soon real door speakers will be installed, the rear deck vented, and all subs moved from the trunk. The amp and "door pods" need to go ASAP Problem is, I don't see any good place to mount speakers in the doors without building full custom door panels. I have zero expeirence with custom door panels, except that I totally ruined the door panels of a Nissan Sentra puting in house speakers, and am not willing to do this again, hence the electrical tape. But I'm HELLA sick of looking at this ghetto crap, exspecially after having done a great looking full custom install in my old Toyota. So after a round of good laughs, I'm ready to get down to business. I want to start with my SQ engine, since I have an extra 4 channel amp just chillin in my trunk. But it has no internal crossovers, is a cheap Legacy piece of crap, and is rated at 300 watts peak, so I honestly wonder if my deck won't put out more clean power than that thing. I am completely stumped on speaker placement here. The door panels need replaced anyway, so building something trick would be cool. Kick panels are pretty much out of the question as the footwells are much too small, and the 4x6 stock openings in the dash wont accomodate any componet sets I have ever heard of. I also want to build some sort of center channel speaker system, be it on top of the dash or through some sort of center console system I could build. Pretty much all of this I want to hand build, inclunding my componet sets, crossover networks ect. The rear deck vent will be pretty straightfoward, and it being something I have done in the past, I am pretty comfortable doing it again, as long as it looks good again. So I need help with: Basic theories of crossover networks, where the hell to buy caps/inductors, accomplishing average ohmages and 12 DB/octave slopes. All drivers will be purchased off of PartsExpress.com Pretty much anything to do with custom door panel building/installation/modification, should the doors be the better placement points for mid/tweets. Also, preferably not using fiberglass as I have no Idea of what I'm doing with it.I know the places of the current "door pods" isn't very good for the future, and there being no real contour in that place, no good way to aim speakers that I can think of, I'm stumped, or otherwise I would have figured everything out already. Also, any good Ideas for a center channel would be great. If you need any pictures for a better grasp of what were working with feel free to ask and I will provide. swez on 03/7/2007 11:24:46 You can get all your crossover parts at Parts Express. (Caps, Coils and resistors if needed. Can you take a few pics of the front door w/ panels removed? We may be able to spot a location for front speakers that way. Also, the 4x6 dash speakers can be replaced with component type plate speakers. (4" mid, 1" tweet) Couple this with a 6.5" woofer in each door panel and your front stage will not only look good, but sound good too. (A true 3-way system up front) This may eliminate the need for a front/center stage speaker unless you have a DVD player in mind. The 4x6 plates can be rolled off above 250-300 Hz. (Mids/high) The 6.5" can be run at 60-300 Hz. (Woofer) The rear speakers can be whatever you like. (6x9 or 6.5" rounds) Depending on the space in your door panels, a shallow mount type woofer may be a good option to stay well clear of your window and door mechanicals. We can discuss subs later, but hang on to that Legacy 4 channel amp. It may prove very useful with passive crossovers on the speakers it may power later. Swez ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/8/2007 01:06:12 By bass engine is pretty much in concrete already. My brothers customer that he sold those MB quarts is selling them to him, so my brothers Infinity perfect DVQ and MRD M450 will be mine, if he buys the amps/ subs. I will take pics of the door panels an soon as I work up the nerve to take them off. I have the next few days off, so I will probably work up said nerve. The center channel is prety much neccassary, even though a DVD player is completly out of question, its largely for the learning expeirence, and that a PS2 WILL be installed in the near future. I'm spending too much time waiting for freinds in my ride too often to not have something auxiliry, but I really dont watch many movies. I forgot to mention, I forgot I haven't tested the Legacy yet. I will do this for sure tommorrow. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/22/2007 19:50:21 Updated pics coming soon........Various repairs and upgrades...just need a good day to shoot them. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/26/2007 12:09:25 Updated pics now available, looks/sounds/drives/identified much better now. http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s191/GhettoHooptyBucket/ jamesp on 03/26/2007 14:43:29 You cleaned it up a good bit. You just need to convince your parents that everything you do to the bucket is an improvement and upgrade. Seems to me like cars and car audio is your passion. They should support your passion and give you the green light to do what you want to do as long as you are meeting the agreed upon payment schedule or deal you made for the bucket. I think it has a lot of.. character ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/26/2007 22:15:45 Yeah I spent the better part of 3 days working on the ride, and it definitely paid off. I was about 3000 miles overdue for an oil change too...... The parents are real flip floppy on the mods. My mom Made me buy and install the foglights, had no problem with the first amp/sub combo, and my pops even helped me run my amp cables. But when it comes to the cutting and things like that I want to do, they on't like that Idea that much, and I don't blame them. Expecially cutting holes for crap speakers, and sound ports for a les than ideal sub setup. I'm really satisfied with the setup now that I have my "new" 2-channel amp, I leave the gain all the way down and it pushes all of my ghetto soundstage beautifully without distortion. The high notes are so sharp and clear, I feel like I could grab them. Tons of headroom with that gain level too. Also very pleased with the sealed Kicker 10". I'll put up a pic wen I get one, but my sister's camera phone was glaring too much to get a decent picture. Funny story about the JBL amp: I used to own this amp, but I sold it to a buddy to buy 6x9's as a present for my lady after I lost my previous vehicle. This was the best amp I had ever had at the time, and I sorely regretted the sale when we broke up 2 months later. Haven't spoken to the guy in a while, so I figured I wouldn't see it again. Last Tuesday, while making my usual weekly pawnshop rounds, there it was sitting for $20. I was so stoked! It took some damage while it was gone, and won't function as a sub amp anymore, but makes an excellent top end amp. HAPPY The bucket is a much nicer setup now, except when it's time to open the glovebox. No further mods are planned now, besides a amp wire/batt terminal upgrade, and taking the ghetto tweets out of the panels, and moving them as close to the 4x6's as possible for better imaging and L/R stereo seperation. I'm also gonna run 8GA from the batt straight to the H/u, and reground it. Good Times..... trunkisloud on 03/26/2007 23:54:38 this has inspired me to post some pics of my sled....coming soon..... ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/27/2007 00:33:28 Do it up! jamesp on 03/27/2007 02:06:04 Shootah, what model JBL amp are you once again the proud owner of? ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/27/2007 09:13:36 JBL LC-A752. It's rated a smooth 75x2 if I'm not mistaken. Not much of a looker after all of the scrapes, and it is no longer usable as a 2ohm sub amp, as it will short out in about every 30 seconds for about 5 seconds. When I owned it the first time, I used it with an Infinity Reference 1042W DVC 10' in my first spec box. This thing could really kick out the notes back then. But it runs flawless as a top end amp, and doesn't even get warm at max H/U volume. The amp and second sub pics didn't make it from the camera phone. That thing really vacuumated. Too bad my bro's digicam is out of state. The new Kicker sub needs some recognition. ShootuhMcBustaCap on 03/29/2007 05:59:30 Even more new pics........Included new sub, and Boston sub after latest repairs. I meant to take pictures as I was repairing, with the dust cap off, but I forgot.......... http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s191/GhettoHooptyBucket/ Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
