I just bought a 1997 Honda Accord LX Sedan. I am looking to put together a system in installments. Budget for whole system would be around $600-$700. It has all factory installed components right now. I am not looking for too much bass, just enough for a little kick. I am looking for an in dash Sirius satelite HU. Any ideas or comments would be great. Right now to give an idea on bass levels, I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Regular Cab, with a Pioneer DEH-1500, Sirius Sportster, Profile California Crossover (old school, I bought it in 1996), a RF Punch 2 10" Sub powered by an MTX Roadthunder 340 (old school). I have had this system and transferred it when I bought the Dodge, and added the Sub (from a JL 10") and Sirius. HU came with the truck, I just didn't have the money to start over plus it isn't terrible. I like the Sub in the truck b/c I can bump when I want to or just have a little extra bass. Replies (9) swez on 02/16/2007 16:40:13 From what is noted here it looks like you may want the following? 1. AM/FM/CD/Sirus HU 2. Perhaps a good set of aftermarket speaker up front, (back too?) 3. MTX amp (2 channel for sub?) 4. Perhaps an amp for your full range speakers too? What's the power rating of that older MTX amp? Confirm this list and say more about your brand preferences, if any. Swez Casper73 on 02/16/2007 18:38:46 1. AM/FM/CD/Sirius/ipod? (I have a shuffle) HU. I am pretty happy with the Pioneer in the truck brand wise, but I don't have any real preferences 2. Yes, although I am pretty good with car electronics, I wouldn't want to drill through door panel for a component but maybe go with a 2-way all in one. Definitely replace 6x9's in rear. 3. I still have the truck so everything in it would stay, I would need a sub, maybe two? I would also need a new amp to drive it. 4. If I am already running wires to the back of the car I would probably, go ahead and run another amp for full range speakers. If I can't fit all of it into a $600 budget, I will do it in installments, but I really don't want to go overboard, ballin' on a budget. Casper73 on 02/16/2007 19:07:06 Swez, I was looking around at crutchfield and found a HU that had AM/FM/DVD/CD/ipod/Sirius ready http://www.crutchfield.com/S-htBzpEYRDpu/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?wm=fp&I=257KDDV420&g=168550 Do you have any other HU's that you would recommend like this? I am interested in headrest monitors if I went this route swez on 02/16/2007 23:20:53 That JVC player has some nice features at that price range. Here, this unit only has 1 pair of RCA outs for audio. That's fine for a sub out in the PCM mode setting. If only using the HU amps for front and rear, a modest sub would be good. (300 RMS or less) Here, a single 10 or 12" sub will be plenty. Speakers and amps can be added as you wish and can easily do this one step at a time. The most important speakers, are your front set. Here, the better the quality and decent power handling, the better your front stage will sound when mixed with as sub and rear speakers. The lowest budget way here, use a 4 channel amp to power the front, rear and sub as desired. The front ampo channels can power the front & rear speakers. The rear channels bridged for sub only. Alpine, Infinity, JBL are all quality amp choices for a modest budget. Heck, some of the new 5/6 channel model amps can give even more options too. Comments? Swez cplkittle on 02/17/2007 14:42:17 If you are looking at headrest monitors, this is an area where the phrase "you get what you pay for" really comes into play. There are some cheapos out there that aren't bright enough to see during the day, the color may be off, and some require a really strong video signal that requires a video amplifier. A good warranty is a key buying point here if you buy from a local shop and have them install them. The warranty will read like your car's warranty (3 year, 36,000 mile). I wouldn't buy anything with less than a 3 year warranty. Casper73 on 02/17/2007 20:27:49 Yeah I looked at that HU again and maybe it wouldn't be as good an option. I think I will try and stick with a AM/FM/CD/Sirius/ipod, and if I want to go to dvd later I will add it, through an auxillary input. I also looked at a kicker zx700.5, what do you think about something like that for the amp. I found it for like $315, or so within a short search online so maybe even cheaper. So I still need suggestions I guess. Like I said, I am pretty good with wiring and such, I used to do alot of simple installs, but I have been out of it for about 5 years after I bought my truck, so I am not up on what is good. cplkittle on 02/17/2007 20:31:29 Kicker has been manufacturing pretty solid amplifiers for quite some time, this one is no different. If I had to list my favorite top 5 brands (high dollar audiophile equiptment included) Kicker would be one of them. newB on 02/25/2007 04:06:27 (sorry for off topic) but i have chosen not to run kicker for the same reason i dont like MTX, they seem to be more like hype brands. every time i read mtx's specs i laugh, although the higher end for both are amazing the entry-level stuff i just get a bad feeling from. i can think of 5 off the top of my head i like more than kicker is all....... -Drew swez on 02/25/2007 11:54:58 This is pretty much true of most budget minded lines we see out there. The same thing is true in branded names, but mainly in their low end gear as well. Some of the low end gear from say Kicker, RF and MTX are just that... "Low end gear".
