Dust Cap

Hello all,

I just have a quick question in regards to the dust cap on speakers. My buddy of mine just bought a used set of comps and the midbass driver has a crack in the dust cap. Does the dust cap actually have any affect on the SQ or is it just a "dust cap?"

If its will affect SQ can it be repaired?

Thanks,
Jason

it can probably be glued back together, but certainly could be repaired one way or another. It is a part of the speaker and does effect SQ but as long as it isn't too bad you may not notice.

He can order replacement dust caps from Parts Express. They have a variety of sizes to choose from. A loose or cracked cap can buzz or rattle on low bass notes and that can drive a listener nuts in time. If one is damaged, may as well get 2 caps and replace both so they are fresh, new and in perfect condition.

as long as the dust cap isn't flopping in and out, don't worry about it. If it is absent or broken off, then repair is needed. A crease or an indent isn't going to ruin the sound.

In the spirit of old adages in car audio, "If you didn't hear the difference, was there one?"

Too many people, myself included, hear with our minds. Knowing that there is a hole in the surround or the dust cover is dented drives you crazy. No, there is no difference in sound, but can you let it go?

Hee Hee :-)

True story. I had a friend with a 3 inch hole in his box. We had the same woofers, and the same car (Cutlass Supreme 1989). He had a vented enclosure, but took the port out. He was going to cap the hole, but forgot it and drove off.

2 weeks later, when swapping amps, I noticed it. I didn't say anything because the sound between our systems was minimal at best.

He let it go, but didn't know he did until he went to replace the woofers a few months later. This is why I tell people that you can have a 1 inch hole in your box and not notice...because you can have a 3 inch hole--and barely notice it.

Basically, a vented box here, but not a tuned one is all. This vent just reduced some of the back pressure on the inside of the box.
