Hey whats going on boys and girls. Been a while since I've posted but I still troll the forums to see if I can add any input but looks like everyones got in under control =) Here is the following review I did today on the JL 8w7v3: So after months of having my equipment sitting and haunting me everynight as it layed on the floor mocking me I finally was able to throw it in the truck. Its not all custom looking yet but I just wanted to get it in to see how it would sound before I spent the time and money to start the positioning of components, amplifiers and the fiberglassing to finish the project. I was a bit apprehensive about having only one 8" sub to satesfy my needs but after it was all said and done, I was rather impressed and decided to throw up a tiny ass review of how it sounded. I didnt have time to throw in my components and didnt have the room to install my Alpine MRV-F450 yet so this is about as stock as it gets lol. Please keep in mind that this is my subjective review of this woofer. Others my have different opinions and outcomes based on their experiences. Grading is on a scale from 1 to 10 stars and is focusing on the overall performance of the woofer based on my thoughts. One being the worst, 10 being the best. The gear is as follows: 1^ft slot ported enclosure tuned to 32hz (1)JL 8w7 (1)JL 250/1 0 guage wiring power/ground 4guage to amplifier Eclipise CD8445 To start off I turned off all types of equalization from the HU and put in a test CD with tones recorded at 0dB. I placed the volume on my HU at about 3/4 volume and connected my multimeter to the speaker outputs and tuned the amplifier to the correct voltage required for 250watts. After that I did a little subjective tuning to my tastes. To start off my review I decided to go with some Rap. I played "Late Night Tip" by Three Six Mafia. As I'm sure you all know this song hits low as hell and figured it would be a nice test for the output and overall depth the sub would be able to reach. Right from the beginning I was impressed with how well this lil guy performed. The output was impressive. I've seen twelves that didnt get as loud to the ear and supprizingly this lil dude moved some good air. The notes were clear, low and had some good punch. Grantid its not going to make your ears bleed like a 15 or a good twelve but for a single 8, I was pleased. Score: *********(10) Next I wanted to try some Metal to see if It would play well with the drums. The track I played was "Fields of Despair" by Dragonforce. I picked this track because its very fast and musical at the same time and would be table to challenge the woofer. I was pleased with how well the woofer reproduced the drum kicks in the past I have noticed that some woofers overpower the music. This was not the case with the 8w7. The bass was not overpowering and complimented the music nicely. Overall I was happy with the performance but if you listen to this type of music, I would reccomend using a sealed enclosure or tuning higher than 32hz if your going ported Score: ****** (8) So I've tried Rap and metal, next I decided to go for something different. Techno! I know most people hate this type but since I am a gamer at heart, and starting to tinker around with my own stuff I wanted to see how this woofer would play. I threw in "Fire" by Ferry Corsten. Right off the bat the bassline was strong and defined yet not overpowering. The beat was present and you could feel the music beating lightly against your chest. The low notes were hit with ease and really made me enjoy the Music. Score: ********** (10) Next I played "When I get where I'm going" By Brad Paisley. This song has a nice bassline and in the past the woofers I've had overpowered the music. As the music played I noticed the bassline was strong and defined. It was however a little strong for my taste with the song played. Score ******(8) For my last piece of music, I played "A Thousand Years" by Sting. This is one of my all time favorites from this artist and really enjoy closing my eyes and letting the music engulf me. This song playes fairly low and it slow paced. Once again the w7 played great but slightly overpowering on the bassline. Nothing a little tuning cant fix. Score: *********(8) Total Points Available: 50 Total Earned: 44 OVERALL: 88% B+/A- I guess I cant really cant say much more about this woofer. I know others say I'm on the "bandwagon" but I can honestly say, for a 8" this lil guy performs great. The price tag is high, yes I agree althrough for this application, I decided I wanted to pay for it. Through the different type of music played I did not notice any large peaks in the transient response. It played strong, it played soft and it handled many different types of music quite well. For an 8" Woofer, I'm sold on this 8w7. Any questions or comments can be left here. Thanks! J Replies (6) lilschtive on 12/29/2006 22:01:08 Wow, thats a very thorought breakdown. Sounds like this little sub packs more than a punch! cplkittle on 12/29/2006 22:06:14 Just one quick question... why did you chose 32Hz for an 8" sub? I would have thought 38-40 would have given a better response for an 8 especially in a truck. However, if it is doing as well as you say, you must have done something right.. P0werLifter on 12/29/2006 22:10:29 32hz was reccomended by the manufacturer. Not only that but since I listen to a very broad selection of music I wanted my sub to have a very dynamic range. I' have alot of experience with tuning low and building enclosures so I was pretty happy with the little one I threw together. cplkittle on 12/29/2006 22:14:54 What is the LPF set at? P0werLifter on 12/29/2006 22:17:16 LPF @ 200hz with a 24db per octave slope. SubSonic Filter is set at 32hz Once I get my components all in I'll be retuning everything =) swez on 12/29/2006 22:17:22 Sounds like a winner and as the sub breaks in, expect it to get a biut deeper and smoother too.
