need a list of what is in the car, and how it is wired.

Is this the Hifonics amp in the haunted car?

nope. this is an install i did for a friend. its a 93 mercury tracer. POS car.
its a P3001 with two FUBR 10s in a 1.8cuft vented box at 32hz. he has no amp for the interiors- so its just a plain setup for the subs.

The low frequency hum is usually associated with either poor grounding of the amp, HU or loose RCA's. Another possible option is that the RCA lines from the HU are too close to the main power line. The 3rd thing to look at, is the amp gain settings. It these are set too sensitively, noise is amplified as well as the audio signal.

ah i see.
the RCAs are run on opposite sides of the car so thats not an issue.
i'll double check the RCAs to amp and amp to groud connections and update.

I have also seen low quality HUs produce hum through sub RCA outputs.
Or one of the foils in the HU for the sub out is blown.

solved.
its acutally a funny story.
i was out of town for the day so he took the system to the local audio xpress (vacaville cali) and i assume in an effort to sell him their product told him 1)his subs are blown 2) his amp is fried 3) his bat is bad.
i had it fixed in 3minutes.
i isolated the problem to the amp, then further to the power wire which was.... loose!
problem solved.

That was a low down dirty trick to pull on someone. If anything, they might've guaranteed that he won't be back!

Just think what he might have gotten himself into if he didn't have a friend like you.....

What was the root problem here? (Just a loose wire?)

I have seen some very sloppy work done by others and noted one cheap amp and so-so subs just needed some tidy wiring work. The power and ground wires were not cleanly installed in the amp power/ground lugs. Then, looked inside the sub box and noted the sub wires were neither soldered nor used terninating crimps. Once that was all cleaned up, the system actually sounded pretty decent.

All that to say... "sloppy/careless workmanship" is often the key to poor results. It is amazing how many hacks try to do this stuff and don't blow up their gear in the process.
