I just want to make sure i get everything right this time when i install my new amp. My old one went fried, and now im putting a new one into my car. Is there anything specific i should do prior to installing the new amp? I know the general stuff, but im just scared taht something stupid will go wrong.. thanks, GRIN Replies (7) swez on 12/26/2006 13:21:44 Tell us what you have done before and how it was installed. We'll fill in the gaps for you. Swez lilschtive on 12/26/2006 15:03:50 1) took amp out, put in other brothers car 2) installed back in my car, turned on, subs dont work 3) fuses are OK 4) amp is gone 5) got the new amp 6) here i am When i installed my old amp, i used the previous wires that were laid down from an older amp. Red to the battery, black to the ground and then a blue skinny one (think it does to HU, not sure). Then i just put them where they went, turned ym amp on and it worked for a year. now it pooped out, and here i am thanks, Steve Ash on 12/26/2006 16:47:32 Well, the fact that it worked for a year means something. If it were wrong you would have known it in less than a few hours at the most. The blue wire is the remote that let's the HU tell the amp when to come on. lilschtive on 12/26/2006 18:06:03 im 99% sure i fried the amp when i put it into my brothers car...i took the grounded wire off first, instead of last.. swez on 12/26/2006 23:26:39 Ok, if that is what you beileve fried the old amp, what will you need to do to prevent that from happening again? Think it through as you already know the answer, then come back and tell us how to avoid such things and why... Yes, I an asking you to solve this problem based on over a year of using CK as a sounding board. Why? Because I believe you already know the correct steps, but just need to be confident in your own present knowledge. Hint: Wire things up without the battery connected will save you the last fate. ;-) Swez lilschtive on 12/26/2006 23:44:38 OO nice tip..IDEA yeah i already new the main answer, i just really dont want to ruin this amp..im strapped for cash and i need to save every penny Im just going to disconnect the battery..connect ground wire, HU wire and amp wire. ill put the subs in..hook those up. and then ill go back, connect the battery and turn on my car. ill keep the volume between 30-50 for the first few days (max is 80), till the amp is broken in. if i failed to disconnect the battery, or put the grounding wire on first, the amp would be straight powered with electicity, and basically fry everyting. i want to break in the amp first, because if you just blast the volume on a new amp, it wont last too long. ok..now am i missing anything! PROUD -Steve swez on 12/27/2006 08:46:58 I think you have it pretty well nailed down here Steve. When you pulled the old amp and switched it to your brother's car, disconnecting the ground cable first cause all grounding to shift to the RCA wire grounds and HU. (The power supply could not handle that shift well. That immediate loss of a good ground, may have been enough to fry circuits in a lesser amp that may not have some of the better power supply protect circuits.
