Ok bare with me. I am getting feedback from my stereo when I turn it on and then the sound comes through. Then when I turn it up I get a high pitch squeal. I realize this could be a ground issue. So I traced back the ground to the harness that has the ground, positive and negative leads, from that harness on is just the positive and negative. How can I insure I have a good ground (can I cut or splice the ground from the harness and ground it out myself). Replies (9) swez on 12/26/2006 12:40:39 When dealing with aftermarket HU installs, the factory harness ground is often not adequate when using outboard amps. Here, we often suggest grounding the HU black wire to a good metal ground in the dash cavity. (Paint free and sanded to bare metal) Also, when using outboard amps, the amp grounds must be to bare metal and very secure to things like the floor pan or a seatbelt harness bolt. Again, this much be paint and debris free. (Sandpaper or a good wire brush is often the best choice) What make and model car do you have here and make/model of the HU and any amps used? Say more so we can guide you through the process. Swez PS Does your vehicle have a premium audio kit with external amps in the system too? Say more... newbie on 12/26/2006 15:03:33 My make and model is a Suncruiser pontoon (some assembly require- project boat) with a very inexpensive Maximum stereo, (however at this point it is what I can afford). I completely rebuilt this pontoon from ground up and my final project is the stereo- probably will install a new one but my bugdet is max'd out. Thank you for the input. I'm going to cut the ground and ground to the boat frame within swez on 12/26/2006 23:33:32 Ahhh, a boat is a very different animal to work on. Here, we don't often have the luxury of a common ground body/frame like a car. Also, noise supression in marine electronics are nothing like a car. We don't have as many options but to isolate the audio signals and power supply noise with outboard filters. The charging systems on most outboards are pretty basic and crude, when compared to car systems. Do you have these noise issues when the motor is not running and you are only powering the HU off the Battery supply? Say more please? Swez ttocs on 12/26/2006 23:59:52 is this with the motor on? If it isn't then you may be adding a floating ground radio to a common ground wiring system or you could just have a speaker shorting out. You have checked all the connections? What is all in there and what are you putting in there? newbie on 12/31/2006 08:04:26 Sorry been out of touch for a little while. The problem seems to have disappeared-- I had a short in an electrical wire for my nav. lighting. After I traced that down radio seems to work fine. Not sure if the one caused the feedback in the other but for now I'm good to go. May just take it out this weekend-- even here in Michigan it's almost like spring. Can't ice fish so may just don the Carharts and pleasure cruise and fish (that said it will probably led to a "if you are a redneck" joke) I sure do appreciate the advice though swez on 12/31/2006 17:38:18 Heck Yeah... Michigan's winter sure has a pleasant start. (Mid 40's for highs and low 30's at night) If I had that option, you bet I'd put on a snowmobile suit and take to the lakes for some pike, walleye or even look for bass. (Bass season closes on Dec 31.) Catch and release only until spring. What part of MI are you located? I'm just west of Dearborn and often fish the rivers and lakes out in Pinckney to Ann Arbor. Any steelhead action in your area? Swez ttocs on 01/1/2007 08:49:26 hey newby, not near Farewell MI are ya????????????????? newbie on 01/1/2007 12:00:35 Born /raised in Williamston near Lansing.
