Is that a box included? That will raise your cost up a bit unless you are capable of building one yourself.

Here's a amp worth having that's able to handle upgrades:

This sub is from a tried and trued company. A little on the flash side but should have good performance with the above amp wired into 2 ohms:

This combo will leave you with a little spare change for materials if you decide to build a box. Plus not to mention, I think shipping is free for this setup.

That amp should do a nice job, paired with that PG sub. The sub has a very high efficiency rating, so a huge power amp is not needed to get some solid bass SPL here.

what size of a box would work best with this sub

raulbustos on 12/23/2006 23:15:37
you know what i think he wants to buy a box as well with this budjet

Parts Express lists the specs on this sub. They recommend the following enclosure sizes:

Sealed: 1.6 cf (a typ 1.25 cf, 1 lb polyfill should do it well)
Ported: 2.0 cf

With a box included, that can drive up cost considerably. Thus, staying within the projected budget might net a sub/amp combo of lesser quality.

If you check around on the net you may be able to find a sub/box and power it with a 2 channel class A/B amp bridged mono 4ohm. However, upgrading might not be possible. Give some time and maybe we can find a suitable solution.

E-bay will often be the cheapest enclosure if you want a prefab. Here's one from R/T that should work out pretty well:

This one will also work, but you'll have to make a trim ring to accomodate the 15" woofer mounting hole and size it down to a 12" sub. It's 1.75 cf internally and a wee bit large for that PG sub. However, a few segments of pine board can be used internally to bring the airspace down as needed:

i like the less than 200 setup you listed. question? how hard would it be to find a sub in that range of decent quality that is dual 4ohm VC so he can get the most out of that amp?

Most DVC's can handle more power and there are many brands that we don't often mention that would probably do a decent job.

On that come to mind would be the Infinity Reference series. I believe these come in 10's and 12" models and under $100.00 if you shop well. They are rated at 300 RMS.

JBL, Kicker Comp VR's and several other brands can do the job as well. If you wait until January, the 2006 models are usually discounted well at the "Big Box" stores as they make room for the 2007 models.

Your friend needs to understand that he is asking for quite a bit much with that budget. Of course we could find a package that will fit it but, there would certainly be a degree of way lesser quality.

If sticking to what Swez says is true of the 1.6 ft^3 needed for the combo I mentioned, here's a box that should work and the cheapest you will find....

Throw in zip code to check the shipping price and there you have it. Anything cheaper and you might as well get one of those Walmart Lightning Audio box kits.

well when i showed him the pg sub and that amp he liked them but when i told him that it would drive the price above he dint like that so much he said if we could find a sub, box, and amp that would be better he dosent get verry much money and this 200 is the savaings of a few months plus his christmass money. but if you guys feel that it is really not worth the it il let him know that thanks i like what i see

Ash on 12/27/2006 12:01:26
Have you tallied the cost of the box mentioned above? That is very cheap price wise for an enclosure of that material.

Raul, what about wiring? Hopefully he has that already.

raulbustos on 12/30/2006 00:42:53
well i have and old kit that i was going to let him have . will an 8 gauge work?

Ash on 12/30/2006 01:49:29
8 will be alright as long as you don't try to pull any more power from that amp. 4 with a distribution block then 8 would be ideal.

Is there going to be another amp for mids/highs? Especially if ran a good length, then most definitely he will want to upgrade.

So, are all the components mentioned above going to fit the budget with shipping?

swez on 12/30/2006 22:55:22
Ditto!!!

Plan ahead and use #4 gage wire from the BAT/Fuse to a decent Power Distribution Block. (One that has #4 gage inputs and several #8 outputs)

This allows one to only run the main power line once and be prewired ready for a full range amp later if desired.

raulbustos on 01/2/2007 18:42:33
no he will not be puting another amp for mids or highs( at least not in the next few years) and that box would cost 41.77 shiped verry nice if you ask me and the budget went up but also so did the equipment the budjet went to 270 but with a box and wireing

Ash on 01/2/2007 22:54:50
If he's really tight for money as it seems, then getting into that type of setup will almost be impossible unless used equipment is utilized.

My next idea may bring scoffs from narrow minds, but what the heck.

Okay, so no amp for the mids and highs, right? So why all the need of a powerful sub and amp. The power ratio between bass and highs will be way off causing a major imbalance. This solution is mega cheap, efficient, and still clean within "exceptable limits".

http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/product_info.php?t=3&products_id=183

This in the S4 (4 ohm version) running in the same $41.77 box should be a perfect match.

Pair that with a amp like this or another 150rms @ 4 ohm bridged amp of your choice and there you have it.

http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/2598827/vpcsid/0/SFV/30046/order/asc/order_by/sell_price/sret/21611214219214215212281212217282215214221286217226235290221224295238227234229244243244245236247232

Simple and very cost effective! Don't expect mega output with this, but I'm williing to bet he will be suprised. The specs on that sub can rival other entry level subs at a far lesser cost. Keep your eye on excursion and it will last a good while!

raulbustos on 01/13/2007 00:25:34
okay well he really hasent decided what to do let me ask you guys this what would be the cheapest that you should go for a single sub system ?

i have paid over $800 for a set up what is the botem line that we really shoud use ?
some examples of some single and dual subs would be awsome

this is mroe for my own knowldege it would be great to know this for when some one comes and askes me

Ash on 01/13/2007 06:32:41
In all honesty, cheap as you can get it without sacrficing quality. Seriously.... It's not what you spend, it's how you spend it.

First you have to set a goal. One has to decide what they exactly want: "SQ, SQL, or SPL"... Then map the system out: "how much power and output do they want?". "How much can they afford?" "How many speakers need upgrading and which ones will need an amp?"

Unlike many that stick to their "usual brands"; there are a plethora of equipment and brands that can be used if you keep an open mind. Like that last setup from EDesign. I found and compared that sub to other entry level subs in it's class, saw that it faired well or even scored better than most in that power range. Then I ran it through WIN ISD, found an quality enclosure that would work and wallah...

In a nut shell, I don't think theres an absolute minimum because timing and sources means everything. Sometimes you can find exceptional deals, sometimes you can't. But as you see, the $200 was kind of slim for what he "wanted". If he would have settled for a single 4 ohm sub, a bridgeable class A/B 2 channel were used, and even box built by you or him, that would have cut costs considerably!

It's nothing wrong with being picky when your funds are limited. You just have to have a preset goal, have patience, and put in the time to find those "deals" that will work for your budget.

I really think the $200 might have worked though a few bucks ($30-50) more would have been nice.
