about 10days after i bought my BXi1600 Hofonics Brutus Amp it just stopped working and went into protect. couple days later- my HU just stopped and wont turn on. now- my dome light just stopped. is is possible that these are all related? when it started nothing changed. it just seems like i get up in the morning and they dont turn on. thanx in advance -Drew Replies (16) cplkittle on 12/23/2006 00:19:48 It is haunted. Disconnect the speakers from the amplifier Check the ground on the amplifier Check the fuse on the HU Check the radio fuse in the car Check the light bulb in the domelight Check the courtesy / dome fuse in the car Disconnect both battery terminals, clean them, then reconnect them. After you do ALL of these things, try to turn the HU on. If the HU works, see if the amp is working with the speakers disconnected. If it is, connect the speakers back to the amp. If the amp goes into protect let us know.. This is a thorough start, we will go from there. newB on 12/23/2006 02:07:08 speakers to amp is good. fuse in HU is good all fuses under hood are good havnt checked bulb in dome light (to lazy) but its fairly small on my priority list bat. terminals are CLEAN. anything else? -Drew swez on 12/23/2006 08:32:33 Measure the output of your Alternator and battery to see what kind of voltage numbers are present when the vehicle is running. The normal charging voltage should be between 13.5 - 14.4 volts DC. If you see numbers considerably higher or lower than that range, your alternator may have a few internal problems to be looked at. Swez ttocs on 12/23/2006 10:37:56 the dome light is normally on the same circuit as the +12v constant that keeps the radio memory. Check all your fuses both under the dash and under the hood as well as check all your connections to see if something grounded out, blowing the fuse. newB on 12/23/2006 21:21:26 i just re-checked everything. every fuse i could find is good. the deck is 6+yrs old so i think it was just its time. i just dont want to re-hook up my 1600watt amp and blow it again. should i be worried? -Drew swez on 12/23/2006 23:52:58 Not worried, but digging into this situation may take some patience and careful looking around. From what details you have stated and other replies mentioned, it would be well to check your +12 volt constant supply line for the HU. If that failed, you'll have to run a new line off the BAT or fuse panel block and fuse it at 10-15 amps. (Inline fuse holder) Did you pull the HU out and check the inline or rear mounted fuse there too? Swez newB on 12/24/2006 02:38:40 yeah. the HU has a 10amp. fuse in the back and its good. im probably going for a new HU. and the bat. is 14.4 volts w/out power to amps. im going new HU and reinstalling soon. i just dont want to mess up the equipment i put in. ive gone through the whole system and as far as i can tell its good... i'll check the power wires to HU 2morrow and update. -Drew ttocs on 12/24/2006 14:20:01 that may not fix the problem. You need to test for power on the constant and switched wire behind the radio. swez on 12/24/2006 14:27:43 Absolutely!!! The HU may still be fine. You need to determine if it is getting power via the RED (ACC/IGN) wire and the YELLOW constant +12 volts to ground. If either of these circuits are dead, the HU will not work. Swez newB on 12/24/2006 18:19:04 yeah. thats what i ment. im going to do that in about 20minutes -Drew newB on 12/24/2006 18:26:02 ok. so the constant 12volt is good. and i got minimal readings from the ign wire. like ~.01 when i connected the circuit. is that not enough? -Drew swez on 12/24/2006 20:26:12 The ACC/IGN to ground reading should be at least 12.0 volts DC, but only when the the key is in ACC mode. When the engine is running, you can expect a healthy 13.5 -14.4 volts DC there. If you still get well below normal readings on that line, (Below 10 volts) the HU will not turn on. That would lead one to either trace this line back to the fuse panel or just run a new ACC/IGN line. Tech Tip: Some vehicles have power to the cigarette lighter only when the ACC/IGN is circuit is engaged. Others have a constant +12 volts at all times. You can tap in there if you wish. But if that circuit is a constant 12 volts, you'll need to turn off the radio each time you leave the vehicle or it can drain your battery in time. Swez newB on 12/24/2006 22:34:28 hm... very good tech tip. i will have to check that. how do i run the new acc/ign line? -Drew swez on 12/24/2006 23:22:03 In the main fuse panel inside many vehicles, there will be a terminal that is fuses and says ACC/IGN on either the fuse box cover or look inside your car manual at the fuse locations. In many cases, you will see a fuse that is marked RADIO. This would be a good to check for power and tap from there. The other thing you might want to check very carefully, is the slicing connection used between the HU and the factory harness connects. If that splice has failed, simply test for voltage 1st, if you find 12 volts with the key in ACC mode, then check to see if power is going through that line and splice. If the factory line is powered but the HU adapter is not, bad splice.... fix that with a fresh barrel type crimp connector. Hint: Do your wire splicing when there is no power flowing in that line. A. Turn off the key B. Pull the ACC/IGN fuse in the panel c. Do your splice and then reconnect the fuse and see if the HU fires up again Swez newB on 12/24/2006 23:57:06 yeah that sounds good. i'll get 2 work on that tomorrow! =D -Drew newB on 12/29/2006 03:27:17 < i found a THIRD fuse box. this one was almost above the stearing column. new fuses in there and i realized i had fetures in that car that ive never used! lol -Drew Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
