It's time for me to start thinking about what kind of alarm to get for my corolla. I really need one that has a paging system because I work really late at night and my vehicle remains exposed in an industrial park type of area. I need to know if someone's messin with it. In the building I work in there are almost no windows looking outside and the equipment we use make it imposible to hear outside noises. I know that this is something I don't want to tackle myself. I wish ttocs lived in my area. Does anyone on this board live in my area? Anyways, I've looked at several different brands from clifford to compustar. You guys have any suggestions?THINK Replies (8) ttocs on 12/18/2006 21:24:13 I do not know what your area is? The alarm is only as good as the install. A great alarm with a bad install is a really bad alarm. A bad install can leave your car open for theives, a really bad install will leave in non-operating. Do you know someone that can install alarm, and more inportantly has installed alarms before? If so you can get alarms for much cheaper and slide your installer a few bucks for his time and come out ahead $$$. If you do not then you need to start checking out local shops to see what kind of work they do. Ask what kind of connections they do, what brands they use and recommend. Most shops only carry one, maybe two brands and most likely it is made by DEI(Directed Electronics) as they have been buyin everybody. They make a solid product no matter what you choose. How far is your office from where you park? Remember that there is a limit to how far the 2-way systems work...... cplkittle on 12/18/2006 21:52:29 Where do you live Raven? ravin on 12/19/2006 03:30:41 I live in Modesto California. The hot! hot!! centeral valley. The distance from where I park to where I work is only about 150 feet. MO on 12/19/2006 11:29:49 I whould recommend any of the (DEI) brands / VIPER, CLIFFORD, PYTHON and have it installed by a authorized dealer. BEST BUY or Circuity City or a reputable shop. I know bestbuy and reputable shops carry a lifetime warranty on workmanship and such. The only problem is that they might charge extra for aux. release of the trunk if its a sedan and a triggor to set off the alarm back there. I think it should be part of the alarm price but bestbuy didnt cover that and my alarm was capable of using this feature. When i pop my trunk open with the keys from the outside my alarm does not go off. They will charge for anything they can. I whould recommend a 2 way pager alarm by either DEI company brand or CRIMESTOPPER which also specialize's in alarms only. MO on 12/19/2006 11:31:15 I should have said Installation price did not cover the trunk release and arming it. ravin on 12/19/2006 14:44:59 I think I'll check some of the local shops. What type of questions should I ask them to find out if they do quality security installs? Should I ask to speak with the installer that would be doing the alarm install? Is there anything else I should question, like do they gauranty there installs of alarms? Thanks for all the feed back so far guys, your all the best thats why I post here. cplkittle on 12/19/2006 15:46:08 Most alarms come with a lifetime warranty as long as you own the car. You can expect to pay between $250-400 for a 2 way installed. The 2 way alarms can reach up to 5,000 feet if unobstructed with brand new batteries. Battery strength of the transmitter will determine range. Your vehicle does not look to be complcated at all unless you want remote start to go with it. If you do add $150-200. The best way to find out how good the installer is, is to drop by several times in a week and ask the people that are waiting what they are getting. If alot of them say the brought their car back to have something fixed, you might want to continue looking. You can ask to speak to the installer. some general conversational topics are: where do you normally mount the alarm antenna? how often do the alarms false trigger? How long does it take to install (should be under 2 hours for security only) what is the most common complaint of the system as a whole? By this time you should be able to tell if he is shooting you straight, or if he is B.S.ing his way through it. There are not any correct answers so to speak, just listen to what he has to say and decide if you want this person working on your car. ttocs on 12/22/2006 10:28:32 How do you make your connections? t-taps are a no-no, crimps are acceptable, solder and tape is preffered.
