(Slightly O/T) Personal Rigs

Me and my bro were talking stereos today, and the topic came up of who I thought on Ck has the baddest stereo.
I told him that the real CK troopers help people more than they talk about their own stuff most the time. So if this isn't a weak topic, why don't people let us know what theyre running in their vehicle, what the vehicle is, and personal opinions of why you selected the equipment. I figure this would be a cool way to spread reviews, knowledge and personal reasons why you like your stuff. This is a civilized enough website where nobody is gonna be bragging about that theirs is the baddest hands down, and this isn't the car audio chatroom at aol, so can we do this?

That's about it... there are few guys on CK that have installed some top flight gear.

Those who have them, share details as a guide for others, rather than brag about this or that "toy" they just bought. We are more about helping others w/ their rigs, then touting our own stuff.

Personally, I really like helping others get the most from what they have. Be it a $300.00 rig or several thousand dollars worth. If we all had lots of cash to blow, no doubt we's all own Diamond, JL, Focal, JBL, RE and other nice stuff. But, for those that can afford it, great and it's a pleasure to help them get the best from such things.

We are here to guide those who ask for help... not brag about this or that. That's about it.

Understood, but I was thinking of putting the bragging aside, and just focusing on equipment choices and why they were made, as opposed to my stuff better because: type of things.

For example
My rig
Alpine Deck, (Was cheap, I like alpine stuff)
Boston sub (Was also cheap, Loved Boston stuff I used in past)
Alpine Type S 6.5 (Given by freind)

Stuff like this, constructive information, so others may be helped by information on good equipmend choices, bad ones, ect.

If you don't feel this is a good idea though, I can drop it. I was just curious about peoples personal gear.

I had an extremely unfair advantage though. I was working nights at a carpet mill making good money, and I started at a car audio shop part time. I used all the money I made at the stereo shop on my car stereo. I got everything at dealer cost and I was able to finance it at that price. Not all places will do that for you. I was extremely lucky.

I wish I could get that lucky. Diamond is some of my favorite stuff. That is one ill machine man! Do you have any measured Db numbers?

swez on 12/9/2006 09:04:23
That's a sweet rig Kit!!!

But as you say, you had an opportunity, saved your spare change and built it one piece at a time. To me... that's not braggin'. It's more like a good life lesson, most anyone can follow. When opportunity knocks... open the door and let it come in.

BTW, I don't even have a rig installed in my 92 Buick Hoopty Bucket right now. But, there's a few goodies stashed away in my toy chest for later though. Not big brands per-se... but when the right time comes, I'll deal with it and make some nice additions too. All in good time... just not now as other fish, (priorities) have to be fried first.

Thanks,
I have one number for you, busta, 153.7 That is unofficial, and that is also holding back a little. I would rather be above average and not destroy everything than get one more dB and have to replace it all.
I use this beast for SQ actually. I have 3 1st place trophies, and 2 or 3 second and third. I like to show it off, then not even compete in SPL. Plus since I have worked and still work part time in car audio, I am automatically in the expert division.

Hey Kit, quick question: How do you incorporate your 10" and the 12"s? Do you play them all at the same time, and just use the 10" for low midbass, and let the 12"s handle the low stuff?

Just curious, as I have done a system similar to this. I know some people install different size subs, and use one set for SQ, and another for SPL.

Great lookin system!

The 10 is sealed, and the 12's are ported. The 10 is in a small box (.7 cuft) I have a harrison labs sub sonic filter set at about 40 Hz, and I think the box f3 is around 60 Hz. I set the LPF on the sealed box to 72Hz, so the 10 is basically a midbass driver. It honestly is too much at times, but I also have a line attenuator (RCA gain controll) in the glove box. I hardly mess with it though, it takes forever to get it set where I like it. I did this to save the components. They are crossed over from the HU at 60-65Hz.
The 12" subs are in a ported box around 5 or 6 cu ft. tuned to 34Hz

I play everything all the time. I'm pretty happy just using the sub gain from the HU to controll the bass. The HU is the key though. I wouldn't be able to seal up the amps if I didn't have fully variable crossover controll in the HU.

My next purchase is going to be the Alpine PXA-H701
http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/products/product.php?model=PXA-H701&lang=en&tab=F
and the 1din controll unit RUX-C701
http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/products/product.php?model=RUX-C701&lang=en&tab=F

I have had my heart set on these for awhile. basically it is a DSP, DTC, and 1/3 octave EQ.

That's a wicked system, man, I love it. Impressed by your trophies too man. How did you get into competing?

cplkittle on 12/10/2006 00:11:59
I didn't compete for a long time, although I went to support the guys that competed that I install for. One day I just decided to jump in there with them, and it went from there. Word of advice.. Don't compete in SPL unless you are really confident with your setup. I saw alot of 130's 135's, these guys got laughed off the lineup. If you do compete, get there early and look around for awhile, if you think you might get beat, decide if it is worth $30-$40 to enter your vehicle just to see what numbers you can get.

Nice rig Kit!!! Hopefully if I'm lucky I will have something that sounds that sounds and looks that sweet some day. CLAP

ravin on 12/10/2006 18:05:21
oh my bad on the typo

ShootuhMcBustaCap on 12/10/2006 21:21:35
Out of curiousity, why did you reverse mount the subs?, I have seen this done many times, but never knew why.

Also what class of competition were you competing in? Also what organization orginizes the comps.?

cplkittle on 12/10/2006 22:54:10
The subs are inverted mostly for looks. One of the 12's had a pretty bad ding on the aluminum dust cap that I couldn't fix, so I just flipped them over. The other reason is that I am anal about a sealed box being sealed. I didn't want to drill a hole in the box or cut it out for a quick connect plate.

Three of the trophies are IASCA (the three 1st place SQ)
the others are local competitions around chattanooga for show and SPL.

ShootuhMcBustaCap on 12/11/2006 01:38:56
Good call on reversing them. I think they look sweet like that. D6's are sure some sexy subs, I've never heard them installed, but had the pleasure of blastin the crap out of them at ultimate electronics demo room. Probably the best subs I ever heard, those things really stomped. Would have loved to hear them in ported boxes as they were in sealed, probably would have knocked amps off the wall.
