i am hoping that someone can give me a simple, basic response to the question i have been asking for months..Which brand is better? I sold my old system and I am currently ready to buy an amp. and two 12" subs.. i would like the brand to match for both and are open to suggestions on the following brands.. Pioneer, kenwood, Rockford, and MTX audio. Looking for the loudest, strongest bass possible..hoping to make heads turn :P.. as for money wise.. i will spend no more than 200 for each sub and roughly 2-300 for the amp

I won't get into a debate of which brand you should use. All of the above brands have some good products. I will tell you this though.... Rarely have I seen brands that make a perfect matching amp and sub. That is why you will usually see people using different brands. It could be something as simple as the amp lacking a proper subsonic filter, power versus price differences, lesser woofer qualities, enclosure requirements, and stuff like that.

Running the same brand for amp and sub will not guarantee better performance, it just looks better sometimes.

Would you also consider other brands as both MTX and Rockford tend to be a bit on the pricey side. Consider these as well"

1. JBL (GTO series)
2. Infinity Kappa/Perfect subs and Reference Sweries amps
3. Alpine SWR series subs, MRD series amps

You'll get more bang for your buck with these brands and can stay with one vendor.

If you don't mind mix and match, Look at the newer Kenwood amp lines. They are slightly over-rated, but for the price, they are hard to beat.

If you are looking for personal opinions.. here ya go:

Pioneer amps and subs suck. Comparitively speaking the subs are just below average, and I have yet to see a pioneer amplifier with any balls. I love their HUs, although I think they are very deceptive with their Premier line. If you read the specs on any given Premier product, there is a standard pioneer line product that is identical except for the looks, and about 40% cheaper. Two years ago they had the SPL5000 sub that was pretty impressive, but nothing lately.

Kenwood has some nice performing subwoofers, and their amplifiers are not that bad, but still overrated. If you are looking for a good 800w system, this is definitely a good choice economically.

Rockford.. not much personal experience here, was a little dissapointed with the one and only T1 that I heard running off of a JL 1000/1. It just didn't impress me at all. I can't make a judgement call on that one though, alot of it may have been the box it was in.

MTX has made some pretty cool stuff lately, and their amplifiers have always done what they say they will do. I have been very impressed in their lower - mid line subs. They take a pretty good pounding without letting up or falling apart. I am not too familiar with the newer amplifiers though.

I hate to sound like a spokesperson, but one company that has really caught my attention lately is Powerbass. They are new (2-3 years) to the industry and are making some really solid products. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the top5 SPL drags in the near future.

thnx all this info is very helpfull.. i am going to the store probably tomorrow or the day after..i am leaning more towards mtx, because i heard that their amps do not over heat as easily as rockfords.. i have also heard that their new brand of subs will pound the sh*t out of any vehicle u throw at it..hopefully everything works out and i'll keep you guys posted...p.s. if there is anyone who feels i am making a bad choice feel free to reply before friday..thnx guys

by the way...here is the name of the sub and amp i am thinking of going with.. i am new to this kinda stuff so if someone could tell me if this would go good together it would be really helpfull

Amplifier:

MTX 1-Channel Car Amplifier (TC3001)
Total Max Power- 900 watts
Signal to noise ratio- 75db

Subwoofer:

MTX 12" Car Subwoofer (MZS1204)
Power Handling Nominal: 150-300watts
Power Handling Max- 600watts
Surround material- rubber
4 ohms

I dont know if one sub would be good enough.. i am thinking of adding another sub but dont know of the amp would be able to handle it.. i know that the amp is only a 1 channel but i heard that u can connect the 2 and still have the same amount of power going to each sub.. i dont know if this makes any sense to you guys lol.. but if you know what i am talking about, please get back to me on it.. thnx

me againnnn.. if a 2 channel amp would be better there is the MTX Car Amplifier (TC2002)..same amount of watts and surprisingly cheaper price..this is my last post :P srry

Honestly, the mono amp would pprobably be your best bet, unless the 2 channel has more power.
Yes, multiple subs can be connected to the same amplifier.
For example if your mono amplifier is 2 ohm stable, and delivers 900watts at 2 ohms, your output at 4 ohms is going to be 450watts. If you connect two 4 ohm subs (single 4 ohm voice coil) in parallel you get 2 ohms, which equals 900watts. Divide 900 by 2 (2 subs) and you get 450 watts each.

On a 2 channel amplifier, each channel will be 2 ohm stable. If you bridge it, you can only go down to 4 ohms.

cplkittle..is there a way to get 900 watts going to each sub? or do i have to divide the watts in half each time (450 each).. someone said there is a way to sort of cheat it and get the 900 to each..srry i dont rlly understand all the terms n stuff.. u might of alrdy ansered my question

Bass_bass_10 on 12/11/2006 23:24:14
and if it is only 450 each..which it probably is, do you think it will still pound the subs? i just want this system to be a good one..rattle my car a bit you know
